America.
Before you all start shouting at me saying how great America is, let me speak.
So I am born and breeed in England but I have a Mediterranean skin tone. So most people mistake me of being Spanish or Greek.
I went to visit America for a month travelling to different towns and cities across the country.
The cities were nice and all but didn’t really have much to do other than go the beach or a few amusement parks etc… most were bland and had little culture.
It was a good trip but somethings just made it bad and a place I don’t want to visit again, so I’ll list the reasons;

1. the people. Some people were very nice and kind but at the same time a lot of people gave me dirty looks and some even told me to go out of their country because I’m an imamgrant! I kept noticing people thought of me different because I looked slighty different. And another thing is that people just seem genuinely rude sometimes and disrespectful. Like if I asked a question or even say hi very would just ignore me or tell me to ask someone else rudely.
2. The food. I thought some American food was nice but a very high amount of it was just too sugary and artificial. Even their bread was sweet! How can you make bread sugary?? And They say our food is bland!

3. Freedom. America is one of two countries I didn’t feel truly free. Apparently there are laws where you can’t cross the road without a crossing! Like seriously?? People are also very suspicious and someone called the police on me for suspicious activity! Even though all I did was walk along a rich neighbourhood taking pictures of the street and homes ( I like photography). The final thing is that I was walking along the street downtown with my boyfriend and someone even shouted “f*ggot go to hell were you belong!” which made us very angry and sad.

I know these things are rare and not a lot of Americans are like this but after that I am not going to that country again for a long, long time.

, I have been running a few NGOs
Greece.
Athens is a purely dystopian experience. In the downtown (which I consider to be zone up to 2 metro stops from Acropolis) there areas with literally hordes of junkies. Every single piece of the wall is painted. Everything is dirty. Atmosphere is generally unsafe, tons of drunk people at the evening trying to interact with you in a way that causes you to hold the breath.
Acropolis is a scam. 20 EUR for entrance to place that is full of building machines and it takes 10 min to see it. I understand its importance to the history but well as far as I remember Louvre wasn''''t much more expensive and offers way more.
Chalkidiki is awful, spoiled by the tourists.

Crete is acceptable only at the southern coast. North is to avoid at all costs unless you like to spend money for crap.
Almost no card payments or extra fees at ridiculous rate (such as 5%) - I don''''t believe they have interchange fee that high, it''''s just another ripoff.
I am a sailor and their infrastructure is a joke. Even in what is considered a big harbour on a big island it is not uncommon that you have to attach moorings to the lantern because there''''s no proper place on the quay. Not cool with large boat and strong wind. Then after you wait 2h for port police and next 30 min to do their ridiculous paperwork, you attach to water and electricity and half an hour later someone from the port asks if you can release it because someone else needs it. And in most of these places there's nothing to do.

Moreover I have witnessed and experienced numerous verbal aggression, especially from males toward females, however it happens also in different variants. There''''s absolutely no culture of discussion or being gentle, even the simplest problem immediately raises anger in extent that is hard to chew by anyone from country lying a bit to the north.
Maybe I will come back there, but not soon and only for a really good reason.

Don’t get me started on Georgia. That country should be wiped off the face of the map!
I arrived in Kutaisi at 4am. Me and the other passengers were standing in line to exchange money, but before we go through immigration. An immigration officer comes up to me, and me only, and asks for my passport. I was a little confused about the situation, but I let it go. The next day, we went to Armenia for 1 week. Things go mostly smoothly. After that week was finished, we returned to Georgia. It was a small land border crossing. My 2 friends were ahead of me in line, one was getting his passport stamped, then a border patrol officer comes up to me and asks for my passport then gives it back to me, less than a minute before I had to present it to the border guard for stamping. At this point, I was furious and livid. It was insulting and based on my skin color, 100%. Georgia is NOT an attractive place for illegal immigration, or really any immigration. The only immigrants I saw were people fleeing war torn countries, such as Syria.

