If you’re into cheap sex and lady boys. Phuket island is great but it doesn''t offer much high quality services to international tourists. Essentially the country is only good for sex tourism.
Food poisoning - The country has poor sanitation, diseases are all around waiting for you to be infected. Homeless dogs, cats, rats, lizards, creatures are all around in the restaurant climbing up the wall.
Prices are doubled if you’re visiting from a western country.
Types of tourists I have met, old wealthy western men looking to get laid with the locals, Arabic/Middle Eastern families on vacation enjoying social freedom in Thailand. Chinese/Indian tourist see Thailand as a cheap affordable nearby destination. I personally went for surfing and outdoor water sports, however services were poor and unprofessional.
Bangkok is polluted not only the air but also the rivers and the sea. It was better than Phuket island but even in Bangkok you will get ripped off. Types of westerners I met are overly embarrassing both in behavior and attitude.
Do I want to visit Thailand again? Absolutely not! I’m considering to avoid south east Asia altogether apart from Singapore and Malaysia. Other countries should learn more from China and how the country handling with its pollution and managing sanitation nationally.

Well, I''ve only been to Thailand once, but I''m very impressed with it. Maybe it does have some problems, but I think the people there are very good and have the characteristics of Southeast asia. If I had the chance, I would go there again.

I myself had a terrible experience in Thailand. Our flight was delayed, and by the time we arrived late in the evening, the only thing we wanted to do was to get to our hotel.
The tuk tuk driver charged us 10 times the the usual price we found out later, we haggled him down to 6 and thought we got a good deal. The whole country is set up to scam tourists.
We spent most of our time there trying not to get scammed.
Never again.

I am actually sad Thailand has changed this much. At least this is not how I experienced it in 2004. Then the food was absolutely amazing, we could have an entire Island by ourselves and it was so cheap you could eat a 3 course dinner for 2 dollars. People were also superfriendly.

I have a feeling you’ve only seen the worst of Thailand. I’ve been there only once and my experience was quite the opposite from yours. I went from Koh Phangan (Sanctuary area) to the old temples way up north, and I’ve seen a lot of beauty and met very genuinely friendly people. Of course I’ve seen some mess and some very suspicious people (horrible stuff like you’ve said, old fucks looking for underage sex) but mainly in bigger cities. I haven’t seen the places you’ve listed tho, that might be the reason.

I have visited Thailand for various purposes and I find Thais are very polite. I come from Java, so I know how to be polite, but Thais are one step ahead to the Javanese. When you combine tourism with poor locals, you can also expect swindlers. You cant outsmart everyone, so dont let it bother you too much. It''s still much cheaper than a European trip.
You get poor food quality if you eat at places that make their money from tourists. They can make a tourist sick without consequences, because within a few days, their whole clientele refreshes. You should therefore eat at places where the locals eat. I never got ill during my trip.

I can agree to all the points, but may I just make it clear why so many of the beaches in thailand are “polluted” is well, because of a lot of foreigners, more specifically those from the western world, visiting and leaving their thrash around. Maybe if people don''t throw rubbish it wouldn''t be dirty in the first place.

I live up North and it’s very different from the South. Thais are very friendly up North, they don’t push you to buy, and I have never been ripped off, to the contrary. It’s one of the safest places to live and it’s very cultural. The sex culture exists, but it’s much milder and mostly allocated to one street. I do have to say that part is not so enchanting. Organic foods and health products are cheap and the infrastructure good. I do wish they would stop cutting down trees and making the city less appealing but the rest I can say living here the people are lovely, friendly people and I’m always amazed in contrast to the last country I lived. WHat you described, it’s not nearly as severe.

Sorry you have such a negative opinion. I lived in Thailand 25 years and love the place. Most Thai people are genuinely friendly, but less so in tourist ghettos.
By the way, I have experienced the same unpleasant things that you did in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Bad things can happen in any country.

If you think Thailand is dirty, don’t even think about going to India! I don’t know when you went to Thailand and which particular beach you’ve been to but I’ve been to Patong, Koh Tao, Koh Phi Phi and I found the beaches quite clean. No locals peeing or defecating unlike India. Never got overly ripped off except by taxi drivers, but that is a worldwide problem, hence Uber and Grab. Northern Thailand is my preferred area in Thailand. Sex tourism is not prent, lots of young backpackers and low key retirees. Chiang Mai is quite progressive. They have begun awareness about reducing the use of plastic bags. The moat around Chiang Mai is very clean. Actually, even the canals in Bangkok are quite clean. Street food is very cheap and in the 6 years I’ve been coming here on and off, I’ve never been poisoned. Besides my recommendation of never going to India, I could also mention Myanmar where tourists always pay more than locals for anything including city buses, and movies. For some activities such as museum, the price difference can be as much as 10X. When it comes to price gouging and harassment for tourists, Nepal is also pretty much high on the list. So, overall, Thailand is better than a lot of the surrounding countries or any other high tourist countries for that matter.

