World’s worst healthcare, terrible corruption, racism - And then there are those crazy gun laws! Why would you go there?

If you're middle class, my experience is that life in Canada is slightly better. If you're poor, life in Canada is significantly better. I’m American (though now an expat), but have spent a lot of time in Canada, including a stint working there for more than one year, so I feel qualified to comment. There are a lot of pluses for Canada, and probably willbe more as time goes on and the US continues its slow decline. There is less crime in Canada, there’s of course good quality healthcare that doesn’t leave you bankrupt. Canadians are known for being friendly, and I’d agree that overall that’s true - although I believe most Americans are, too. The beer in Canada is stronger, often 7%, so bonus points for that! Canada often lacks solid infrastructure, such as roads, when you get outside the major cities. No surprise there, as it’s an enormous country with a relatively small population to fund the needed development. The major drawbacks to Canada really are the winters - no surprise - and taxes. When I was working there, a few of us sitting at a table one night calculated that the average Canadian spends 50% or more of his/her salary in taxes when you figure income tax, healthcare deduction, PST, GST, excise taxes for gas, etc. But at least you see something for what you pay in. My opinion is that, especially with the US becoming more difficult to migrate to (and, let’s be honest, less DESIRABLE to migrate to), Canada, with a comparable lifestyle, will look better and better to many people .

I’ve lived in both places. The one thing I noticed most about Canada is that it’s actually safe to cross the street. Well, in Nova Scotia anyway. I can’t speak for other parts. What I learned was that they crack down extremely hard on people who break the rules of the road which means drivers tend to behave much better than any area of the United States I have ever been. It was so good that I got used to trusting that when the light is green I can cross and as a result almost got run down by a red light runner in the US later on.
So if you walk or bike Canada is substantially safer and has a more comfortable atmosphere, but if you drive and make mistakes or like to speed it won’t be as nice.
As far as health insurance goes, it is based on legal residency rather than citizenship so a Canadian living abroad doesn’t have the same protections as a foreigner living in the province.

I’ve lived in both places. There are plenty of things that Canada doesn’t do well, and plenty of things that it couldn’t do as well the USA because it doesn’t have the scale the USA does. I think that for most people, the dramatically lower crime rates, and especially the dramatically lower likelihood of being fatally shot, together with universal effectively free access to healthcare, removes the kind of anxiety that pervades American society but is largely absent in Canada.

On the “Happiness” index, Canada is in the Top 10. The USA falls between 13 & 15 depending on which year you look at.

Besides healthcare which we all like here in Canada, the people here are much nicer. If a cop stops you, there a almost no chance he will shoot you because he thinks you own a gun. Where I live in Toronto, you can walk the streets at 2 AM and not worry about getting mugged. The biggest drawback is the weather but otherwise I'd rather live here then the USA, when I get to cold I'll come down to Florida and vacation.

I don’t know if Canadians are actually nicer than Americans. I’ve spent extended stays in both countries. Americans always striked me as nicer than Canadians. They would strike random conversations more frequently. Random strangers made me feel welcome and wanted to be friends with me. Canadians, on the other hand didn’t talk to strangers. They were a bit cliquey and sometimes shunned me and my buddies for having Asperger’s or ADHD. But then again, the only places in Canada I’ve been to are in Southern Ontario (especially the GTA) so I could be wrong. Maybe people in BC or the Maritimes would be much friendlier. Who knows

If you are poor or middle class (i.e. - regular folk) - Canada definitely provides a higher quality of life. I speak as a Canadian who has lived in 4 other countries, has an American partner and many American, US-based colleagues. The lines between classes is more blurred and movement is possible. My mother grew up extremely poor and went on to become a teacher, get a Masters degree and retired a principal - my parents now own two homes and have a great retirement.
The per capita rate of post-secondary education in my city is among the highest in the world (Ottawa, 59%). We don’t worry about going bankrupt to pay medical bills, there is parental leave for new parents, and the murder rate and overall violence level is relatively low for the population. In our last election, 69% of eligible voters went to the polls.
Some anecdotes: an American friend of mine from Boston once remarked that ‘people seem more relaxed in Canada’. My partner says that drivers are ‘too polite’ and let people into lanes too often.
Let’s be clear: Canada is not nearly as exciting as the US. We don’t have the weather, nor the same amount of innovation or billionaires. What we have is higher levels of education, health and happiness and a lifestyle that embraces the outdoors and the collective good.

I moved to Toronto Canada since 2006. the life quality is better as long as you already have a job and your documents are done. Healthcare is one of the main reason Canada beats USA only as long you have the OHIP card.
Each country is worth it depending on what are you doing. for people gathering improve their education and quality of life Canada is nice.
However, for those gathering being entrepreneurs and build their own business the best place is US.

