I disagree. I think you may have a skewed view of them. You are entitled to your opinion, but allow me to retort/clarify. As far as solo missions, many of them did. And yes they were elite in that nobody else could do what they did at the time. Cowardly? No. It took a set of stones to do some of the things they did. Severely dangerous circumstances where they were deep in enemy territory. Often in disguise, as a peasant, as a nobleman, whatever got them close to their target or obxtive. Yes a lot of their dealings were underhanded, as with all spies. A knife in the back from the shadows, a poisoned cup, a fire set as you slept. The only ones they were seen as cowardly by, were the Samurai. Because they were so blinded by total honour and duty, face your enemy openly and front on to the death. The Ninja were not bound by such constraints. That does not mean they were bad people. They were smart. Who is bad in war times anyway? This was Feudal Japan. Much blood was spilled across the entire land for years and years...

One would think Special Ops soldiers would be able to disarm and/or incapacitate any assailant not armed with a firearm and keeping them at some distance.