I will not say that what you said is entirely wrong, but you look everything with the wrong side and you can do this with many other countries and they will look like shit too.
It’s not fake friendliness, some on tourist zone can be. But for live and work here with many thai around me I can tell you that they are really friendly and smile all day. Sabai sabai style is not a lie. But you need to go a few meters away from the tourists zone not always easy for some…
Patong beach. It never has been famous for his beautiful beach there is hundreds of beautiful one… too bad you chose the one near the red light district and one of the worst of thailand… Very touristic zone also crowded and polluded. So yeah I agree but you should had chose to go somewhere else.
For the sex tourism in phuket I strongly disagree with you.. Yeah if you stay in the red light district that is patong and bangla road you will see all the lady bar etc… But phuket is BIG with a lot of other places very friendly for tourists with beautiful hotel and resort and awesome beach. So the red light distric is really tiny compare to all other place in phuket.
Food poisoning: I live here for 3 years, only 1 food poisoning. And I often eat on little shop outside.. If you use commun sense it’s really hard to get sick here… And saying that diseases are all around waiting for you??? really?? I dont even know how to answer to this, I dont see much of a difference with another country…
Other type of tourist: “old wealthy western men looking to get laid with the locals” This is so cliché and it seems you really stay too much near some red light district here… it’s sad, there is so much to see here.
Is polluted: yes but not all the beach and the river like you said . And for me bangkok is way more polluted than phuket… like all the megalopole with their good and bad side.

There are reasons why I find South Korea overrated:
Korean food is kind of overrated, I don''t mean to offend any Koreans or anyone who likes Korean food out there. The reason why I find Korean food overrated is because I just cannot get the appeal, Korean food to me is too spicy and rather bland. However, there are Korean dishes that I like such as instant noodle, Korean snacks, and Korean style barbecued ribs (Galbi).
Kpop is way too overrated. Again, I don''t mean to offend anyone who likes Kpop. The reason why I find Kpop overrated is because not many of Kpop sobgs appeal me, although I like few of Kpop songs.
Korean fashion is overrated, I don’t like the design at all. For Asian fashion, I much prefer Japanese.
On the flip side of the coin, even though I find South Korea to be overrated, there are things that I like about South Korea such as:
Cheap but good quality cosmetics: Although I don''t use much Korean cosmetic products, I have to admit that Korean cosmetics are really good quality and affordable. I can see why a lot people like Korean cosmetics.
Good quality electronic products: Although the quality lags a bit compared to Japanese or American electronics, I have to admit that Korean electronic products are pretty good lately, at least compared to years ago. Samsung and LG are a pretty good brands.
Good quality cars: Korean cars are getting better lately, especially compared to years ago. Even though the quality still lags a bit compared to Japanese cars, but I still can tell that Korean cars are pretty good, not just reliable but also pretty affordable. Hyundai and KIA are pretty good brands.
As well, even though I am not really keen on Korean drama, I find Dae Jang Geum to be a pretty good drama series.

I’d say the United States. I was born and raised here, and while we do have a lot of interesting and fun stuff… we’re a huge country. People underestimate how big we are. I was born and raised in Minnesota, and it takes me a ridiculously long time to get to some of the biggest cities that foreigners like to go too.
Even Mount Rushmore takes a while to get to, and I freaking live in a state that borders South Dakota, where it''s in.
Realistically, you better have a long trip if you want to have a road trip in the US. The long stretches of highways aren''t the most interesting either. We’re also a lot less beautiful than we show in the pictures. Yeah, the US is undeniably a beautiful country, but we do have our fair share of ugly stuff here. Like we have construction whenever there isn''t too much snow on the ground.
Here in Minnesota we have a joke, “We have only 2 seasons, Winter and Road Construction.” Because there''s road construction pretty much everywhere whenever it isn''t winter. As far as I know, there''s construction no matter where you go in the US, especially if you’re near a larger city. I live in a suburb of Minneapolis and I go to school in Eagan, MN… I have to drive through Minneapolis every day to get to school. Minneapolis is our biggest and most well-known city, and it has road construction like no tomorrow.
Do I still think people should visit the United States? Of course, but I don''t get why we get SO many tourists. Like another answer said, a lot of places are pretty forgettable here. You also will have to stay in one area in your trip, unless you have a lot of money to spare to go on an airplane or more during your stay here, because our airline tickets are also pretty expensive.
And at least here in Minnesota, if you go to more rural places, it doesnt have the visual appeal of the big cities. In northern Minnesota, it looks like a lot of buildings need to be fixed up and so. many. potholes.
We also have quite a few homeless people, and a lot of rich people. Because capitalism. I''m not against capitalism all the way, but I think we take it a bit too far in the US.
We also have a ton of taboo subjects that would be acceptable in other countries. Don''t talk about sexual orientation, religion, political views, your salary, don''t comment on other people''s weight… there''s so much that you can''t talk about.
We’re also a pretty religious nation. Somewhere around 70% of people are Christian/Catholic here. I personally don''t really like that. We also have crazy priests and pastors… who belong in Medi Europe in my opinion. Yeah, their views are that extreme.
For example, we have a pastor in Arizona that says all homosexuals should be killed, that women shouldn''t have ANY rights other than staying home and taking care of the kids. I wish I was kidding.
So again, come here to the US if you want, but it isn''t as great as many people think it is.

