Oliver Starr, I sometimes sleep next to a wolf
Originally Answered: It is shown in movies that when you fall in vicinity of a wild animal, if you stay calm and act dead/motionless, the animal just ignores you and walks away. Does this happen in reality? If so what could be the reason behind such behavior of wild animals?
Yeah, that'll work...

In most situations this is likely to make you more vulnerable. Canines, for example, might get curious and approach a prone human and this could be enough in the wrong circumstances to provoke an attack.
There are some animals that tend to avoid carrion and since we don't smell familiar anyway, being motionless may make us seem less like something to eat.
The problem with this strategy is that you're giving away every advantage you have and simply putting yourself in nature's hands. Better to understand the animals that inhabit your region (or the place you're visiting) and learn the appropriate species-specific response for each animal.

The most important thing to take away from this question is… whichever option you take, sometimes it will work… sometimes it won’t. It entirely depends on circumstances. It all comes back to the old adage: “The only thing predictable about wild animals is that they are unpredictable”. I, as well as everyone who has worked with wildlife, can vouch for that with personal experience, and I can confidently say that without knowing any of you. The specific animal’s frx of mind comes into play; as does its original intentions. The particular species, of course, comes into play. And also, dumb luck comes into play. The only thing you can do is to follow “best practices” for each individual animal species… the advice that has been documented as what “should work” for any particular species. But even then, its a crap shoot. And even then, you need to be able to adapt to the situation even if it goes against the best advice.
If I were you, I would research the available information for each of the various species you’re likely to encounter, and just go with that. No guarantees, though. The best advice is to try to avoid this situation in the first place, through various methods: making noise, properly securing food, not walking around blind corners, being aware of your surroundings, carrying bear spray, listening to locals and guides before venturing out, and not wearing a necklace of freshly butchered meat around your neck as you go traipsing through the wilderness. That last one is particularly important! : )
This question can’t be answered with a blanket statement that will cover all circumstances, with all animals, in all countries and terrains, during all times of the year.

I suspect the best advice is to always go with a partner and always make sure you can outrun that partner.

There was a Facebook group my sister was apart of recently and was given camping tips and one said for one of the do not do. It said don’t knock down the slowest person in your group! I asked her if I could join the group so I could comment. I did and said, who in there right mind would consciously decide to knock down the slowest member? I’m looking to take out the fastest or one faster than me. Everybody should know that. The slowest, sure give that wild animal an appetizer before getting to you

On a serious note, NEVER carry candy or sweet anything into an area where there MAY be bears. Worse than a fresh meat necklace….

Dance. No, seriously, start breakdancing.
The Grizzly Man had no experience with bears, yet to the bafflement of experts was able to get up close and personal with bears and come out of it completely unscathed. His death at the hands of a grizzly bear was unrelated to his antics- he was mauled while sleeping in a tent.
One possibility that the experts raised was this- his behaviour towards bears was so confusing that the bears, unprepared by both their instincts and experiences, didn't know how to react, and just kinda froze.
From this, my conclusion is that I will learn breakdancing purely for the purpose of confusing polar and grizzly bears if I ever meet one, so it becomes too curious to want to eat me.

Edward Garner
I have the Grizzly man DVD and they do say that the beats were just confused by his behaviour like you say. They also said that he stayed too late in the season at the Grizzly Maze and that most of the bears that were familiar to him had already moved out of the area for hibernation. The bears that came into the area were desperate for food. Which led to the killing of him and his girlfriend.

yap it’s purely gambling, but the odd is much better than fighting or running which is almost impossible to win

hahaha its funny plus u make a good point

The point of bear spray is that it isn't lethal so you can use it to deter a bear that isn't yet aggressive enough to justify shooting it.
You should carry both a suitable firearm and bear spray.
A pump shotgun is not a good choice for defensive use, though. Under stress people often short stroke them, causing a jam.

I like what Bill Bryson said he would do in the event of coming across some bears:
“What on earth would I do if four bears came into my camp? Why, I would die, of course. Literally shit myself lifeless.”

well, shitting yourself lifeless would make yourself less appealing to most animals….