On top of that, I got food poisoning from some fucking Georgian food stand. Apparently, I ate the bad slab of pork. The poisoning lasted for early 48 hours. During the rest of the week after I was well, It was a constant hassle haggling with taxi drivers who were trying to rip me off, and dealing with bars and clubs who were obviously adding extra Lari to my bill. The trip ended with me cursing at a taxi driver for ripping us off. On top of that, the country was unorganized, chaotic, and 3rd world.
I like to collect currencies when I travel somewhere, but I had zero interest in keeping any Georgian Lari. I’d like to forget the whole experience actually.
I learned 1 of 2 things from this experience:

1. I think that I need to stick with first world, developed countries (such as Western Europe and North America) for my future travels.
2. If I EVER go to a 3rd world country again, I’ll be better prepared to handle the experience

Isaiah Howard
, lives in The United States of America
I’ve been to 40 states (I’m American) and 20+ countries. Any country I have ever visited, I would return to. No problem.
However, while I can’t say “never again” for certain, there are three cities and one US state that I have no interest in seeing again:

1. Sydney, Australia: Boring and bland. Even the central business district, even considering the harbour and The Rocks, can be done and forgotten about in a day or two. Little architectural distinction between neighborhoods (North Sydney, Kirribilli and Cronulla are beautiful, but they still become boring). Opera House is actually not all that attractive, when seen up close. Didn’t get the fuss about Bondi Beach. Terrible urban planning—worse than Los Angeles’, in some respects. Experienced some legitimately awful customer service—rude, inconsiderate—that will probably stand out with me for many years to come. I met some great souls in Sydney, but they still weren’t enough to balance out my underwhelming first impression and lousy second impression of the city. This said, if you get the opportunity to go to Sydney, go. Just use it as a springboard to visit other places in Australia.

2. Melbourne, Australia: Also boring and bland. CBD has some public art and beautiful gardens, which Melburnians are over-the-moon about, but I was frankly more impressed with the public art I’ve seen up in Brisbane, yet alone some Kiwi, European, and American cities. I didn’t “get” the Docklands. Locals seem to be very condescending and patronizing in their attitude toward the rest of Australia..
Plus, Tullamarine Airport is the only airport in the world where I’ve ever had to pay an immediate fee for my carry-on baggage weighing over the limit. How much was I over? 0.1 kg! That’s it. 0.1 kg. Even when I took my sweater and water bottle out of the bag and held those in my hands, airline staff insisted on weighing the total of all of the contents that were within my backpack. Also, Jetstar’s entire check-in process there is inefficient and understaffed, the worst of any of Jetstar kiosk I experienced in Australia. What was remarkable was how calm I remained throughout all this, though I politely made sure each Jetstar staff person I interacted with knew how dissatisfied I was. Ugh. All this said, if you get the opportunity to go to Melbourne, go. Just use it as a springboard to visit other places in Australia.

3. San Diego, California, USA: In short, the locals are pricks, the cuisine is subpar, and the attractions (and general cost of living) cost as much as in nearby, more vibrant, more cosmopolitan Los Angeles. Severely underwhelming, and it may be my least favorite large American metropolis (which I define as 1.5 million+ in city and suburbs). I only return because work still sends me there sometimes. I already rip San Diego apart here: Isaiah Howard''''s answer to What are the most overrated travel destinations? If your heart’s desire is to go, go. Many do still enjoy it. Just don’t invite me.

4. South Carolina, USA: Southern hospitality is a myth in this state. For starters, I’ve driven all over the world and like to think that I drive with a sort of polite assertiveness. South Carolinians don’t seem to get that concept, as they’re happy to flip you off and lay into their horns the nanosecond the light turns green—and they call “yankees” bad.
Furthermore, customer service—from restaurant waitstaff (tip-dependent or fast food), to baristas, to hotel staff, to AirBNB hosts, to tour guides—were aloof, disinterested, and fake-friendly at best, and impolite with short attitudes at worst. Walking around Charleston, no one looked happy. Didn’t get all the state pride, seeing the state flag on every sixth lunch box, clunker car, and light pole.
. All this said, there is some wonderful food, and the Atlantic coastline is so comforting. Also, as I’m a native Southerner, I’m willing to give the state another chance…someday, maybe.

