This may sound weird but seeing his multidimensional aquarium brought tears to my eyes. It was such a kind and caring way of design.
I love this guy.
Edited to add: Elon should have contracted Yansong to design his cyber truck ;-)

JamesThomas Yeah, no joke. That thing is hideous.

Yeah the problem is Elon was looking for 100% efficiency and functionality. The chinese guy himself says that these boxy buildings may have been functional and efficient but they are hella ugly, repetitive and blocks out nature. Elon needed something that's repetitive , easy , functional and efficient on resources to build.

@T. B. I think the cyber truck looks beautiful.

He is an actual artist!

Architect are better than an artist because building like that will have tons of technical issues.

Art is purely look. Architect is art + science + function + practicality

exactly me thought....it is so informative... such a great way of thinking

My country is filled with ugly, cheap, "practical" buildings that legitimately make me depressed to go outside. I already have depression as it is, so it's not helping.
So I've been thinking a lot about why architecture doesn't seem to take the human "spirit" into account and how our mood, moral and motivation can be easily affected by our surroundings. We need beautiful and interesting buildings/structures and nature all around us and within our modern cities and neighborhoods just as much as we need them to be practical, and it doesn't have to be a contradiction.
A happy, inspired person is less depressed and more productive. More motivated and compassionate and creative. Our brains need more than just practicality, and I think it should be considered just as crucial, basic and necessary.
The atmosphere surrounding us can change us and the world we live in.
That's why I've been hoping for architects like him to appear (although I still wish for more color as well. I'm sick of white and gray, which my country is full of).
Keep up the good work. I hope you keep designing buildings all around the world and inspire many others after you.

3:30 I used to live near these buildings when I was 7 and was extremely fond of their unique shape. I was so shocked to find out that this was the person who designed them! I really wish more architects design buildings with an emphasis of nature with them, they are truly marvelous!

Make architecture great again. Modern architecture looks like somebody mashed together a bunch of geometric shapes, plastered the building with windows and hoped it would look futuristic. In reality it's just atrocious, architecture form the 19th, 18th, 17th, 16th centuries are a thousand times better then modern abominations.

LandAhoy
And even older building as well. I too prefer old buildings and shops over anything we have today (accept some places where structures like this are still preserved), I understand that they are less sustainable and practical. Especially with today's large and ever growing population and the new alternatives offered by technology. Still, I think they are much lovelier and wish we could be surrounded with colorful and beautiful little buildings like that, made from natural materials (although with the amount necessary today, that would be bad news to nature and the ecosystem, unfortunately).

Huan Bui
You are comparing a regular building to a super expensive building.

MrDQMYNATOR
I got the exact same thaught:
If you look at gothic cathedrals everybody is amazed - but if you look at todays building it feels like backwards evolution in architecture.
However there is one thing that has to be considered:
when the room is round and maybe even the walls are bent: how do we put box shaped furniture in it?
Like: imagine a egg shaped floor... where do you put a box shaped wardrobe?
It can't be placed in any corner since there are no corners... so what is the next step here?
The answer can obviously only be: it needs furniture that fit perfectly to the bent wall.
But this comes with a very high price: first of all you can not move the furniture anymore because it only fits in one place.
So it becomes much less flexible if you want to move furniture around.. or buy new ones.
and 2.)
think of the costs of such building with shapes that have such bent walls and bent furniture:
it will cost SOOOO much more because ever bit needs to custom made...
I bet its more than 10 times the costs! - while at the same time housing less then half number of people inside...
so it becomes some elite uperclass thing...
Next look at his volcano park: imagine beeing a gardener that sits on a lawn mower driving up and down the weird shapes - it would soon drive you crazy I think... - so the challenge here is not just to make it look smooth, round and appealing but also keeping it A) practical B) functional C) structally stable D) efficent (to clean for example) and E) affordable ...
So while his buildnigs sure look fancy - I bet living inside of one is a nightmare.

@MrDQMYNATOR I like to add another thing, if one component of that building is damaged and needs replacement, that component will has to be custom made. And in my experience curvy building has tons of technical issues, especially with water.

Lol, someones been watching too much Paul Joseph Watson's videos.
Only credit you have is that the majority of developers/builders, particularly apartment builders, who fund the architects, only want to maximise their profits. Which is why there are so many cookie-cutter box buildings.

FoamRoll
@MrDQMYNATOR Contextually speaking, cathedrals had access to a lot more resources and funding. It's a church, a place of gathering. What are you comparing a church to?
Also, many European regulations prevent neighbours from building taller; which is why they seem so amazing in their setting.

