简介:Like it or not, the United States has a big transportation problem. According to many, a high-speed rail network could help alleviate a lot of the country's transportation issues, but high-speed rail in the USA hasn't made much progress in the last 50 years. Here's why.

In the United States, everybody likes the idea of trains... but American trains are slow, clumsy, and absurdly expensive. Nobody wants to creep down the coast in an Amtrak - and to be honest, can you blame them?

The problem in the US is that when it comes to rail, people expect it to turn a profit when highways get a free pass and are grossly underfunded and overbuilt.

Don’t people know that politics. Is the reason nothing gets done in America?

I lived in Texas in the 80's and 90's and they talked a ton about HSR from Dallas to Austin, San Antonio and Houston.........NOTHING !!
And why ? Well you nailed it with the opposition you mentioned....oil, planes etc etc.

Big oil and is doing the same thing to the bullet train that they did to the Electric Car from back in the 1990's.
They used every rotten trick in the book to stifle and at least for a while, kill it.

What a coincidence it’s a oil money thing. I know I’m shocked.

The politicians CA ruined the chances of a high speed rail there because they couldn't resist taking "their cut" of the pie. If they didn't rob the coffers blind, CA would have one.

When I took my father back to Germany for his 80th birthday, we went from Frankfurt to Leipzig via the ICE (InterCity Express) Train. It wasn't high speed BUT it was faster than any other train in the US. It was cleaner, quieter, cheaper, and more luxurious / comfortable than any other US train as well. This was 2005 mind you. It's an embarrassment that America CAN'T even come close to this level of transportation for the masses!

The question is not "would you like to use a high speed train" but "are you ready to spend about 30-50 mil of public USD per mile to build a high speed line"?

I'm an Eisenhower republican. Eisenhower kept the high tax rates on the wealthy that had been enacted during WWII. He used this money to build the interstate highway system. The wealthy got their money back because they owned the companies that got the contracts to build the highway system. In the mean time their money was pumped through the economy in unx wages paid to the people who planned and built the system. This helped to create the great American middle class which has been declining ever since the idea of a trickle down economy was popularized in the Reagan administration. In a trickle down system the only people that benefit are the rich and their brokers. What we need is a new Eisenhower who will raise taxes on the wealthy and use the money to build a nationwide high speed rail system.

There is no high speed passenger network in the entire Western Hemisphere, not just the US. Where there are long trains they are slow and run on freight lines be it Brazil, Mexico, Columbia, Canada, Cuba or the US.

Pan Am the first big passenger airline was a Brazilian company not a US company.

Railroading has always been more challenging in the larger and spacer American nations, than in population dense nations with centuries of a peasant class that couldn't break out of that situation.

American prosperity is based on individual land ownership, even by the poor. Therefore the desire to open new land and new markets races further outward. It is still doing that even in the US, as we are far from full by China, Japan or even French standards.

The problem is you had to own a wagon or carriage to get you and your goods to the train in 1880. Once a convenient personal wagon was developed that could go hundreds of miles without major planning, and could beat the older trains there the die was set.

As to major trips. Once the beautiful people stopped climbing on the Silver Streak to dash from NYC to LA or Chicago, then there was no longer any need to have luxury higher speed trains. Once the railroads realized they were driving the poor about like The Bus... They threw in the towel.

So the death of the newly renovated higher speed sexy trains of the 50s in the US, Mexico and Canada was the celebrity jetsetter. Blame an highly photographed actress before some nefarious conspiracy.

It's scary that the US can't build infrastructure any more, even with a totally proven and service ready technology like high speed rail. Money in politics, especially that of the evil ideologies like the Koch brothers, will be America's undoing unless things change radically.

Because of oil companies.
And automakers.
And airlines.
They're the ones stopping high-speed rail in its, well, tracks.

Every survey of Texans ever taken regarding a Houston-to-Dallas high-speed rail line turned up the same results; yes, Texans would ride the high-speed rail, once or twice. But, after the novelty wore off, they'd rather fly, or drive. There's also the problem of procuring the right of way for the rail line. Landowners aren't willing to allow the line to cut through their property. Worse, the Houston terminal would be located northwest of the city, almost as "suburban" as Bush Intercontinental Airport. For people like me, who live in a suburban "bedroom community" miles away from the inconvenient northwest side, would rather just drive, or, if we're in a hurry, fly on Southwest Airlines out of Houston's close-in Hobby Airport.