I’d say the United States. I was born and raised here, and while we do have a lot of interesting and fun stuff… we’re a huge country. People underestimate how big we are. I was born and raised in Minnesota, and it takes me a ridiculously long time to get to some of the biggest cities that foreigners like to go too.
Even Mount Rushmore takes a while to get to, and I freaking live in a state that borders South Dakota, where it''s in.
Realistically, you better have a long trip if you want to have a road trip in the US. The long stretches of highways aren''t the most interesting either. We’re also a lot less beautiful than we show in the pictures. Yeah, the US is undeniably a beautiful country, but we do have our fair share of ugly stuff here. Like we have construction whenever there isn''t too much snow on the ground.
Here in Minnesota we have a joke, “We have only 2 seasons, Winter and Road Construction.” Because there''s road construction pretty much everywhere whenever it isn''t winter. As far as I know, there''s construction no matter where you go in the US, especially if you’re near a larger city. I live in a suburb of Minneapolis and I go to school in Eagan, MN… I have to drive through Minneapolis every day to get to school. Minneapolis is our biggest and most well-known city, and it has road construction like no tomorrow.
Do I still think people should visit the United States? Of course, but I don''t get why we get SO many tourists. Like another answer said, a lot of places are pretty forgettable here. You also will have to stay in one area in your trip, unless you have a lot of money to spare to go on an airplane or more during your stay here, because our airline tickets are also pretty expensive.
And at least here in Minnesota, if you go to more rural places, it doesnt have the visual appeal of the big cities. In northern Minnesota, it looks like a lot of buildings need to be fixed up and so. many. potholes.
We also have quite a few homeless people, and a lot of rich people. Because capitalism. I''m not against capitalism all the way, but I think we take it a bit too far in the US.
We also have a ton of taboo subjects that would be acceptable in other countries. Don''t talk about sexual orientation, religion, political views, your salary, don''t comment on other people''s weight… there''s so much that you can''t talk about.
We’re also a pretty religious nation. Somewhere around 70% of people are Christian/Catholic here. I personally don''t really like that. We also have crazy priests and pastors… who belong in Medi Europe in my opinion. Yeah, their views are that extreme.
For example, we have a pastor in Arizona that says all homosexuals should be killed, that women shouldn''t have ANY rights other than staying home and taking care of the kids. I wish I was kidding.
So again, come here to the US if you want, but it isn''t as great as many people think it is.

(1) We don’t even have a proper name (United States is how our geographic parts are assembled and other nations use that term, “America” refers to two continents, but the USA has basically taken “United States” and “America” to refer to themselves)
(2) We worship a bunch of long-dead guys as “founding fathers” and are obsessed with “what did they intend?” despite the fact they lived in what is an alien world to us.
(3) We crow on and on about how “the United States is the greatest country in the world!!” and “American exceptionalism!” without any actual evidence to back it up.
Things we are highest in are—
Gun violence among developed nations
prison population in the entire world—the “land of the free” locks up more people and a higher percentage of her population than any other nation on earth.
Our military is very impressive, it better be we spend enough on it while neglecting things like education, healthcare and our infrastructure.
Consumerism
Spending the most on healthcare for poor returns
(4) We claim to be a champion of freedom and human rights but will support any awful regime as longs as it sucks up to us. We seem to enjoy “killing hope” for other peoples.
(5) We have a long history of oppressing others to “get to the top.”
(6) A streak of crazy where people like to feel “as long as I get mine screw the rest of you!!!”
Now don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of great things about the US and living here but we are far from being that “shinning city on a hill” no matter how much we lie to ourselves about it.

The people of the United States are friendly and respectful. They will respect your religion, race, and nationality. They laugh easily - even at themselves. They are playful and, when the opportunity calls for it, wicked smart. They are curious, but in a civil way. They are irreverent - they treat you like an equal - not as someone who is better or worse.
No country has the portfolio of cities like the United States: New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, New Orleans, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle. Each city a jewel in its own right.
Just check out the cuisine in each region - from the eclectic foods of San Francisco and New Orleans to the absurdly delicious lobster of the Northeast and the Norwegian and German inspired dishes of the Midwest. Whatever dish you hunger for from any country has been made here.
