While visiting Shanghai for the first time, I was just wandering the streets looking for some breakfast when I came across a street vendor selling jianbing.

Jianbing (simplified Chinese: 煎饼; traditional Chinese: 煎餅; pinyin: jiānbǐng; literally: ''''fried pancake'''') is a traditional Chinese street food similar to crepes. It is a type of bing generally eaten for breakfast and hailed as "one of China''''s most popular street breakfasts."

The old woman handed my breakfast to me, but I didn’t know how much to pay her

She didn’t speak a word of English and I didn’t speak a word of Chinese. She may have had her prices posted on a menu, but if she did, it was all in Chinese. So, I stuck out my hand with whatever cash I had in my pocket, signaling her to take whatever my breakfast cost.

It was a very nice breakfast by the way, tasty and filling.I later found out my delicious breakfast costed me about thirty five cents (USD).Ridiculous. Ridiculously low!

Never had one but seen videos all over YouTube. They look absolutely delicious

Yes, quite good. I think about them sometimes, but I can’t find anywhere to buy them in Los Angeles.

Venice 2011. For those of you who have travelled with little kids, you know you have to plan lots of eating time into your vacation schedule. We had gotten off our cruise ship and walked around for about ten minutes when our 4 and 6 year old kids started groaning about wanting a snack. Fortunately, we were right in St. Mark’s Piazza, and despite the square being very busy, there were a bunch of cafe tables wide open in front of a little gelato shop with sandwiches. Fantastic!

This was technically my first meal in Italy, and though there were many more amazingly delicious things coming my way over the next few days, this one was awful even by my low American standards. We had a hot dog which was served on a sad, stale piece of bread, 2 small panini, which were also meager and bland, and a couple espressos & waters. We were going to order some gelato to hopefully finish on a better note. The waiter, who I think at that point was taking pity on us, kindly told us that we should walk up to the counter and get it ourselves, because there was a €25 charge for him to bring it to the table.

Great! We thought we had dodged a bullet until the bill came. Even without gelato table service, our meal of a hot dog, 2 gross sandwiches, 2 espressos and 2 glasses of water came to €80! At that time I think it was something like $125. INSANE!!! Should’ve known so many available tables in such a perfect place was too good to be true.

The price of beef in Japan. Sitting down for shabu-shabu would run you $75 apiece, and this was in the 80s. Sushi ain’t cheap there either, and one might have thought…London is absurdly expensive — just popping into a pub for a pint and a little tiny steak & kidney pie will run the better part of $35–40, for one person. The Scandinavian countries are very pricey, but nothing jumps out at me, and I approve at some level, because they pay their restaurant staff, like, $25 per hour, a very generous amount.Paris is crazy. A little glass of wine and a croque monsieur (grilled cheese sandwich) for each of us would run an $80 lunch — so we started ordering out at little bakeries for lunch.

For me, it was when I took my mom on a trip to Hong Kong and China. China went well - I can speak enough street-level Mandarin to get around, and we had friends with us in most places - but we were “surprised” in Hong Kong.

There is a particular street in Hong Kong where you can buy fish. The fish is sold in street market fashion. We bought some fish, paid for it, and they said we could have the fish prepared and could eat it upstairs, in a rather run-down dining area above the market. We figured they’d charge a small extra charge to prepare the fish as we’d already bought it, so we went ahead and did it…

Minor detail: the preparation price is not a “small extra charge”. We ended up spending about US$300 on the meal for three people - and that was after we’d paid about $100 for the fish. Our HK friend - who had never been there - was as surprised as we were that the preparation cost as much as it did.I’d been wondering how I was going to break the HK$1000 bill I got when we got local currency from an ATM. This place nicely solved that problem…
