I never knew white rice was supposed to be so dangerously unhealthy - until I moved to the States.
You see, I have been eating white rice ever since I was a mewling babe.
And there have been many days in my life where I’ve eaten white rice THREE times a day - breakfast, lunch, AND dinner.
And I prefer the short grain varieties, which I was constantly told - or was that lectured on - is the most unhealthy variety out there.

According to them, due to the all this white rice I was eating, I should be:
(1) The walking, living, and breathing definition of someone suffering from Arsenic Poisoning.
(2) A lifelong diabetic.
(3) Obese or at least someone with a gut that threatens to touch the pavement. “It’s just like eating sugar!”

It just confused me because:

Clean bill of health every time - no mention of Arsenic Poisoning yet.

I mean, with the last point, my sister eats a lot more rice than I do.
I’m going to reveal one of her eating habits.
She sometimes scoops white rice - straight from the rice cooker! - and dumps it into the soup/broth - and eats the rice and broth at the SAME time. And that’s AFTER she’s done with the main meal - where she’s already eaten white rice!
And she’s an East Asian woman standing at 172 cm and her weight fluctuates between 51–53 kg.
There was a moment in my handful of years in the States that I will always remember, due in no small part to the irony present.

While white rice is not as nutritious as less-processed rice, it can certainly be a healthful part of a good diet. It’s not as if white rice has no nutrients at all!
I grew up in Japan and Taiwan (military brat, whose parents insisted on living among native folk rather than Americans), and ate rice (mostly white) for at least two meals a day.
When people denigrate white rice, they seem to forget (or just don’t know) that the rice is used as a vehicle for other aspects of the meal: vegetables, fish, meat, sauces, and condiments. Together, all of these create quite a bit of balance in the daily diet of indigenous rice-eaters.

Nowadays, I choose brown rice because it’s widely available, and often cook more obscure varieties as well. I’m also trying to get as big a bang for my nutritional buck as I can. Rice is perhaps the most common staple food in the world and feeds more than half of the world's population. It is the second most cultivated crop after maize (maize). There are about 40,000 species of rice and they are grown on all continents except Antarctica. It is a source of instant energy and an outstanding source of Vitamin B1. Despite being a staple in many cuisines, many people are now choosing to avoid a diet that consists primarily of rice because of the kilograms it can add to their stomach. However, it would not be ideal to eliminate rice consumption solely based on this controversial assumption. Let's dive a little deeper into the details and take a look at some of its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages
1. Source of Energy: Rice is rich in simple carbohydrates that are easily digested and converted into energy unlike complex carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are essential for efficient metabolic activities that increase energy levels.

3. Low Sodium Levels: Being low in sodium, rice does not exacerbate high blood pressure and excessive stress. Sodium puts pressure on the arteries and veins, limiting blood flow and increasing stress on the cardiovascular system.
Moreover, whole grain rice like brown rice is rich in insoluble fiber and can protect the body from the growth of cancerous cells, especially against bowel cancer. It is also said to contain nutrients that cause the growth of neurotransmitters which reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

Defects
1. Simple carbohydrates: 100 grams of white rice equals 86 grams of sugar. Despite being a great source of energy, simple carbohydrates are the bad type of carbohydrate and are known to raise blood sugar and lead to overeating and obesity.
2. Digestive problems: White rice starch is very viscous and difficult to digest. Also, the fiber content is very low and does not facilitate proper cleaning of the intestines.
3. Over-processing and polishing: Over-processing removes about 90% of the rice's nutrition making it less susceptible to oxidation and easier to store for longer periods. White rice is simply rich in empty calories and an excessive intake of it can lead to chronic diseases.
Many people give up rice and replace it with wheat. This should not be the ideal approach as it reduces the intake of amino acids and B vitamins.

White rice is fine, and it has been for the roughly 10,000 years it’s been cultivated. White rice — just like maize, wheat, red meat, chicken eggs, etc. — becomes a problem when it’s served in American size portions over long periods of time.
American portions are the problem (if you’re not a day laborer or elite endurance athlete). I run into this whenever I travel abroad. My first reaction to my first meal is always “This it?”. Then when I’m done, I’m like “That was enough”.

Almost anything is unhealthy if you eat enough of it.
White rice is a staple food in many nations. However those same nations have other foods that are eaten with the white rice.
Do a search for “ekiben bento”, which are special bento meals sold on specific train routes in Japan. You’ll find a reasonable serving of rice or, dishes made with rice, in those meals. You’ll also likely find some fish, nicely prepared vegetables and perhaps a few things beyond your experience to recognize. One of those is a pretty substantial meal in Japan.
While the rice is often viewed as ‘the meal,’ many of these cultures will also serve multiple small dishes that provide various nutrients.
Sure, there are healthier things to eat than a bowl full of white rice. But then, there are far worse. Pick up a bacon-cheese-triple burger meal from just about any fast food joint and figure out how much fat and sugar you are taking in.

