A man had tried to end his life by drinking drain cleaner. He was an old man living alone, with only occasional visits from social services, and so when he vomited the solution and passed out on the floor he wasn't found for a day or so.

When he came in to the ER he was covered in chemical burns spilling unto his chest from where his mouth had been. I say had been, because the chin came off the hinges, muscle and tissue being dissolved. Seeing his jaw put aside like a spare part, tongue halfway dissolved, throat exposed was not something I will ever forget. Now, you'd think he would be DOA, but his vitals still hung in there and he had extensive surgery after being put in a medicly induced coma.

After living in the hospital for a couple of weeks, painfully being trained, gavaged and prepared for his home environment, he went through the door and straight up put a shotgun to his head.

When I was 5 I watched my dad dive in to the swimming pool he built in our backyard and break his neck. He became a quadriplegic. Then I had to watch him slowly fade away and die over the next 20 years. I watched everyone of his friends abandon him, and his family members slowly start to resent him, and then openly talk about how they will be relieved when he’s gone. Even his mother.

This is a very unfortunate "side effect" of serious/chronic health problems. The same thing happened to me when I first became more open about my health problems, and just spiraled out after my kidneys finally failed. First lost my job, then one by one, all my friends stopped showing up, then stopped communicating all-together. Now I just keep to myself as much as possible. I had to force myself to just accept that I don't get to have a normal life.

I didn’t get to have a childhood. I was his nurse, an emotional support for my mom, and a father to my brother. It made me learn that when tragedy strikes, everyone has limits. As you can imagine I don’t trust people that easily. If ever.

Video of a dude that hit a guardrail going over 150 on a motorcycle, basically split his head in half and a good portion was just...gone. However, he was still alive and trying to breath through the flaps of what was left of his face making this ethereal sound I will never forget.

In real life, I was contracted to supervise an electrical portion to restart a decommissioned paper machine. These things are huge and produce sheets that are rough but the end user can easily reintroduce water to make it pulp and make whatever.

Anyway, running a sheet through requires a rope to pull tension against the drums and thread the head-end of the paper through. Dude running the rope under the slitter raised his hand to much and barely hit this blade. Think huuuge, scalpel level sharp, blade capable of cutting through stacks of this sheet at a time. Instead of just putting his hand down he satched it as a reflex. The blade cut from 2/3 up his arm all the way down to the tips of his knuckles, the only thing that stopped it was bone.

He slapped his skin and meat back on his forearm and ran to find people. Someone asked him what happened and, in shock I suppose, removed his hand and it all just fell away again. It was crazy, I was outside talking to an engineer about an issue and ran over and saw that. You think blood would just pour, and it did, but the kid was grabbing his forearm so hard he had basically made a tourniquet and stopped bloodflod and what had initially came out had basically fell away. When he let go all the blood started coming again but it was all these small little dots that just kept rushing.

Potikanda
Oh my God. Did he live? Did he lose the arm? Were they able to patch him back up?

BauranGaruda
He did live and for the most part he regained function of the arm but they did have to eventually amputate two fingers. Even though the blade didn't deglove any of the fingers there was lack of bloodflow or trauma related to those two that made them eventually "die off" so they removed them.

Driving down the interstate and there's a slowdown. Once I get through traffic there are several police cars already there. A man in a biker uniform laying in the middle of the right lane motionless. The top half oh his head is red and there's a very neat pile of brains just above it. Keep driving and see a deer fawn also dead. Keep driving and see a damaged motorcycle. Dude hit the fawn and launched it, hit the ground head first. Bike continued for some time then fell over.

All I could think was that poor bastard woke up not knowing it was his last day on earth. Wear a helmet.

I was working at a chemical plant years ago and saw a guy take a corner too fast in a fork truck and flip it over. He wasn't wearing his seat belt and was thrown out far enough for the top of the cage to crush his head. I can still picture his blood running down a nearby drain.

Forklifts are death machines. For every year you drive a forklift, you see or hear another horror story.

A lighthearted one though; one time we was all in the shop office and a crackhead stole the damn forklift. Boss man was looking at the camera too, wondering what the crackhead was doing. The crackhead jumps in the seat, speeds off at max speed. The boss was running full speed but couldn't catch him. We had to call the cops and he ended up in a 6 police car pursuit. We had just fueled up too, so we were all thinking it was going to be a long chase. Nope, crackhead ended up getting the damn forklift stuck on top of a boulder about 2 miles away.

And if you think about it, how the fuck did he even do that, as the forklift was super low to the ground and heavy as shit. But crackheads do crackhead things.

We had to send another forklift to pick up the original forklift, and drive it back to work. We were getting strange looks driving 2 forklifts down a very busy street. Overall it was a good day.

qupada42
Where the heck are you buying your speedy forklifts?

Our 3T electric at work tops out at 14km/h (not quite 9mph), hard to imagine most people not being able to keep up with it on foot.

On solid tyres and with negligible suspension, not sure I'd really want to be going much faster than that anyway, fairly rough ride.

Someone throwing himself in front of a subway train. That thud will haunt me forever. At least I knew better than to look back once I heard it. I left the station and walked across town for nearly an hour. Luckily I wasn’t in a hurry.

I saw a guy jump in front of an express train that was going at full speed. It was quite a while ago so the front of the train was not aerodynamic like modern trains. All I will say is that the police used full biohazard suits to clean up the aftermath.