Great talk!! While looking at those beautifully and thoughtful designed building, surrounding boxes started to look especially ridiculous.
The “dancing” towers prove that you can build both organic, yet urban - for many people per small area. But what I see it requires time and effort. Not just copying one project again and again.
I’m from Kyiv, Ukraine and we have a lot left from Soviet unx invasion. You can google it, it looks terrible! Sometimes parts of the city looks like other... cities. Yeah.
But even new projects are still sometimes repeated throughout the town. I hope that we will change it in the future.
Very inspiring TED talk!

Truly an inspiring talk! I wish all building projects could be done this way, making the buildings fit the landscape instead of forcing the landscape to accommodate the buildings. There are currently several major building projects going on in my city, and instead of trying to blend them into the beautiful surrounding nature, they are blasting away all the rocks, cutting down the trees, and flattening the ground, covering everything with asphalt, gravel and perfectly square tiles. And all the new buildings are identical glass cubes that keep reaching higher and higher, menacingly looming over the tiny passersby like giant monsters. It makes me so sad.

Nice looking. I have a few questions: 1. are they sustainable like nature? 2. are these buildings only for rich (always big capital needed)? These are questions about what his nature means: Is his nature defined by the outlook (nice looking)? Or does his nature include function/sustainability/changing/life..? He started a fish story, so I hope his concept about nature covers the latter. I hope there is a follow-up talk.

Let me partly disagree. I, for instance, live in Kharkov, with standard "boxy" buildings built in Soviet unx, that most commenters would hate. Such natural design is, undisputably, beautiful and great. BUT. Is it a necessity? Is it cheap enough to build, to project? For cities like Kharkov, that suffers from severe financial shortages, is it really number one priority? Why isn't any way to make "boxy buildings" look more natural???

I like The Mad architects Work and the Harbin opera really is a masterpiece, but these are still not fully sustainable buildings, the ambient impact is still big, they still use a huge source of water, electricity and harmful resources to construct this, I hope one day Mr. Yansong's work can be fully sustainable and still preserving the beauty of its design.

Box and rectangular-shaped buildings are commonly used n architecture because they are standard designs but it's also a visual representation of man's attempt to create order and control in nature, which is chaotic and random, so a more nature-inspired building does create a better sense of unity with nature

The reason we don't build buildings like that is because it is too expensive. If we built all our buildings like that in America, half the population would be homeless.
And so I wonder how homeownership works in China. Does anyone know?

Nice sculptures, but unless it is able to create greater profit, it will not be mainstream. It takes money to make buildings, and those with money want their money back.

Al Savery
That's marvelous but I bet there are real engineering innovations behind the scene (like better computer simulation or better building material perhaps) that makes this now possible. It's not that people in the past love and prefer the box-type building but because they are practical (save money) and more importantly they are structurally safe. You don't want to invest millions of dollars in building a building that can collapse and kill a lot of people. What the artist can imagine requires an engineer to make possible. One day you will see a floating city in the sky and you asked why people in the past never thought of that before... Ah, yeah, that's because it's technologically impossible to do it before. Before the artist can be a revolutionary, you need a revolutionary engineer.

Cool. But those designs don't look pedestrian friendly. They look great to visit and explore but how fast can you get from point A to point B if all the streets are squiggly and all the buildings look like hills. Old European cities, where architecture and urban design are built on a human scale, are still the prettiest and best cities in which to live.

Here we have my old dilemma: Do i downvote because i disagree with the speech or dislike the design? - or upvote to thank the uploader for maikng it publicly available? clearly TED did nothing wong...

And they say the Chinese only copy & not creative?? ....another myth western media would have you believe.

People are getting sick of all the contamination; also, are being depressed for all that grey and black cities, we really need more urban architecture inspired by mountains, clouds, and volcanoes!

Some designs seem good in concept phase but at execution turn out to look like tumors on healthy, functional tissue of urban space. Not cool.

Lovely concept however if material does not look earthy and instead shiny like ufo's the intention seems to be lost i.e. continuity with nature. Good luck!

It feels like the laugh is artificial, is not it?

Again Man getting inspiration from what God has created.

I used to be a huge fan of Ted Talks until I found out that they really are not an organization that promotes new ideas . It's a shame that anything that goes against what mainstream science gets dexed. One great example: If people still believe that the pyramids were built by Kufu...They need to do some research on their own. God forbid somebody has evidence to show thats not accurate.

Yea but it's so minimalist and boring though.
No detail just bland shapes.
Architecture died after 1938

Looks like a bunch of drunk fools designed a building. Nature teaches us a lot about design, pyramids mimic mountains in form AND FUNCTION, not this trash. Clouds? not really known for their structural values. When you put form over function you have failed to be an architect.

Finn MacCool
Translation: Let's make modern architecture as weird and tasteless as possible so we can try to pass ourselves off as "innovative".

please explain to me in smaller word so my simple mind can understand such greatness you just put forth
