I was never someone who could spend 14+ hours a day scrapping and slaving away, memorizing textbooks to get into premier Indian institutes like IIT or BITS. I wanted the freedom to learn what I was interested in, to put my mind to work on things I believed myself most suited for, and at the same time have a balanced life with time for friends, travel, and solid relationships.The United States has given me that and so much more. My tuition is paid for, I’m given a stipend to teach undergraduates Anatomy and Physiology, I’m allowed time off to travel to any part of the country that interests me. I’m allowed to play with cutting-edge technology, equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, in the hope that something I do leads to a cure for breast cancer.The people are wonderful. They’ve challenged and changed my perspectives. I came here expecting to be profiled, marginalized, and occasionally face racism. It hasn’t happened to me once in four years of living here — and even if it does right after I finish typing this answer, it cannot take away from how welcoming, kind, and helpful the people of Indiana — and the US at large — have been to me.My brother came here five years before me and received his Masters from a premier private engineering college. At the time, we were in a desperate financial situation but he received a full scholarship and support from his university; and upon graduating, landed a job with a renowned engine company. He spoke in English and said he now lives in Miami. He was just visiting his home in Barcelona. I asked why he moved out to Miami and left behind beautiful Barcelona. “Because I needed to be around American drive and focus. I like the way you think and act on it.”It made me realize what makes me American, what I love about my country, and why the world still keeps its eyes on us despite how much others talk about how much they dislike us from their iPhone 8′s….

I had my teen years in Portugal and adulthood in San Jose/San Francisco, I’ve currently been 3 years in Bangkok, Thailand, working for myself, from home. The reason I ‘left’ the US was because everyone around me was so driven and focused (to use your words) on building the next Facebook or Twitter or whatnot, and I didn’t feel they enjoyed the simpler things in life. Thais, contrasted to other South/East Asian countries (and maybe southern europeans are similar), do not have this drive, and I kinda enjoy it, for the most part they’re content where they are, and do not have this ‘greed’ (in the good sense of the word). OTOH, of course there’s times when you can get frustrated with this as well, so it’s a give and take. I left the US because it was too much of it, but I appreciate it still for instilling in me those same values that allowed me to build a business that allowed me to travel the world.

With all the anti American talks around the world and the negativity being spread by the media, I thought ill of the country too.
After visiting it for the first time I see where the money earned is being spent. I have travelled around Asia and Europe and I haven't met people with such a chill mind anywhere else so far. I love how people talk here and operate in life.
I thought about the following before and after visiting the United States.
1-
Before : America stole oil from the Middle East.
Now : Saudies couldn't drill oil without American help nor anyone else looks like they can work on it. Americans are just a collective force of smart people from all around the world who make such resources accessible to the world.
2-
Before : America had their Cold War with soviets.
Now : America is not an expantionist country, it did not change the culture of South Korea and Other capitalist states US helped (nor did they took over it) unlike soviet who didn't allow central Asian countries to read the Quran.
3-
Before : Dollar is dominating the world.
Now : Please let me and also Americans know if you have a better idea ? The goal is not to make dollar influential but trade among each other without problems.
4-
Before : Americans are stupid and don't know anything about the world.
Now : They're too smart to portray their dumb image because they're smart. See what they did there ? Why would Silicon Valley exist in America if they were dumb. All the smart people from around the world go there to work.
5 :
Before : Americans are responsible for the fighting in the world and sell arms and weapons to everyone.
Now : America is one country but not one tribe who believe in one thing. It's the most diverse place on earth with the most diverse set of ideas from everyone. Everyone is still a human being. It cannot be so easy to control each and every thing.

Now : Who ever is ruling, worked for it. Maybe his father or great grand father. People worked for it and got there. It's a capitalistic world and you should do the same. It's a race and winners deserve what they have.

Before : I don't think Afghanistan has anyone like Elon Musk who would make a better use out of it. In the end of the day. Technology will be used for everyone.

I am yet to discover and learn more. I'm trying to have an optimistic point of view for both America and the rest of the world. I still have a lot to learn and I don't think that I know everything.

Now : I haven't met better people yet than Americans. I have been all around Europe and many countries in Asia and people don't seem to be as helpful as Americans are. Also talkative. People in other places don't talk much.
I am yet to discover and learn more. I'm trying to have an optimistic point of view for both America and the rest of the world. I still have a lot to learn and I don't think that I know everything.

Every time I have gotten a new car or new long term rental from local vendors in foreign countries there has been little to no gas in the car.Compare that to an American or American based vendor/company who will make sure the care is fully gassed up and the car is washed and detailed before giving it to you.We care about the little details almost as much as the main purchase.