A guy I know threw himself in front of an express train. They only way they could identify him was a a tattoo on a piece of skin at the side of the tracks. He was completely obliterated.

Both of my parents had jumpers (they were subway operators) and it seriously messes you up. Both suicides were only 2 months apart too. Please if you are looking to end your life, do not jump in the way of subways. You may think it’ll be quick but most times you’ll still be alive to be able to feel your body being crushed by tons and tons of moving metal. Plus, you’ll also be putting a huge burden on the drivers as they basically just killed someone.

I was vacationing in Mexico, staying at a resort on the beach. They had rides you could take in an ultralight trike plane. Needless to say no one wanted to go up in that. One morning we were all sitting on the beach and watch someone get into it and go for a ride with the pilot. They take off climb a few hundred feet in the air air it immediately just flips upside down and comes crashing down right in front of us on the beach. Dug a huge crater in the sand. We all ran over immediately and unfortunately they were both horrifically mangled and very obviously dead. Being mexico, they just sat out there until the end of the day until someone came along and picked them up.

A human leg, tennis shoe still on, sticking out of a large plastic KFC bag. A few minutes before it had been attached to a motor cycle rider who was not as attentive as he should have been.

How did the kfc bag get mixed up in this??

SpaceDave83
They wanted to pack the leg in ice and take it to the hospital to try to reattach it to the guy. The accident happened in front of a KFC restaurant, so they used what was handy.

While traveling pre-dawn, my dad and I (at this time, a kid) passed a car on fire. I could see a human form flailing around in the driver’s seat.

Dad drove right on by. I screamed at him that we needed to help them. His response was to say, “They’re better off dead”, and keep driving.

I mean, he was probably right. This was when cell phones were very uncommon, and people didn’t carry fire extinguishers in their cars, so by the time we got help for them, it would either be too late or the injuries would be excruciating and crippling.

But still. His callousness scarred me.

As a dad, I think I’d do the same thing. I wouldn’t want my son to see any more of a person burning to death than you already had. Regardless, I am sorry you had to witness that and experience your dads callousness.

When I still lived in a big city in California, I once was in a traffic jam that happened pretty quickly. When I finally got to the bottleneck, I see what once was a human being on the opposite side of the highway. He had been thrown from his vehicle on my side of the highway over the barrier, then hit by multiple cars.

He had no arms or legs anymore. Just a bloody torso.

Probably the worst for me was one night around 10 pm I was sitting on my porch when I heard tire squealing and a explosion I drove out to the main road and saw scattered debris all over the place and I saw the car wrapped around a tree first thing I did was call the police and when dispatch asked me was anybody hurt I went and looked and their was 3 occupants the driver male was unconscious but badly hurt the rear passenger was partially ejected and actually pinned in-between the window frx and the tree and the female occupant was the only one with a seat belt on and her spine was sticking up out of her neck it was sickening.

I’m not sure. I have two. I’ve been a police officer in a busy area for 20 years.

When I was a brand new rookie. 22 years old. It was a quiet morning and I got a call in my patrol area with a man shooting children. I want sure if was real at first, but that’s quite an adrenaline dump. In a bad way. I arrive onscene and see a middle aged woman screaming in the front yard of a townhouse. I knew it was real then. I ran inside with my gun drawn. The father had already shot himself in the head. The gun was on the floor. That was the mother outside. He had shot his two kids. My first thought was find the kids. I ran. I found the first child (12) on the stairs. He was dead. I moved on to the basement. The second child, (I think 8) was still gasping for air. He had also been shot in the head. I didn’t know what to do. There was no training to make me fix this. I put pressure on his head with a pillow, but it wasn’t stopping anything. He died on the way out the door to the ambulance. I was covered in blood. It was hot out, but I put on my jacket to cover up the blood. I had to talk to the mom. It was my area and I had to take the report. I stood there for a couple seconds in disbelief. A senior officer slapped me in the back and said “we have work to do” or something like that. So I just kept going and didn’t think about it.

we get a call for a domestic dispute. A guy around 55 or 60 lives with his GF about the same age. We go here all the time. It’s routine. We get there and there are two people outside the house. A guy and a girl who are not the two I just spoke of. The guy says, “he lit her on fire.” I say “what?!” The GF appears in the driveway and it’s hard to describe. She’s not on fire anymore. But all her skin is hanging off her body like cloth. She’s severely Burnt all over. Again I have no training that could come anywhere close to fixing this. I told her to lean up against my police cruiser. The friend that was also in the front of her house said that her boyfriend poured gasoline over her, and set her on fire. That was the morning that I learned this statistic. Add your age + the percent of your body burned. The closer you are to the number 100 , the closer your are to death. She had about 75% her body burned. She died a week later. Then I noticed the whole house is going up in flames. This was a fucked up situation. The friend told me that the suspect (BF) left in a car. I broadcast a lookout for attempted murder and arson. We caught him eventually and he is in prison for life now.

It’s helpless to know that you can’t help someone. You can try. But you are powerless when you cannot stop the death part, no matter how hard you try. I’m not alone. So many other first responders, military, and hospital staff have experienced the same or worse. I have a million more stories that are almost equally horrifying. So do other people. We didn’t have counseling when I first started but things have gone in a new direction. I have a psychologist to help with PTSD related things now, and I am thankful for that.
