I live in South Korea and my biggest shocks were:
-all services are done very quickly (groceries are delivered the next day)
-no one adds milk to their tea or coffee (also barely anyone here drinks tea)
-eating out of the same bowl of soup or stew with friends
-slippers in the bathroom
-90% of bread here is all sweet. Bakeries just sell pastries
-awful driving
-pickled vegetables served alongside most western dishes
-almost no obese people
-room salons of all varieties ( hostess bars where you drink crappy whisky, sing karaoke and have sex with prostitutes)
-rarely every any bar brawls or drunken altercations, people are way more sensible when drunk than we are
-nowhere to buy deodorant... seriously...

Denmark: When you arrive at a big gathering or a party, you shake hands with all the guests, even the ones you don’t know. Sometimes it sucks being the last one to arrive cause there’s so many hands to shake.

I'm not a brit, but the lack of deodorant in Korea threw me for a loop when my 10 day work trip stretched into 30 and my stick ran out. I needed to buy more. I walked all over Lotte trying to find some.

I think the deodorant thing is because Asians naturally sweat way less than other people do I could be wrong and fell for some kind of joke tho

Philippines (Manila).
Obviously there are usually exceptions to some of these points.
Climate:
Oppressive, humid heat almost all the time.
Typhoons, thunderstorms and rain for nearly 5 months in a row during monsoon.
Don't forget about the volcanoes in every direction and earthquakes are possible.
Early mornings and the evenings can be pleasant for sitting outside with a drink but mostly it's just too hot all the time.

People:
Friendlier than the average Brit for sure.
Non-aggressive. Never seen any hoodlum or roadman types here.
If you're white. Prepare to be seen as a walking wallet and for scammers and gold diggers to suddenly appear everywhere.
Most foreigners are retired old white men especially from America and Australia with 19yr old 'girlfriends' who spend their days at the pubs.
My Polish friend visited once, turned on his Tinder and had 100+ matches within an hour.

Place
Huge wealth divide. Seems to be very little between abject poverty stricken slums or guarded gated communities.
The slums are everywhere and hard to deal with if you're not used to seeing such things.
Guns everywhere. Every shop has a guard armed with a rifle and every mall entrance has armed guards frisking you and metal detectors.
Everything is a franchise. Prepare to see every business repeated 3 times in every mall.
Terrible supermarkets. Flies all over the meat, poor hygiene and an overpriced and poor sextion.
For a country which exports so many bananas they keep none of the good ones for themselves.
Vegetables are extremely expensive since they only grow in the highland regions of the country.
Spirits are cheaper but wine is more expensive.
Incompetance in service constantly. If something in your house breaks, forget being able to find anyone who has the skill to fix it.
Cash is king. You'll never be able to spend or give away all the worthless coins you end up with at the end of the day.
Usually fast and convenient food deliveries. Many restaurants to choose from. Much bigger sextions than almost anywhere in the UK.
Indian food in the UK is miles better.
Great Spa, Massage and Salon options at amazing prices.

Transport:
Worst traffic I've experienced anywhere.
Terrible public transport.
Forget walking anywhere. Even if you can stand the heat, footpaths are sketchy, limited and different districts of the city aren't properly connected.
No lane discipline and endless honking from everyone all the time.
Buses rule the road and WILL cut you off.
Motorbikes swerving in and out of lanes with no thought to danger.
Beggars at every red light.
Random obstacles in the road and poor lighting at night if any.
Drunk driving is very common and police typically just take bribes if they catch anyone.
Every car is a Ford SUV or Toyota Vios (small sedan).

Departed00
Vietnam
-Crazy, crazy driving
-the lowest rate of obesity in the world. (i don't remember the last time i saw an overweight person)
-no queuing for anything
-most things need 'coffee money' (bribes) to get done
-almost all police are corrupt
-sitting on the floor to prepare and eat food
-huge fear of the sun and of getting a tan. Almost all cosmetic products are 'whitening'
-an almost hatred of dark skin
-no council tax, road tax, alcohol tax, low prices (i realise how overcharged for everything we are in the UK)
-manners are very American/British
-an acceptance of noise way above that any British person would tolerate
-people sleeping in the office for up to an hour each lunchtime, even if it's super busy. The Vietnamese can sleep anywhere
-bread is sweet and typically very overpriced
-milk is all UHT, fresh milk very rare and expensive
-huge amount of vegetables and fruit with each meal. Very healthy diets
-having an app on my phone where i can literally order anything from anywhere, day or night, delivered by a guy on a bike within 20 mins or so for about 20p. Using the same app to get a car/bike within a minute to almost anywhere. It's like UBER but 1000000x cheaper and better...

