The recommendation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration to pause use of the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine — citing six women who developed serious blood clots in their brains after vaccination — could hardly have come at a worse time.

This news arrived just as vaccination eligibility was opening up and a whole new tranche of people were making the decision to either get or refuse the stick of a needle. Nearly half the eligible population has received at least one injection. Uptake is still limited by vaccine supply in many places. But as public health authorities try to reach the country’s second half — or at least enough to reach herd immunity — they will eventually be recruiting along a descending path of public enthusiasm. And any news that heightens the impression of risk makes their task harder.

Free riders are people who benefit from the public good but don’t have to pay or sacrifice for it. In the case of a pandemic, free riders are those who enjoy the positive result when other people get vaccinated — lower transmission of the virus and eventual herd protection — but refuse to take a tiny risk and get vaccinated themselves. The challenge comes, of course, when lots of people realize they can be free riders, and the public good is destroyed.

It worked on welfare, before the Dems overturned it. You have many people refusing to look for work, because thanks to the extra money coming from the feds for unemployment, these people make more sitting on their butts than they would by working. The Dems make it sound like the gravy train will last forever.

Although I did get vaccinated I have to say that those who refuse to get the vaccine are acting on a strong distrust of our government. Is it warranted? Just look at the lies coming out of Washington on a daily basis. Do you think those living in Flint, Michigan trust government any more? Where are the millions of high paying green jobs? What has come out of Dr. Kevorkian - oops, I mean Dr. Fauci's mouth today that is completely opposite of what he said yesterday?
It is understandable where the distrust comes from. If there are any free-riders in this country just look at our elected officials...

I not sure of the point in my life when science became political. It certainly wasn't when children were vaccinated for polio, or humans first landed on the moon. Perhaps it was when Al Gore became spokesman for global warming, or when the government outlawed lead in gasoline, or made us wear seat belts.
Whatever the reasons, it's sad to have a political party that believes everything a politician running for office says, over the words of those that have saved millions of lives, and given us the technology we find indispensable on a daily basis.

It was when our esteemed leaders found they could control the population under the guise of "public safety". "Why this will save thousands of lives" they told us and quoted questionable statistics to back themselves up. Who will argue about saving lives so we dutifully follow any orders. Those who question this authority are labeled crackpots, criminals or enemies of society.
Funny to see that those activities that are not banned just happen to coincide with huge political donations or massive taxes. So smoking cigarettes is OK as long as the government gets a couple of dollars per pack...
