Hima Bindu, Dentist. Entrepreneur.
I almost Died
On a beautiful sunny evening, (not knowing I was about to be scammed), while I was walking around the Tiananmen square, a Chinese lady approached me. All day long, I had been struggling to find my way around because no one understands English in Beijing (I didn’t come across anyone who spoke English), Anyhow, as I was walking, this lady came out of nowhere.
And She was like “Hi”. I thought OMG an English speaking Chinese Angel!! (little did I know she was English speaking Angel of hell/death) and I thought, finally!!! YAY! I nearly jumped for Joy, nearly cried (happy tears).
And the lady probably in her head must be thinking: “Muahaha, What an idiot, found my sheep to slaughter! I am going to scam you, then you can cry harder, for real”.
But, she didn’t show any of that EVILNESS on her face, (She should be awarded an Oscar!),
Let’s continue the story: So, with a friendly/poker face this Oscar worthy lady asked me where I was from. And, me being naive and super excited to find someone speaking English, I told her, I am visiting from Australia. And She said, wow! My brother lives in Australia. (red flag). At the point I felt like, Omg!! We are totally family!!
So, she was walking right next to me and continued the conversation, I am planning to visit my brother in Australia, and I am learning English, your English is good! Maybe you can speak with me in English over coffees/ teas, you can experience Chinese traditional tea ceremony.”
I got all excited! Oh yes, today evening is working out so good. I am in Beijing and how can I not experience traditional tea ceremony and taste some local teas and it can’t get any better, sitting with a local and she can teach me Chinese and a bit more about about Chinese culture and I can teach her English.

And Guess what? like magic- there was a tea house right across the street, she pointed and said, let’s go into that tea house and sit and chat. I followed her like a sheep ( Baa baaa baa).
I was very excited, and We entered this tea house and there was this creepy looking old lady, (initially I thought, awww she is adorable, she is old and she is still working, wow!) and these two ladies bowed to each other and I looked at them and I bowed too thinking if I don’t they might do some Chinese magic on me and turn me into dragon or something. (I mean, I am in their territory, I don’t know their traditions).
And then, I and the lady sat down and then the nightmare/ hell began. The most scary thing happened.
This adorable/creepy looking lady looked into my eyes and smiled and I smiled back and she waddled all the way to the front of the shop and closed this big door! Bam! That’s it!! My heart sank into my uterus. Literally. What? Why? Why did she close the door? Isn’t this a tea place open to public? I needed to pee and silently sob in the bathroom, and jump out of the window and run, but there is none. I am stuck. No escape. I can not even let my emotions show, I was sweating, smile on my face is just a nervous smile.
And I started praying, what is going to happen now? Are they going to beat me up and take all my money? Will they force me to drink the teas and then when I pass out, they will kill me, hide my body in the basement? I was totally panicking, and I didn’t attempt to run or resist or say anything mean to them, because what if they torture me even more.

So, I stayed calm and she brought me the menu (everything looked so expensive- this is a foreigner menu), but I found the cheapest tea and said, I will have this — hoping she wouldn’t poison me.
I didn’t even say goodbye to my family or had my favourite last meal, how can my life end here in this tea house, in the hands of this old lady?
And the other liar lady, she ordered the most expensive tea on the menu. And she was telling all about her family and Chinese history, I couldn’t focus, all I could hear is my heartbeat and My brain scanning for any ideas to escape this scary place. (Thank God she didn’t ask me questions about the history she just told me, I would have been busted).
I was scanning, if there is a sword or something that I could slice these two ladies and run like a ninja warrior.

