What is essential to have in your fridge at all times?

Having just condiments is pretty sad, but not having condiments at all is a whole different level of low.

Brainwrongs_
The feeling of buying the ingredients to make something you really fancy. It's ready and you're just about to eat so you open the fridge and realise at the last second that you don't have that one specific condiment you like with it.

manderly808
I'll never forget the time I was invited to eat at my aunt's boyfriend's house (why, I have no clue). I had to have been around 11 or so.

The man had no salt. No salt-like product. How do you not own salt? If you choose not to eat salt for whatever reason, how do you not own salt for people you invite over? It's like the one basic seasoning.

I'm 41 and whenever that comes to mind I still get annoyed at the idea of it.

manderly808
I'll recall this on my deathbed I'm sure.

You'd think a man who chooses to forgo salt would find other wonderful herbs and spices to season his cooking with. But you'd be wrong.

My best friend got adopted at 14 by a lovely yet very bland family with zero spice, salt or condiments, despite being quite well off. I definitely brought her salt, pepper and ketchup on regular.

Boiled chicken, green beans and rice. Nothing more. Insane.

Why do people live this way. It's not like salt is expensive anymore either. This isn't ancient Greece or whatever.

Damn, your story just reignited a memory I thought I got rid of a long time ago. One year (1999 or 2000?), I went with my then girlfriend and her parents up to my gf's aunt and uncle's house for Thanksgiving. It was almost 3 hours away to begin with (near Green Bay, WI.). We get there, there is NO alcohol, there is no football because there is NO FUCKING TV, and there wasn't a single grain of salt on any of the food, and no one brought their own. WORST Thanksgiving EVER and she ended up being the absolute WORST girlfriend anyone would ever have to misfortune to ever get involved with. FUCK YOU RONDA.

My fridge is usually mostly condiments, pickles and left overs. But this is because when I buy fresh meat and veggies I tend to use them immediately. So not so sad in context.

A strange jar of something completely unlabelled and hidden toward the back. It stays there for years and keeps people guessing.

Please stop coming to my grandma's house

yeah_thatschill
my grandma had something in her cupboard that was fucking 10 years past its date

Those are some rookie numbers my man. Back in like 2014 or so we found food that expired in the mid 90s in my grandparents house. I think that was also homemade jam from the 80s.

Jidaque
When we were renovating our stairs we found a few jars of asparagus from the 1930s :D

We also threw a lot of old food away after my grandpa passed, but unfortunately I didn't pay attention to the dates on it.

Old houses and old people are always interested in this regard.

I found nondescxt goo in a canning jar from ‘77 in the garage pantry at my Grandma’s, I wasn’t brave enough to open it

filthyriver
In the 80's I went to my best friend's grandparents house in the country. I was fascinated with their pantry, there were home preserved vegetables that were dated in the 1930's.

At that point, it's a family heirloom.

If you're a type 1 diabetic, a nicely chilled stockpile of insulin.

Leftovers that I will never actually eat.

Blaine_The_Mono_
Leftovers go through 3 phases. 1) I can still eat this because I just cooked it yesterday but I won’t. 2) it’s been 2-3 days, I should really eat that now before it goes bad. 3) why did I even save that, now it’s been 4 days and it’s definitely bad but I don’t want to throw it out and let it sit in my garbage can so might as well wait until garbage day.

Edit: yes I get it. You can eat leftovers after 4 days. That’s great. Personally I have leftover fish in my fridge from Thursday and it’s in phase 3. But if you want to eat food a week after it’s been cooked be my guest.

We now have a nice stockpile of quick, easy meals we can pull out in a hurry, without buying frozen meals from the store

That's awesome! This way you can throw them away 5 years later!

I feel personally attacked rn. I even date the shit I freeze, just so I know exactly how long I've kept leftovers I'll never eat.

Or when a hurricane comes and you go w/o power, like is normal in FL! I secretly don't get upset about loosing the deep freezer of food :-0 it is always full and we never have anything we want to eat from it.

I'm an expat in Vietnam. The government here did a great job with covid but we are now having the worst wave so far and in strict lockdown. There's a shortage of eggs. Its kinda like the west and toilet paper. But here it's eggs. So damn hard to find atm

Lemon juice.

-astronautical
this one for sure. i just keep fresh lemons but i’m never going back to the days where i said “this dish is good but it could use some lemon” and then not having any. honestly lemon juice can fix nearly anything.

mokayemo
I just learned today you can freeze lemons and limes whole!! I bought a big bag of each.

-astronautical
i had no idea but that’s a life changer. i fridge mine to keep them a bit longer but i’ve definitely rushed in the past to use them all before they went bad lol

Water

jvvg12
YES, THIS. I always need to have some cold water ready to go.

burningtail
I’m going to add my two cents to this, water, and every other drink you can get from a fridge is at its best when it’s right close to the freezing point. Milk? Kinda cold nah, super cold, give me a glass!

ShyluhShay
An opened box of baking soda.

Fallacy_Spotted
Baking soda does not absorb anything unless you pour it or spray it on something. The myth of an unopened box in the fridge that you throw away every 6 months is an ad campaign by Arm and Hammer to get people to buy more of their product.

Traegs_
Yup, it's totally a myth.

And surprise surprise, if you actually clean your fridge occasionally it won't smell! Every time I take the trash out I check the fridge for anything that needs to be tossed.

green_speak
I'm a firm believer in outright emptying and wiping down the fridge interior--freezer included--at least once a year. It's a pain in the ass, but it puts every item in the fridge under scrutiny and makes sure no leaked juices or errant dog hairs (our dog likes to hang by the fridge) are trapped in the nooks. Consequently, not once have we complained of a smelly fridge.

Ankerjorgensen
Wait - there are people who don't do this regularly? And once a year? I do this once a month. Granted, my fridge is rather small, just 2 shelves and a veggie-drawer, but it's not like it takes a lot of work. If you do it regularly so it's not that dirty you can have it emptied, scrubbed, dried, and back in in like 10 minutes.