I just wrote a comment about gun crimes in the two countries but wanted to add one about the medical issues as well. During my 30 years here in the US I had occasion around 15 years ago to return to Canada for about 1 1/2 years. During that time I decided to have the Pap and Mammogram tests done so went looking for a doctor. Everyone I called refused to see me, stating that “the doctor is not taking any new patients”. I finally got a reference from a friend and that got me in to see her doctor. When I arrived on time for my appointment, I expected to see her waiting room full of patients, as had always been the case when I lived in Canada previously, but there was only one other person, waiting, as it turned out, for a different doctor. I still had to wait for about a half hour. The appointment turned out to last no more than 15 minutes, as of course she had only to take a sample and to give me a referral to a Mammo clinic. Of course she offered no explanation or apology and her dismissive attitude made me feel like I was an imposition, From my earlier years in Canada, I do remember commonly waiting for up to 1 1/2 hours each time I needed to see a doctor for a birth control prescxtion; I chose a new doctor each time, but this scenario was the always the same. I do believe there’s a strain put on the system in Canada as many people will run to the doctor for the slightest ailment (I remember my own sister taking her kids in when they “had a sniffle”.) Just the inevitable downside to having virtually free health care, I suppose.

During that time I decided to have the Pap and Mammogram tests done so went looking for a doctor. Everyone I called refused to see me, stating that “the doctor is not taking any new patients”. I finally got a reference from a friend and that got me in to see her doctor. When I arrived on time for my appointment, I expected to see her waiting room full of patients, as had always been the case when I lived in Canada previously, but there was only one other person, waiting, as it turned out, for a different doctor. I still had to wait for about a half hour. The appointment turned out to last no more than 15 minutes, as of course she had only to take a sample and to give me a referral to a Mammo clinic. Of course she offered no explanation or apology and her dismissive attitude made me feel like I was an imposition, From my earlier years in Canada, I do remember commonly waiting for up to 1 1/2 hours each time I needed to see a doctor for a birth control prescxtion; I chose a new doctor each time, but this scenario was the always the same. I do believe there’s a strain put on the system in Canada as many people will run to the doctor for the slightest ailment (I remember my own sister taking her kids in when they “had a sniffle”.) Just the inevitable downside to having virtually free health care, I suppose.

I’m a Canadian ex-pat who has been living in Southern California for the past 30 years so I haven’t been really clued into this issue of guns and violence in Canada as opposed to the US, therefore the comments on this forum are very interesting. I’ve long thought that perhaps the big difference, statistics aside, is the gun mentality between the two countries. I left Canada at age 40 and in all my years there I never experienced one incident involving guns; in fact, I don’t recall even hearing anyone talk about owning a gun except for purposes of hunting. Here in the US I live in a nice middle-class neighborhood. A year after I moved here a new neighbor moved in next door. It wasn’t long before she started letting her 2 dogs run loose, which led to them attacking one of my cats. She refused to take any responsibility, even for keeping them in her yard. Long story short, this led to more incidents, during one of which I chased her dogs off my property with a few handfuls of gravel. She heard the commotion, came storming over, and screamed at me that she “had shot one person already and did I want her to shoot me too”. I had heard rumors that she had indeed shot her ex-boyfriend and spent time in prison for that, so took her threat seriously. I learned later from both the Animal Control Officer and a City Code Enforcement Officer that she had likewise threatened to shoot them.
Since the killing of Trayvon Martin (please Google if you’re not familiar), I’ve become more conscious of the fact that there are people like George Zimmerman everywhere; I’m not paranoid nor afraid to go into a WalMart store, but I am prepared to not engage with anyone in any way that could spark an incident where I could be the next victim.
I hear about so many incidents where something this minor leads to people being shot. I believe that living in a society where so many average citizens own guns, it can become a case of casual familiarity breeding an attitude where the first reaction of people to any altercation is to settle issues with their guns. I have the impression that casual gun ownership is not nearly as prent in Canada and would welcome any response that Canadian readers can offer on this point.

I’ve lived in many places in both the US and Canada. Everywhere I’ve lived, I’ve known people who were very unhappy and who blamed their unhappiness on the place where they lived. I’d say that there’s so much more to life than geography that location is unlikely to be a real determinant.

She sees too many people who wait until they are stage 4 because they just can't afford treatment, so they leave it until it's too late. Not only that but Canadian healthcare costs 50% less than the US (cost as a % of GDP)
Because the Canadian gov’t pays our health insurance, they have a vested interest in keeping us HEALTHY. That's why products that are unhealthy (cigs, liquor, gas, fast food) are taxed more heavily while healthy things (sports, fresh food, etc) are subsidised or have tax deductions.
Because of this, 24% of Canadians are obese, compared to 36% of Americans.
Canadians live an average of 3 years longer than Americans
We have a lower infant mortality rate
Another by-product of free healthcare is that it makes it more advantageous for companies to open businesses in Canada; no business need include healthcare in their benefit packages.

The number of wealthy politicians are far lower than in the US. Most Canadian politicians are lawyers, doctors, teachers, journalists, farmers, tradesmen, etc. Nearly 0 millionaires.

My wife spent seven years studying in the United States. If I never return there I’ll be happy. once you’ve left the United States for another developed country, namely the U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or Northern Europe, you get a far better vision of what a first world nation is supposed to be. America lags in nearly every social metric, has a theistic policy push, mass violence, imperialism, incarceration, and blah blah blah. The list goes on. It’s not even the land of opportunity as advertised. Nearly every developed nation has better upward social mobility. Happiness index is higher in all.

Canada is the better choice if you qualify to move to either though. We have a social safety net. We have less overt racism. We are more welcoming of immigrants. Excluding Toronto and and Vancouver, we have a reasonable cost of housing and the rest of the cost of living isn’t that far off of what the US has.