She kept forcing me to drink the tea, I looked at her and I was like, okay, “I can’t drink all of this, can you please have some of my tea?” And I offered her some from my pot, just to check if she drinks and not froth up from her mouth, then at least I would know the tea isn’t poisoned.
I said cheers! This how we say it in English.(*nervous laugh*Cheers? Really? You are going to die Hima).
My whole life flashed in front of me, What I have done wrong? I mean, probably little things here and there, but I definitely don’t deserve to die like this. Anyway I didn’t want to argue with God- I asked God, for forgiveness (OKAY, don’t judge me, I had no other option! I am just trying to survive here).
I looked at this liar lady and she took her first sip, I thought, okay she didn’t die, and so I took a deep breath and took a sip, still thinking there must be some thing in the walls of my cup that could kill me.
And this liar lady wouldn’t shut up and she is asking me all these questions and all I am thinking is, “Hima, please, don’t pass out, if you did you won’t even have a chance to hit her on the head and you would die with out trying”.
Oh God, this isn’t even coffee atleast if I die drinking coffee people at my funeral would say “she died doing what she liked the best”.
I was also silent farting (NERVOUS FARTS), I didn’t want to, but that wasn’t in my control, every time I did one of those , I was like: “OH COME ON HIMA, get a grip on that anal sphincter, you might make them angry from all the smell and they torture you even more and kill you slowly”.
She kept on pouring the tea while, I am still trying to find an escape, “what if I threw this hot cup of tea at the strong, young LIAR lady here and then I can run for the door before the old lady waddles slowly behind me, I can out run her and escape!!!”. Good plan I thought.

But, then I found a flaw, what if she takes a knife or a poisonous dart and throws at me from behind as I run and I die? So I aborted that plan.
I already apologised to God, so, I looked up—telepathically sent a message to Him: “Anytime now, would be good, to rescue me, please!”.
So, finally the tea pot is empty and I gathered all my courage to say: “I need to go— please, I have to feed my ferrets!“.
(Ferrets? Really?) That’s the excuse I came up with expecting they are going to believe me and now I definitely made it worse.
So I looked at the old lady, smiled at her (she looked sooo creepy, like one of those wicked witches who makes poisonous potions), thank God I didn’t tell her that.
When I am nervous I loose all control, like I lost the control on my anal sphincter, I asked her: “check, please!”. She didn’t understand! Of course.

I turned to the liar lady, and although I wanted to murder her so badly for scamming me, I explained to her— check/bill please. And she gave me a $400 bill. I couldn’t believe my eyes. What the heck? I wanted to screammmmm!!
But I had to calm myself, because I don’t want to die yet, so— I looked at the bill again— and I wanted to point out — why the heck am I paying for the liar lady’s most expensive tea, but I didn’t, and I took the money out and paid, and said nice tea- but expensive! And I didn’t know why I said that— I instantly regretted it, just in case if the old lady throws that poisonous dart at me from behind and kills me and takes away the rest of my money and feed me to her pet dragon.
And the liar lady lied more— she said, the tea is the cheapest you can get in china, because she gave a discount because of her, and that it’s the best tea ever and it has gold in it, and there are many healing nutrients in it.
(With my mouth open, in my head: Okay, liar lady!! I believe you).
I said, oh okay. Wow it had gold in it, Thank you, thank you for this..... out of the world experience— can we go out now! Pleaseee... I need to feed my ferrets and I miss my home.
I swear if I didn’t pay, probably they would have killed me.
And that’s how I got out of that hellish hole. I am never going to believe anyone on the streets of Beijing ever again

I tried to purchase a simple non-smartphone with a sim card from a Big 3 phone company (China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile) on Wangfujing Street in Beijing. The saleslady quoted me an absurd price of a couple hundred U.S. dollars. I immediately knew she was trying to rip me off.
Thankfully, I went back to my neighborhood in Caishikou and found the same phone for only U.S.$15 and it included the SIM card.
In Beijing, also watch out for people selling mass produced art for ridiculous prices and claiming that it’s painted by them in limited editions.

Hima Bindu
That’s crazy. The price difference. I ended up paying 100$ for some cheap sunglasses :( They are fake pradas. Broke the very next day. I believed them. In my defence this was before I got into this tea house scam.
Thank you for sharing.

Hima dear… come visit Hanoi, Vietnam.. There are plenty cheap fake North Face backpack, winter clothes, wet jacket, super cheap fake nike and adidas shoes… you won’t get conned as they won’t sell you the normal original price.. But once you buy it you won’t complained as the items are quire quality.. I myself have bought more than 4 north face bag, and jacket. And they don’t speak good english but you can find foreign visitor almost every corner in Hanoi city.

