I don't recommend that people get Chinese character tattoos if you don't speak/write Chinese and Chinese/China has no significance in your life. I don't recommend people do it for the fun of it, or simply because Chinese characters look exotic and cool. Perhaps I see tattoos a bit differently to other people. It's a mark you keep for life, it should be significant to your person. It shouldn't be random.

My wife’s ex classmate who travelled with her had a tattoo of her own name in Chinese. I still can’t stop laughing now . Here it goes. Her name is Andrea in Spanish . So by Chinese translation I would say it can be “安德莉亚” which is completely fine. However the tattto on her arm where literally everybody can see is written as “安德烈” which is “Andre” for sure !!!!! I told my wife never tell her the truth because it will really make her sad . But man … them tattoo artists should really make sure they don’t tattoo random Chinese characters on people’s body …

Well, it actually depends on what the tattoo is. As for me, it is interesting if I see someone get a tattoo which actually is kind of bad language in Chinese or something Chinese will never take it as a choice of tattoo. I think it is the same if an American see someone with a tattoo written in English whose actually meaning is that kind of thing American would never take it as tattoo. We feel nothing but interested, curious……and might think the guy is a little cute ^-^.

It’s alright. Because it’s common in China for people to choose Chinese characters when they want a tattoo - though tattoo itself is not very common. Many people may think you are weird when they see that you have a tattoo and when seeking for a job, you may not get hired because of that.

There was a time in my middle school where tattoos with Chinese characters are considered very cool. But since the school prohibit us to have tattoos, my friend drew it with pen.

But my instructor once told me he saw many people in Switzerland(when he pursued his college degree in Berne) have Chinese tatoos like ‘ 狼，狗’， which mean ‘ wolf, dog’ . My instructor explained some people just like the radical '犭' , thinking this radical is pretty cool. And that's true!! Chinese characters which have this radical usually have the meaning of fierceness. But it's still a little bit weird to see people tattooed their arm with the name of animals. Anyway… as long as you like it, it will be cool!

It actually depends on the meaning of the character, I have seen some people tattooed meaningless and ridiculous character on their body, which may make you think they don’t know anything about Chinese culture, and they do this more out of playing cool than understanding the meaning of the character. I am not saying that you need to be excel in Chinese culture, but if this is something you tattooed in your body, then at least, you should know a little bit about it. Otherwise, if you tattooed sth really old-fashioned or weird stuff, you only make yourself a fool to Chinese, no offense.

I’d be way more impressed if they actually knew what it meant or if they actually have an appreciation for Chinese culture. I feel like many of them just do it because they wanna seem cool and “cultured”. Imagine if on the reverse side, a Chinese person having the word “water” or “fire” tattooed on their arms.
