Well, this is something you don't see every day, an American and a Kenyan having a conversation in Mandarin lol.

Eric Mwash
Chinese or not, this is one project many Kenyans love to use.

I'm very surprised by how fast Kenyan Gov't can moves when they see opportunities.... Seems like Kenyans don't wait around for money to come to them.... They will jump over the fence to get it.

As an American living in China and equally interested in Africa, the conversation you had with the Uber driver was fantastic. Uber Drivers are the best.

I enjoyed listening to your Uber driver. He was very articulate and thoughtful.

That train is about as fast as Amtrak.

This is Chinese experience: put politics, law, national security under the control of the Chinese themselves. Cooperating with other countries in the economy. China old saying: Do not give it to other people if you do not like it. So China will never interfere with the internal affairs of other countries.

I wish you could have gone with the morning train.. the view of elephants, zebras in Tsavo National Park is breathtaking, Plus the view of the ocean on the uplifted railway line as you approach Mombasa Terminus is something else.

Honest conversation in the taxi, I respect that.

That taxi driver is more knowledgeable than 90% of Americans i know.

The Uber driver is on point. The Chinese mind their business. For them its about business and business alone. So I think the best way to deal with them is to mind your business, and make sure to mine from the relationship as much as possible while it lasts.

If you keep watching this channel, you will notice that most street level people are quite informed and can easily articulate issues of the day.

Although this driver has lived in China, he may not know that the Chinese government’s foreign policy for more than 70 years is like this...

Wow not only is he showing us something that our eyes will probably never see in life as far as areas in the world that we will probably never get to but Tommy is also teaching us. Amazing stuff. You are enlightening anyone that will see this. Innovations far and beyond our control thank you sabbatical for all you do once again!

the most Chinese in that station is the LED screen. those red lines, pretty much all of it is exactly what they have here

He speaks in broken Swahili to the Taximan and the Taximan replies, "What time is your train..", in perfect English.
And then the Taximan starts to speak in Chinese!!! Does it get any better than that??? Anyone still afraid to travel to Africa?

This was thrilling to watch and you captured the journey well. Now my biggest problem is the whining nature of Kenyans, we are too cynical of everything. Yes, governments are seldom liked anywhere in the world even when they do great things for their populations. The SGR was constructed in a record 3-4 years, from Mombasa to Nairobi, a distance of 500km. It was to replace the snail pace train otherwise called the Lunatic express that was just an eyesore and a drainer for the exchequer. The SGR was constructed to haul containers and transport people quickly obviously to leverage on efficiencies, economy etc. Much is talked of the cost of SGR but mostly it is just politics. Everything has a price but I choose to look at the bigger picture. SGR is a wise investment and it will pay for itself in the long run since it is a long term project.

As much as I appreciate your optimism, you cannot downplay the importance of people who are skeptical about the costs. You and I know how much corrupt our country is, and if such opposition stops we won't have a country by tomorrow.

@samwel agwata Love the constructive arguments on both sides! I have a great feeling about our nation's future if we keep this kind of discourse going

if the European or us company built the railway,it will cost more money and more time。
in fact, there is corruption in China and all around the world, but you must make money although there always be thief

And why does China use Chinese workers for foreign aid? Everyone knows that the cultural knowledge and vocational skills of workers in some African countries have not yet reached the construction requirements. For example, if a railway uses all the local labor force, not only the construction time has doubled, but the cost of funds is also increased. There will be a huge increase, but African countries will also face more severe funding difficulties...

G njoroge
They aren’t fond of people screwing their jobs. Also worth noting that while they brought a good number of their workers from China, 25 000 Kenyans were employed at various capacities

Infrastructure cost in Africa is significantly higher due to you need to import everything and political risk. The cost will be much higher if built by European countries.

I think Chinese companies are still the cheapest contractors African countries can find

Holy shit! Everything in the railway system looks just identical to China here. The only difference is they were operated by Kenyans. LMAO

Since the establishment of the PRC government in 1949, China has been implementing the principle of non-interference in other countries, whether it is free aid to African hospitals and schools, or loans to African countries’ roads, railways or airports...

High-speed rail requires expensive investment and maintenance costs. China's high-speed rail network itself is a loss-making business. It requires government funds to maintain. However, the high-speed rail network has improved the economic development of the entire country. That has changed the game. Just like if a human's body has strong muscles, it needs strong blood vessels and heart. If it has no strong muscles, too strong blood vessels and heart are harmful. It depends on the economy of the entire country. If your country can create much more value by saving time, it is worth building faster railways. If not, high-speed railways are not practical, just a luxury. Africa has potential, and the government must think about how to develop.

Compare this to $1.095 trillion U.S. national debt owns by China. That is what should worry you! And the fact that everything in the US is made from China including your underwear!

Wow. Thanks for the video. Although I consider myself reasonably informed, the images of the trains and the train station still blew me off - for a moment I forgot it was in Africa and thought it was in China. I guess we are all heavily biased by a lot of sextive news reports.
As to the Taxis guy, I think he is also biased in some way too. Intuitions aren't always correct. Serious academic research shows that Chinese companies on average hire 85% to 90% of their workforce from locals. About the no-string attached funding philosophy of China, it's perhaps an unfortunate reality, but I'd like to add two points: 1) The IMF approach, though sounds noble, in reality leads to endless deadlock and stagnation. It's said perfect is the enemy of good. Perhaps this saying applies here. 2) Chinese investments have mechanisms to avoid corruption. For example, Chinese loans very often do not go through the governments of the host countries. They go directly to the companies carrying out the infrastructure projects. This by no means will root out corruption completely, but it certainly helps.

有句话说“完美是好的敌人”(perfect is the enemy of good),也许这句话在这里适用。

I Enjoyed the train ride !! U made me feel more comfortable about taking the train the next time I go to Kenya. It looks more comfortable than Easy Coach ! My ass hurt for days after that trip ! Have fun , and be careful, I’m already looking forward to your next video in Mombasa

Those railway tracks were first put down by cheap Indian and African labour. Indians were brought in by the British from India.(not from the US, lol). Their plight was captured in the movie, "The Ghost and the Darkness" staring Val Kilmer.

We used to take the old train in the 80's, it was like the Orient Express, it was an amazing experience. I remember looking out the window watching the train snake round corners with children running alongside. When you got to Mombasa you felt you really had travelled to a different place as the land slowly transformed with palm tress and white sands. Luckily we had a sleeper, but third class was just benches and must have been a real hardship

I don't know what the driver did in China for 15 years but still has no idea about the basic of Chinese foreign policy: not interfering in other countries internal affairs. If you want China to build the infrastructure in that short period of time and fix the local political problem, you're expecting too much, and from the wrong guy. African should have their own opinion regarding their relationship with China from their own experience, not just blindly copy what the bias western media made up.

Believe in good
There are enough countries that like to pay attention to the affairs of other countries and like to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries. As an economic partner, China does not need to do these things.
Even after a decade, when China becomes the world's largest economy, China will not try to become a new colonizer. They do not like to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, nor do they like to manage people other than the Chinese. Chinese are businessmen. And I don't think Africans want to find them another slave owner. Isn't it the best choice to have an economic partner like China?