Bridget Collins
You forget scavengers would see shitting yourself as a dinner bell. Because the first things a lot of animals do when they die is release their bowels.

Ray Coderre
Was going to make a comment about dying each time I go to the bathroom, but I just can’t do it….

Bridget Collins
Eat more bran.

Locksher Mohes
Yeah, but if you shit yourself while still being alive, it's pretty easy to defend yourself from scavengers, unlike a hungry bear.

Bridget Collins
Locksher by scavengers, I was thinking more hyenas and coyotes.

Locksher Mohes
You have a point. I thought you were talking about the birds. Fortunately, there are no hyenas and coyotes where I live. xD

xD

Bridget Collins
When I read your comment, I realized we were probably thinking of different scavengers.
I don't have hyenas but we do have coyotes.

Locksher Mohes
That reminds me of a joke:
-What do you do if a bear approaches you?
-You climb a tree and throw shit at it.
-Where will I get shit from?
-Oh, don't worry, there will be.

The picture made me laugh because frogs do exactly that! I've had cats for years, and they've brought in a lot of playthings. Frogs are interesting because they will cover their heads and play dead. No matter how they get tossed, (or chewed on - ew) they will scramble to return to this position.

Zachary Smith
Not a bad answer, but you should add, it also depends on what the animal is after. If he is hungry, playing dead for any predator is a bad idea. If it a matter or territory then leaving slowly is probably the best option. And with some animals, actually looking and sounding as intimidating as possible is the best approach. Most bears get scared off by people yelling and shooting a gun, same with dogs. Only desensitized bears are the problem. And if you come up against an angry bear who doesnt fear humans at all, well…….better hope you have a large gun or your F-ed.

Oliver Starr
The problem with your suggestion is that it’s not always obvious what an animal is after. Even experts are often perplexed by non human behaviors. For the uninitiated, in a moment of surprise, a poor uation is pretty likely.
In the woods awareness is the first prerequisite, self education is the second. Minus both, if you get into trouble, luck is all you have left and she’s a fickle mistress.

And there's no guarantee their intentions won't change based on your behavior. A bear that was trying to scare you off might decide not to pass up an easy meal if you play dead.

Oliver Starr
Yep. You can bet this has happened and will happen again.

But on the bright side, it’s a good practice for what you are actually going to be in a minute.

Yes. You are far less likely to hurt the animal if you fake being dead; humans don't have the type of bone that choke animals. Try not to make any noise when they begin to chew on you and let them get a really good grip to prevent you from changing your mind.
It is your goal to make the best decision for the animals right?

Ravikiran Patil
You wouldn't want to do that in Hyena country. ;)

Teddy Poster
I’m no expert, but I don’t think anything would work in Hyena country, cept maybe a well made suit of armor.

Here in Alaska its accepted practice for Brown bears only, ( near sighted once get sent or aren't threatened will leave)black bears have been know to track & kill people Fish& Game biologists say stand your ground fight them off ( why carry a weapon) won't comment on polar bears , likely work a lot of northern villages put up with them in the winter months ..In bear country be noisy, smoke cigars , really don't like the smell it does work , know from experience.

Eivind
In polar-bear country, such as Svalbard, it's actually recquired to carry gun(s) when leaving the city; you're flat out not allowed to go wandering without.
They won't generally speaking always see human beings as prey, but they're curious, and they don't have enough experience with human beings to have learnt to fear us; besides "fear" of other living things isn't really in the vocabulary of an adult polarbear anyway.
Sometimes they can be scared off by loud noises, or things like flare-guns; but you still need the option to send fast lead their way in order to be reasonably safe.

David Bresson
Any North American bear will eat you if it's hungry. It's just that black bears are less aggressive, so in the rare case they attack it's often predation, and you won't deter it with anything except a show of force. More of brown bear attacks are for other reasons, where other options might work.

Marc Hoffman
I would rather be eaten by a bear than smoke a cigar ;)
