I can tell you the story from Thai history during the WWII. Thailand was in good ally with British government before it was invaded by Japan. British government sent the news to Bangkok that Japan will use Thailand as the base for attacking Malaysia and Burma, but did not send further help as they believed Thailand will fall under Japan power. Thai government at the time was under General Plaek Pibunsongkram's regime. Since British did not send any help and Thai army did resist shortly and gave up the fight and signed to ally with Japan.
Japan want to ally with Thailand with bilateral relationship by giving Thailand to control its internal affairs. Thai government was forced to declare war with The Allies Power, but there was a group of elites who did not agree with the government's decision on declaring war with other western nations and they performed underground resistance during the end of the WWII. Thailand was attacked greatly by the western air forces until the war ended. Those who opposed Thai government under General Plaek helped the Allies Power to win the war and overthrew General Plaek from the government. By that helping action, Thailand was punished a little after the war ended. After the war, Thailand lost about 7,600 lives (about 2,000 are civilians) which is quite little comparing to the loss in Malaysia and Burma.
I have to say we were lucky that Japan had different intension when they forced an ally with Thailand.

Indeed, I always wondered in this part of the history. What I was told is the king of Thailand told the Japanese that you can come to my country, but leave my people alone.

I have to edit my comment here since I've just realized that in the time of the WWII was the reign of King Rama VIII, not VII as I earlier mentioned, and he had no power at the time because Thailand had become constitutional monarchy and King Rama VIII was very young and he did not stay in Thailand. The king could not say anything to anyone as he had no real power and too young to involve. Japan did bad things to some local Thais who opposed them, but those unspeakable things was not as many as it happened to people in China. This is why Thais forgot about Japan's invasion faster than Chinese.

The Japanese convinced the Thai government to ally with them, essentially after moving troops into Thailand. The Thai government (and people) decided that there was more to gain at that time from cooperating with Japan. I think it was the Japanese 56th division that moved into Central Thailand from French Indochina while other forces landed in Thailand close to the Malay border, preparatory to pursuing the campaign South into Malaya towards Singapore and also Westward to Rangoon in British held Burma.
In fact, the alliance allowed the brief Thai-French Indochina war to occur and, IIRC, Thailand managed to regain some Thai claimed territory heretofore held in the region of French Indochina. I don't think the relationship lasted the entire war, but they were occupied by Japan and isolated from most Allied forces so there was little which could be actively done in opposition.
In answer to your question, then, why invade when you can persuade the nation to either side with you and/or accept some occupation?

Just one correction, the Franco-Siamese war happened before the Japanese invasion and the engagement were purely between Thai army and the French Indochina army. It's an ambition of the Thai nationalism government after known that France fell to the Germany in Europe and several protests in Bangkok propose the reclaiming of loss land. It's start when Thai government propose to the Vichy France to adjust the territorial border but had been rejected by them. Thai army launch an attack and dominating the joint French-colonial army inland but Thai army lose the battle at sea in the battle of koh Chang. After that the negotiation was occurred with the Japanese government as the mediator, as a result France decided to cede the land occupied by Siamese army to Thailand. This is one of the reason that Thai Government didn't expect the attack by the Japanese afterward since the relationship in that periods between both countries are pretty good.

The main reason was that Thailand was independent and not a colony. All the rest of Southeast Asia were colonies of one of the European powers and Japan’s propaganda said that she was going to liberate Southeast Asia from the western powers. In that Japan hoped that the Southeast Asia countries would be beholden to Japan for helping them.
With that in mind, Japan couldn't well invade and attack the only independent country in Southeast Asia right?

This question is based on a false assumption.
Japan attacked and invaded Thailand in December 1941. Thai forces tried to resist. But soon it was clear that Thailand could not stop Japan. Therefore, the Thai government decided to surrender and it was able to make a deal with Japan:
Thailand was allowed to keep its government, but there were two conditions:
Thailand can never speak or act against Japan.
Thailand must allow Japanese troops to operate in Thailand or to pass through Thailand on the way to Burma.
Towards the end of the war Thai politicians realized that Japan and Germany were going to lose the war. Therefore, they changed sides and allied themselves with the American side. For this reason, Thailand was only punished lightly, even though the Thai government had supported Japan during most of the war.
The Thai prime minister who had worked with Japan during the war became prime minister again after the war.

From the start of the Pacific war, the Imperial Japan was eager to invade British colonized Malaya and Burma. They then pressured the Thai government to give passage for their troops to station in the geostrategic Thailand. Realizing they had little to resist against the Japanese, The Thai government considered a cooperation with them.
It was because of their "clever" that Japanese requested it prior to directly invading them. The British didn't invade Thailand because they were clever to co-operate with them. Same happened when Japan turned disadvantaged in the Pacific war, they allied with the US.