Hima Bindu
Oh,I love Vietnam. Thank you. I will plan a trip soon.

Vietnam is a good place. Many malaysian go there for visit every year.

My first time in China about 12 years ago I was in Beijing and got the exact same scam. For the next month, everywhere we went in the country, our university tour guide, Pong, would announce loudly “Now, be careful Tom. They serve tea here.”
It didn’t get old. When his professor took over guiding us in Xian or Suzhou (I forget which) Pong made sure to ‘warn him’ about me but he didn’t get the joke and thought Pong was serious and that I had some sort of tea fetish. We laughed a lot. Great guy.
But yeah, most expensive tea I’ve ever drunk in my life.

Hima Bindu
Ha Ha. I don’t understand why the police/officials don’t do anything about it.

Prashant
Could be because the police are hand in glove with them as well… if you call them the price could get higher but $400 … you are really generous

I have spent about 800 days in China and have never been invited to a tea house. Maybe those are e big city places and I spend most of my time out in smaller cities on only 1 million people.
I have gone into tea stores and offered free hot tea but never charged. Good Tea is treasured in China and is much more expensive than in the USA but it’s not Lipton Instant Tea either :-)

This is a scam that happens so often, that even the website of our Foreign Ministry warns about it - not to talk about pages like wikitravel and others. Thank you, however, for telling your story with all details. I knew how it would end, but it was interesting to observe how a victim feels in this situation. As a tourist I also have some experience - with unsafety during Rio carnival.

Hima Bindu
I realised only later, that this is a common scam, and warnings all over the internet. I felt stupid that I didn’t read before. What scared me was when she closed the big heavy front door. Why do they close the door though?

I was born in Beijing, and I know these things happened a lot. But I do believe if you call the police(110) right after it happenes, somebody will take care of you, maybe retrieve your money. Reason of that is, china want to maintain a nice image to global friends. So do not hesitate to call the police.

Women coming up and saying they are English students visiting Beijing and asking if they can practice with you and maybe have a drink. The women attempt to make you drunk through manipulating the glasses, then heavies arrive and you’re forced pay up hundreds of dollars/euros per glass. There’s now just one shop running that scam, and it’s just near the east exit of the Forbidden City. Note: People coming up to you for photos or chat will be okay. The warning sign is if they ask when you’re leaving Beijing and trying to obtain hints about your local connections.
Taxis are okay, but check their licence plate starts with B. Otherwise, it’s a black cab and it will rip you off. Catch the train or bus from Capital Airport or wait in the official taxi queue.
Watch out for cheap spiked cocktails. Cocktails above 50 rmb should be okay. Local bottled beer is also okay at 10 - 40 rmb .
Go to the Great Wall via a regular public bus. Don’t get off the bus when someone comes aboard and claims there’s a problem ahead. That’s the scam, because they’ll charge heavily for a mini-bus.

Check that 100 and 50 rmb notes are real by looking at the shiny number at different angles. This part is holographic and will change colour. All locals check notes are real, so it’s not rude to always check. Some taxis may want to dump a fake 50 rmb on tourists, so best to carry some 20’s.
upxe: The real trap in scam 1 is thinking there’s nothing that can be done, so the tourist just forks out what the scam bar demands. In fact, you can just get your money back by reporting them to the police. Our Chinese company director went to the police station to ask why they weren''t cleaning it up and the police explained that almost nobody reports it. If you do, the police will go with you and get all your money back. But since nobody follows through, the police treat it as not serious.

So I fell for the ‘English speaking’ scam in 2008 - the group of boys and girls ordered drinks for themselves but presented the bill to me. When I refused to pay because:
I don’t drink alcohol
I was fasting for Ramadan and didn’t drink anything, not even a glass of water…
the big guys came out and demanded I pay up. I told them to go f*** themselves and do whatever they wanted. And then I walked out.
Voila.