fangaas
Netherlands
More bikes than people as you know
Cars drive like snails and always give way
Conversely bicycles never give way and observe no road signs or laws, if you don't move you'll get hit
Hugely techno driven culture, big techno parties all across the city every weekend
Same goes for festivals
Basically no interesting local meals or recipes
Everyone drinks small 25cl beers
Everyone walks infront of you or across you, no giving way
'me first' attitude towards queuing and in general
Big distaste for tourists (in Amsterdam at least)
Extraordinarily expensive for some things like fast food and meat
People have a general distaste for their own language and even dissuade against learning it

Dutch people speaking English or hybrid English/Dutch to each other
Complain more about the weather and avoid the rain more than the English
Basically no homeless (at least visible)
Don't understand sarcasm
Direct to the point of causing offense, and totally remorseless about it
Very cheap and all about supermarket discounts
Huge cinema fans
Drink their coffee at home, don't bother with cafés so much
Huge cheesey local music culture for 'schlager' music
Entire country sinking into the earth and built on sand, constant maintenance needed and roads resurfaced yearly sometimes or else they collapse from the moving sand (not all areas are like this but a great amount)
All Amsterdam buildings are built on extremely tall wooden sticks called Piles (very surreal and worth checking out)
Big cheese producers, but extreme lack of cheese variety, mostly Edam style
Anglophiles and very into UK royal family (this really surprised me)
Great work life balance, not so much workaholics
I could continue! Also i see some of these aren't so much culture shock-ey but more interesting, all just my own opinions.

lizzywbu
Japan
It is extremely difficult to find public waste bins, yet you will struggle to find litter on the streets.
If you have tattoos, keep them hidden. Tattoos are strongly lixed to gang culture and some people will actively avoid you if you are seen to have them.
Don't eat the eggs, seriously. They are very likely to make you ill if you aren't used to them.
All bread is very sweet, tastes like Brioche. The Japanese love to fill bread with different flavours.
Corner shops or Combini as they are called in Japan, sell amazing food. Its always made fresh that day and is on the level of British restaurant food.
Fruit and vegetables are extremely expensive. For example, I once saw a single apple for sale for 8000 Yen, which is about £50.
Buying ingredients and cooking for yourself is much more expensive that it is in Britain. This is typically why you see most people go out to eat. The Japanese also see dinner as a time to socialise.
The biggest surprise was the way Westerners are viewed. There is a kind of xenophobia/ignorance in that respect. But otherwise, mostJapanese people are extremely polite and courteous.

paisleypark_
Moved from rural Scotland to Las Vegas US fairly recently.
Essentially everything is a culture shock especially moving from such a small place, the village I grew up in had less than 1000 people to a giant city.
Seeing casinos everywhere. Of course it's a Vegas speciality, but even supermarkets have gambling sections here. Even McCarran Airports has to have fruit machines right up until the gates.
Guns everywhere will never not be weird to me. You can just casually (hyperbolic of course but they're in Walmart) get them during your weekly grocery shop.
No public transportation or the ability to walk everywhere. This is a regional thing but my poor grandad keeps on asking if we're walking distance from a pub and I have to tell him we're not walking distance from anything. Buses are uncommon as well.
The country bumpkin in me wants me to put this one but people can be really mean. Meaner than I've ever experienced in the UK, even when I went to London or Glasgow. I've had some really shitty people already. My in laws tell me I need to harden up.
People comment on my accent way more. I have the ability to use my normal Scottish doric one and a Queens English one as I was raised in Cambridge. I use whichever one depending on the others ability to understand like I use the QE for people who don't have English as their first language for example.
Everything shocked me tbh and I just want a cuppa and some rain now. I moved during summer and 47° was unbareable and ill never complain about the UK summer ever again.

