The Importance of First Aid

Even experiencing it as a bystander, an accident is not a pleasant scene.

If an accident happens in the workplace, you cannot be a helpless witness, since simply standing by can potentially worsen the situation. This is why it’s important to have at least a basic knowledge of first aid.

At its most basic, first aid is the initial assistance given to a victim of injury or illness. Comprised of relatively simple techniques that can be performed with rudimentary equipment, first aid is usually carried out by a layperson until professional medical assistance arrives.

Providing quick medical treatment until professional assistance arrives.

The importance of first aid is hard to overestimate. Among the major benefits of first aid are the following:

It affords people with the ability to provide help during various emergency situations. If someone ingests hazardous substances, or suffers health-related issues like a heart attack, or if a natural disaster occurs, a person knowledgeable in first aid becomes more than just another bystander. Instead, they become an invaluable support not only to victims, but also to professional emergency responders and medical practitioners.

First aid helps ensure that the right methods of administering medical assistance are provided. Knowing how to help a person is just as important in emergency situations. It only takes six minutes for the human brain to expire due to lack of oxygen. As such, ineptitude and misinformation will not be of much help to a person in need of medical assistance.

Knowledge in first aid also benefits the individuals themselves. Whether the emergency affects themselves directly, or involves people they live and work with, first aid stems the severity of an emergency in a given time and place.

Accidents will always happen. Because of this, properly-trained individuals and the right first aid equipment help ensure better safety for everyone. Without the proper first aid, a simple injury could turn into something much more severe. Many fatalities resulting from accidents and emergency situations result from lack of immediate medical treatment. First aid doesn’t just facilitate recovery. It helps save lives.

Okay. I am a lifeguard and a Red Cross volunteer who has seen a lot of injuries, did CPR couple times, saved and lost lives.

It is very important. Why do I think so? Firstly because in case something happens, anywhere, people would know how to properly react.

I live in a country where it is freaking common that dispatch will tell you that they don’t have a unit available for you because majority of them are dealing with drunk people who don’t need the ambulance, just don’t know what to do, but you can be having a stroke or heart attack (good luck trying to survive without permanent damage) or even worse drowning and being unconcious.

If you need to be persuaded to take the first aid class, then think about your family and friends. Add a life threating situation, such as heart attack, stroke, choking, major bleeding wounds, car accidents.Don’t freaking rely on other people. This is something that EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON EARTH can do. So take the freaking class and do us all a major service. Thank you.

First aid is defined as the steps or the procedures taken to make sure that the person who has got injured is prevented from getting their condition worse.

“First Aid preserve’s life, prevents deterioration and promotes recovery.”

Live demos, videos and an emergency handbook aids in the training, the training covers aspects of the Good Samaritan law, first aid for snake bites, dog bites, fractures, and even CPR and AED training.

VMEDO’s first aid training programmes teach the basics of first aid and also the advanced and more important techniques like CPR and AED training. Over the years first aid training has become a necessity for people at home, schools and also at offices where one is most likely to spend most of their time. These first aid training help us to be prepared in case of contingencies and possibly save the lives of our near and dear ones in times of emergency.

VMEDO app also provides the necessary steps that are to be followed for first aid with steps that can be also read and heard on the go to make first aid free of confusions and hassles. The VMEDO app also can aid in the booking of ambulances at just the touch of a button.

It depends. Do you want to be prepared to be able to help family, friends and/or strangers, when inevitable accidents and medical emergencies occur? If the answer is yes, then I think First Aid is a good course to take.

As a CPR/FA instructor, I can tell you with certainty that you can become CPR and First Aid certified in just one day, and you will learn critical skills that you can apply to all kinds of emergencies, from minor to potentially catastrophic. A day’s commitment is not much when compared to the amount of good you can do with those skills.

Having responded to every type of emergency you can imagine, I was always surprised and somewhat disappointed as to how lost and unprepared virtually all bystanders were. Most hadn’t the faintest idea what to do. If I had my choice, I’d make CPR and First Aid a requirement for graduating high school, in order to reduce the ineffectiveness of bystanders in emergencies, but that likely isn’t realistic.