Russia. I’ve been there four times, once for a scientific conference, and three times for discussion of arms control, and I find the Russian culture and art and people wonderful. Under the communist regime I always felt personally safe. Because of my security clearances, I sensed that the KGB kept me under surveillance (indeed, one time my wife was approached in an attempt to find out more about me). As a result, I felt secure; nobody could accost me without me getting off immediate defense from my KGB followers.

But I’ve had a close friend, Dan Ford, who interacted with the Putin government, and was threatened with murder if he didn’t comply with their illegal demands. “We’ve learned that it would be cheaper to have you killed than to buy your shares” he was told.
When Dan reported this to the FBI, they told him that such behavior had become common under the Putin regime, and that there was nothing they could do. They suggested that he give up ownership of the Russian company he had cofounded. He did, losing all of his substantial investment, but saving his own life.

His story is very similar to that of Bill Browder, but in Browder’s case, his close colleagues actually were murdered. You can read his story in the book Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder, and One Man''''s Fight for Justice, by Bill Browder. I highly recommend this book; it gives a remarkable insight into what is currently happening in Russia. I asked Browder if his book put his life in additional danger, and he told me that he hoped for the opposite. Now that he has gone public, it makes it much more difficult for Putin to simply kill him.
If Putin and his kind of government is ever replaced, then I could imagine going back.

Fernando Avelino
, CEO of my home...not always (1994-present)
First on the list would be Brasil.
It's going to be very difficult to ever convince myself to ever go back to Brasil (São Paulo). I spent 18 months living there. So this isn’t something I’m saying based on just visiting one city or town in that country.
The first week there were still quite shocking. But worst of all, locals like the cabbies (but not only) will try and screw you over shamelessly at every chance they get.

1. The first taxi I got into from Campinas tried to rip me off of all my money, with threats that left me in a neighborhood commanded by the PCC. I survive paying one over-priced trip 5x times more.
2. There were so many beggars everywhere, childrens in the traffic lights and many places were destroyed like they just got out of a civil war. Favelas and more favelas until lose sight. Drug dealers on every corner. After these week, I was starting to deal with the reality of the country.

3. I realized much later that nearly every single person I had met was trying to get something from me. No one would be friend of me without any other reason that is not to try to get some money out of me. I''''m from Portugal; European so I''''m rich...Some people were nice and humble, but they weren’t the vast majority. There are also a lot of people who are hostile to "gringos" white males, probably because I''''m from Portugal and maybe they see me as the former conquerors...Who knows? Not that once the locals figure out that I’m a foreigner, they will view me as a “walking bag of money”, like some feathered bird to be plucked. And I don’t like living in a place where enough people (certainly not everyone) will try and cheat me. Even if just 10% of the population is like that, it is enough to mess up your life. Especially the ones you have to deal with like cab drivers, shop keepers and restaurant owners. I have to constantly haggle knowing that the locals are trying to screw over tourists 24/7.

4. Taking a bus after 18.00H was so dangerous. The roads were completely destroyed, there was a freaking amount of motorcycles and trucks on the roads, and the bus driver had to constantly make very dangerous maneuvers to get the bus to the destination on time.
5. The food was good tasty, but I was also constantly sick for three weeks because of poor hygiene conditions from eating there. I had to take antibiotics to stop the diarrhea. I’ve been to many places where life isn’t easy, and I know I can’t blame these countries for being less ordered and not as clean as Europe, but Brasil was probably the worst, even dirtier than poorer places.
6. The women...I feel sorry for them. The women can''''t go alone especially at night. The things are so serious that women have their own carriage in the subway, men are forbidden to enter there.

7. One women alone evenby day can''''t kept being harrassed and groped by perverts. I see one girl been grabbed in the middle of the street in broad daylight once by a men, and his were on the verge of tearing off her clothes and raping her if it wasn’t for the help of a guard/police officer. The man just said: "you''''re mine and come with me now."
8. Not to mention that it is one of the leading nations when it comes to crime and especially murder rates. So atention to Brasil and special with Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo
Note: I just want to clarify that this was my personal experience and it was an honest retelling of that experience—without any broader racial or political thoughts or anything.