Cheeseburgers are a staple food for more that 5% of the world’s population; but are cheeseburgers really healthy?
One question makes as much sense as another. There is nothing unhealthy about white rice. It would not be a good choice to be 100% of your intake; but rice eating populations also add other vegetables, fish, fruit, and other sources of fiber. Judging from the population, it seems to work. Rice is fine if that’s what you grow … few farm products are a complete package.
Other countries have a climate that grows other grains like wheat, corn, oats, beans, etc. They provide a good source of carbohydrates and protein. Pick any single fruit, vegetable, etc at the exclusion of others and you run risks. Getting your nutritional information from somebody’s blog is a greater risk.

Alan Waller, I pay attention to details; I think a lot; and I read a lot.
It’s not the rice, it’s what you’re eating with it. In the project where I was working in southern India, with local ladies cooking traditional food, they didn’t consider a meal to be a meal unless it contained ingredients from twenty different plants. So we were getting a wide range of vitamins and trace elements in our food.
However, the Indian government made highly subsidized white rice available to the villagers for almost nothing. Poor people have usually had poor access to education and they aren’t aware of vitamins and such. They are not eating to get balanced nourishment, they are eating to get unhungry. White rice eaten without vegetables will do that for you, but you are likely to become obese.

While on the project, I had a posterior vitreous detachment like most people of my age, but mine caused interior bleeding in the eye and my colleagues took me to the local subsidiary hospital (which “only” served 2.1 million people!) to have it looked at. You cannot give undereducated people white rice almost for nothing, unless you make sure they know what they need to eat together with it.

White rice is often unfairly criticized and can serve as a better alternative to brown rice in some situations. For instance, women going through pregnancy may benefit from the extra folate found in enriched white rice.
Additionally, people on a low-fiber diet and adults experiencing nausea or heartburn may find that white rice is easier to digest and does not trigger uncomfortable symptoms.
However, brown rice is still the better option for most. It contains a wider variety of vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids and plant-based compounds. It also has a lower glycemic index, which means its carbs are more slowly converted into blood sugar, making it more ideal for people with diabetes or prediabetes. That said, it’s perfectly fine to enjoy white rice in moderation without feeling guilty.
Though white rice is more processed, it’s not necessarily bad. Most white rice in the US is enriched with vitamins like folate to improve its nutritional value. Additionally, its low fiber content may help with digestive issues. However, brown rice is ultimately healthier and more nutritious. Not to mention, studies have shown that brown rice is better for diabetes, heart disease and weight maintenance.

This is a great answer. And of course the right one obxtively and scientifically. Unfortunately, Americans have a problem with orthorexia (and a lot of Europe is catching up on this). They think of food as potential poison to be avoided, rather than the sustenance keeping you alive that it actually is.
Rice feeds a huge percentage of the world as a staple item. And not just in Asia. Ironically, those countries that consume it most almost all have less obesity than the others.

The idea that a food is healthy/unhealthy is a ridiculous misunderstanding of how our bodies work. There is no one food that can make you healthy just by eating it. There is no such thing as “healthy” food. The only difference between white rice and brown rice is a bit of fiber and a few trace minerals, both of which can be easily ingested via other foods. And white rice is actually higher in some other nutrients than brown. Also, if you’re dissecting fine points, you could point out that brown rice also contains some “anti-nutrients” that white rice doesn’t. (HT: Jeff Sturm). The point is that a healthy diet comes from variety, and foods like rice (either white or brown) are not poison, and can be excellent parts of a varied, balanced lifestyle. Making one poison and the other magic is wrong-headed.
The white vs. brown rice argument is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard, and is totally the product of food fear-mongering, poor science communication, and the efforts of a few people to sell their own diet books or products.

I simply cannot imagine thinking of one’s food as a collection of chemicals, both necessary and/or poison. What a horrible way to live.
I think in terms of food being in season, taste, color, etc. I eat lots of rice: white, brown, black, red, and green. Long grain and short. I choose for the dish I’m preparing. (I also eat pasta. Frequently.)
At age 74, my BMI is still under 19. I eat whatever I want; always have. Not only am I healthy, but so is my husband, who has been eating my cooking for three decades. (His BMI is higher than mine, but still normal range.)
I am American, born and reared. I refuse categorically to stop enjoying delicious food.

You’re clearly doing it correctly. I would upvote this more than once, if that were possible. Variety in your diet is the healthiest thing you can do (and in most cases the most enjoyable as well).
The added benefit of eating the way you do is removing the stress of worrying about it all the time. That has a much more significant effect on health outcomes than any of the other things.