culturedindividual
When I lived in Paris, even though it's metropolitan, they had a strong sense and regard of their French culture. Unlike other countries, where they're excited to just experience UK nationals - there, they were proud of their French. So they would respect you if you speak French to them, and they hear your English accent, rather than you just asking them "can you speak English?".
From my experience, it's more classist and racist than the UK, and had overbearing bureaucracy. It tooks ages to open up a bank account there, even when the UK was in the EU. This bureaucracy makes it harder for immigrants to climb socioeconomically. So there's a lot of immigrants hanging around stations and selling things. As a black guy, I'm sure some people saw me as an African immigrant rather than a "British expat", and people were wary of me on the metros. The day I got back to London, and sat on the tube, a woman just came and sat in front of me and put her bag down on the floor. That wouldn't really happen in Paris.
University in Paris was also more like sixth form, rather than the American-esque escapade we have here. Most students still lived at home, and commuted, which was exemplified by the accommodations costs in Paris. It was mostly international students in the university halls.

Darkondrago
Switzerland
Having to use a designated bin bag for general waste that was almost like £1 a bag
Everything being so expensive, mind, I was studying abroad and didn’t have a wage coming in. Meat was the worst offender and I had to live half-veggie while I was there
Preference of UHT milk which took me a while to get used to
I found customer assistants to be cold and not as friendly as in the UK
Train tickets costing an absolute bomb to go only like an hour
There is a bike tax on public transport and you have to get a pass to bring one on -Bureaucracy was slow and I kept getting bounced from place to place because everyone said different things and no one really knew where to send me to register as a foreigner
Had to pay more to get online banking and the only way I could get past 2FA was by using a physical calculator that gave me a pin every time I wanted to log in
I couldn’t ever eat out because it was too expensive. McDonald’s costs about double the UK price for a meal and my friend said a pizza set her back about £17 in a restaurant
They had an English section in their Coop supermarket, but prices were ridiculous

Witty_G_22
China:
Besides some of the more obvious:
· everyone drinking hot water - and being judged (more so by older people) for drinking cold water. I assume it’s a hang over from when water was boiled for safety.
· women showing so much leg, but no cleavage. Somehow it seems to be seen as distasteful to wear a low top, but wearing tiny skirts is absolutely normal and very common place. I would say this is a reverse of the U.K. (excluding on a night out, British women are more likely to wear a slightly low top than a very high skirt).
· As a guest at someone’s house, if you don’t like something don’t finish it. I once struggled through a pig’s ear out of British politeness and got given 2 more, which I also dutifully choked down before standing up for myself.
· also as a house guest (especially family) say you are full when you’ve still got lots of room left in your belly. Hosts can be insistent that you eat more. I frequently made the mistake of stuffing my face with delicious food to the point of bursting before voicing that I was full, only to be offered not just a wafer thin mint, but insistently told to eat another 2000 calories of food.
· Everyone has a smart phone in the big cities - not just the young. 90 year olds sit at the dinner table on their smartphones. No body in my immediate family over the age of 35 has one, so maybe we’re just a poor example.
· state school not starting till 7 years old.
· not saying please and thank you all the time to family/friends because it’s just inferred by you being their family/friend. Makes perfect sense, but I still can’t just say “give me a cup of coffee” to someone
· except for fancy restaurants, it’s perfectly acceptable to go buy drinks or even snacks at the corner store to enjoy with your meal.

ColourScientist
Denmark.
Everyone speaks English, perfectly. They encourage you to learn Danish (lessons are free) but want to talk English with you.
Fantastic cycling infrastructure, so everyone cycles.
Cars MUST give way to bicycles. It’s a strange thing to get used to. I feel much safer riding.
They drink a lot. There are seasonal beers, super tasty. Stay away from the schnapps, it’s a trap.
Nudity. They’re very liberal and open with that one at the beaches.
Healthcare is superb. I was brought up thinking the NHS was the best in the world, unfortunately I can now really see the cuts and hardships they’re facing.
Very straight to the point.
Drive 5 minutes out of a city and you’re in the middle of nowhere
Everything is more expensive but in comparison to wages, it’s about the same.
Food is incredibly fresh and doesn’t last. Buy it and eat it in a day or two .
Anything official is ran very smoothly. Any interaction with the government is a breeze. It’s unexpected.
Danes absolutely do not and will not commute. 20 minute drive is a shock to them (it’s even tax deductible)
Childcare is SO cheap (75% subsidised)
Pastries everywhere. For everything.
If you lose your job, don’t worry. You get 100% of your pay for a year or until you find other employment.
It’s a wonderful place to live though. Very similar in many aspects, no real culture shock.