You would be surprised as to how many people die because bystanders don’t start CPR, and EMS can’t always get there in time before brain death occurs. If you would potentially know exactly what to do to help in the face of a wide variety of medical emergencies, then please spend the 8 hours it takes to get a CPR and first aid cert. Check the American Heart Association or American Red Cross websites for information on when and where classes are offered. The lixs I provided go directly to their course information pages. If you lucky, you might even be able to find a free course.

To be clear, first aid classes are limited in scope. If you want even more training consider a first responder course, or perhaps even an EMT-Basic class. However, those are considerably more of a time commitment. If you want just the basics, first aid and CPR are a good first step. CPR/First Aid won’t match the training of EMS personnel, but the skills you learn could be enough to potentially make the difference between life and death for someone you care about, before professional help arrives.

If you injure yourself or someone you care about in any way it will allow you administer care immediately to avoid any prolonged pain and/or suffering.

Not to mention the possibility of saving you or their life (especially children).

Plus responding immediately to an injury could also allow you to avoid undue scarring. Like a cut or burn for example.

My cousin for example when she was six she had gotten burn on the right side of her back, but because of her older brother had waited to call someone because he didn't know what he was doing to help her and had forgotten to call someone had caused her to have a larger scar than she would have had.

To this day she refuses to wear a bathing suit or a dress that could show her back in any way. She is a beautiful woman with a great figure, but because of what happened she is always self conscious about wearing certain clothes.

This is just one example of how important first aid can be.

If I had my way, it would be compulsory for everyone to take a basic first aid class. It stands to reason. Imagine the stress taken off every medical service in the world if everyone knew (and maintained up to date) basic first aid. Firstly, there would be less emergency calls, as small incidents could be dealt with at home, workplace or street. Secondly, minor incidents would be dealt with quickly and correctly, preventing them from becoming major incidents (such as bleeding management). Thirdly, major incidents would be dealt with quickly as emergency services would be more available (by not attending minor incidents). There would be less deaths (less burden on family, friends and emergency services), less permanent injuries (less burden on family, friends, emergency services and the health care system) and less stress on those needing first aid and those treating (as they would know what they are doing). If everyone learnt first aid, the amount of money the government spent on treating casualties, managing patients and increasing resources to maintain this need, could be redirected to training in first aid (being proactive, instead of reactive) and improving health care. I’ve taught hundreds of kids the importance of first aid, the elder ones’ most often comments were: “Now to get mum and dad trained…good luck!”. The number of times I have attended an incident to find bystanders doing nothing is saddening.

So yes, it is VITALLY important for everyone to learn first aid in my eyes.

Knowledge of First Aid is invaluable both to you individually and to your community. It allows you to assist persons who get injured in the event of an accident or emergency until assistance arrives. First Aid skills can be applied at home , in the workplace or in public places, so the safer that community becomes in a community the more First Aid certified people there are.

I really struggle with this question. I struggle because I don't understand why people wouldn't want to know it.

For your family, friends, even someone injured in the street. It is our duty as humans to help those in need but in addition to that, to understand what to do is an incredible feeling.

I get extremely annoyed that CPR is not taught in schools. Almost every single person I have been to who survived, did so because CPR was started quickly. These are people who get a chance to go home. To see their families.

Human bodies are susceptible to injuries, illnesses, and trauma. We never know when an injury may happen to us or the somebody we love or those who are around us. Thus it is always good to have some amount of basic information to take care of critical conditions, to keep it from going from bad to worse or till the medical help arrives.

It's important to know first aid as it can help you save someone's life if there is a situation where first aid is needed. For example if you ate driving along and you see a car accident with someone severely bleeding you can help stop that bleeding and increase their chance of survival compared to you not knowing what to do and calling 911 instead which had a average arrival time of 5–15 minutes which by that time it may be to late to help