That’s an excellent point. The oversimplification and demonization/exaltation of specific foods in general is an issue with how most people tend to look at food today. Overall, we’d do better to add foods to our diets rather than eliminate them, since there are many ways to get the nutrients we need, and no magic bullets. Food is what keeps us alive more than what kills us, and variety and moderation are more useful than good/bad mantras. Either kind of rice can be part of a healthy lifestyle as long as there is appropriate variety in the other things being eaten. And anything lacking in white rice can easily be obtained in other foods.

From elementary to high school, the cafeteria staff would always, and I mean always mix a little brown rice with the white, presumably under the impression doing so would be healthier.
I don’t mind brown rice all that much, and will occasionally opt for it, but there nothing I hate more than brown/white mixed. Go big or go home!

I'm Brazilian. Rice and beans is a staple of Brazilian diet. Almost every Brazilian eats a great portion of white rice twice a day. It's part of our tradition as far as food is concerned. Brazilian have been eating rice and beans with meat twice a day for centuries. Only very recently have the people become overweight, as a consequence of the introduction of fast food, I. e. American food in our culture.
If you get a 1950s picture of a crowded Copacabana beach, you see a sea of thin people.
My father was a doctor, as was my grandfather. They both were very concerned about what we ate, and made a point about our family having a healthy diet. However, they never banned rice and beans from our table, never mentioned that rice was unhealthy. I understand that high quantities of whatever you eat are detrimental to your health. Eat just a small portion and you'll be healthy.

One of the things that amazes me is that in America the portions are huge. Even the plates, the cups and glasses are bigger. When I was a child, I used to buy popcorn before getting into the theatre to see a film. It came in a very small paper bag. I don't recall feelings like having a second one. I felt satisfied. Nowadays, popcorn comes in a bucket. Popcorn, I reckon is not unhealthy, especially if you eat it once a week. But a bucket of popcorn surely can't be healthy.
By the way, I take my check-up exams every year. I'm not diabetic, and I am very healthy. I eat a scoop of white rice everyday at lunch.

When I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes I was referred to a nutritionist, who gave me a mnemonic: avoid the whites: white flour, white sugar, salt, white potatoes, and white rice. All these foods (save for salt) have a high glycemic index, which makes them inadvisable for diabetics. This gets translated into popular culture as bad for everyone, which may not be the case. If you aren't diabetic, a reasonable portion of white rice might not be a problem.

The reason people are diabetic in the first place is high-glycemic foods are EVERYWHERE in the American diet. Sugar, potatoes, and corn products are inescapable if you eat processed foods regularly. In Asian cuisine these aren’t really prent, so the white rice doesn’t cause much harm.

It’s a marketing issue compounded by people looking at the nutritional value of rice alone without taking into consideration what rice is eaten with, and the fact that not everything we eat is fully absorbed.
The Asian diet is high veg. Much of the needed nutrients will be through the accompanying vegetables. That’s also why magnesium deficiency (generally considered the 2nd highest mineral deficiency) is much lower amongst Asians. Anyway, frankly speaking, most of us are already eating too much already.
White rice is better absorbed. TCM treatises are full of warnings not to eat too much hard to digest grains (eg brown rice, wheat and oats), especially for young kids and older adults. Parents and healthcare staff can tell you all the wonders of indigestion and fecal impaction (shall not attach photos).

Southeast Asian countries eat rice everyday and at least 2–3 times a day but they have lower obesity rates than many non-rice eating countries. The demon is not the rice per se. What is important is balanced nutrition, portion control as well as physical activities and just an over all healthy lifestyle. Also, asians normally eat rice with soup, protein and a lot of vegetable side dishes. And our portions are not huge! During my last visit to the US, I thought their single serving looked like a family serving that could feed 3–4 people! We just have to be careful not to eat a whole mountain of rice the same way we should not eat a whole tub of ice cream or an entire tray of French fries and a whole giant pizza; anything in excess is not good.

Perhaps I'm wrong but it seems to be a particularly American thing. I've never known Italian and Spanish people to avoid rice. I certainly ate rice more often in China, sometimes three times a day. I also grew up eating the stuff fairly often, though usually prepared in a different way — for instance my dad made curries, and mum and auntie made “Spanish" rice with garlic cooked into it.

My female relatives average between 55 and 70 kg for the most part. Bear in mind I'm very short by my family's standards at 1.65 m — my mother was 70 kg but she was also 1.8 m tall. She was typically French in that she ate and enjoyed rich food, but in small quantities. I think that could be the key — because if you go to fake Chinese eateries like Panda Express or fake Italian places like Olive Garden you get a carb mountain. Those who eat rice or pasta daily are most likely eating a fraction of that amount.*
In fact I experienced the carb avoidance thing for the first time in America — told off for eating pasta in California too!
