I think one of the reasons US police shoot people so often (besides lack of training on how to disarm people without lethal force) is that US police are nervous as hell because there are so many guns in the US. They''''re so worried that a gun will appear out of nowhere and kill them, that they shoot when they feel the slightest bit threatened. A kid puts his hand in his pocket? Shoot! Someone makes an unexpected move? Doesn''''t follow an order immediately? They shoot first and then explain later why they felt their life was in danger. But it varies a LOT from police dept to dept and I think the departments with great records should be called to go in and train all the officers in the departments with shitty records.

Unacceptable risky move here. I spent 30 years in law enforcement and can tell you that confronting a knife-wielding suspect unarmed should be a complete absolute last resort. There are too many factors that cannot be taken into account and can go very wrong for the officer NO MATTER HOW MUCH TRAINING YOU THINK YOU MAY HAVE. To say this is professionalism is totally ludicrous. It also sets a bad example for younger impressionable officers. These two officers were standing much to close to the suspect leaving themselves open and vulnerable for attack had he decided to do so. Also, if they weren''''t in such close proximity to the suspect, he would not have been an immediate threat to anyone and this situation could have been handled much more safely say by use of a taser.

Police would not shoot him unless he was an immediate threat to them or to another person. These officers were too close making him a threat to them. Had this gone wrong it would have been on the SWAT team. They got lucky this time.
