NEVER TAKE DRUGS!！！I'm a Chinese police. We once arrested 13 foreign junkies in a bar in May this year. Most of them took marijuana, and some took others. They were from 9 counties, so my colleagues joked that we'd caught a bunch of “the Eight-Power Allied Forces”, and defeated a new “The Opium War” tonight.When I announced that they would be remanded in custody for 15 days, all of them were breaking down, repeatedly complaining that marijuana is legal in many countries, and some even claimed that marijuana can prevent cancer. My English is not so good, so I didn’t argue with them ，but just simply said “This is China！law is law”！And, this was not THE END. Few days before the 15-day detention periods, I went to them again and announced that they would be deported from China, and were prohibited from entering china within 5 years. Two of them, one is from Luxembourg and another is from Portugal, were arrested by the punishment, for they were the organizers.
Most of those people had been living a stable life in China for a long time, doing business, studying, or teaching as foreign teachers, ect.but they nearly lost everything they earned in China, just because they smoked some marijuana, which they thought to be “legal”.So, I think that the drug control is very severe in China. (＾∀＾)ﾉｼWhat should you NOT do when you visit China? Well, My suggestion is NEVER TAKE DRUGS! ╮(￣⊿￣)╭

I still remember the Prime Minister of Great Britain trying to save his life. But China still maintained their original judgment.On December 21, 2009, the Supreme People's Court of China approved the death sentence of Akmal, a 53-year-old British drug dealer. According to Chinese laws, trafficking heroin and other drugs over 50 grams is punishable by 15 years imprisonment or death.Did you read that? Only 50 grams!In addition, marijuana and laughing gas are also considered illegal drugs in China. China already has quite a record of executing foreign drug dealers.Don't think you can get away with it for just packing a few drugs for your own usage. The court doesn't care: if you carry drugs with you over a certain amount (a small amount), you are punishable by death. You might get yourself killed if you dare try. And don't expect your government to save you. The governments of those executed foreign drug dealers did plead for mercy from Chinese government. Didn't work....

I currently live in China. There are a few things that visitors or newcomers should watch out for:
Don't wear shoes inside someone else's house if there are lots of shoes at the entrance.If there’s a bin beside a toilet with used toilet paper in it, discard toilet paper there — not in the toilet or the result will be clogged pipes. (This is not an issue in hotels or new apartments. It is mainly in rural areas)Don't take drugs or carry a gun in China. If you are lucky, they will deport you. If you are unlucky you will go to jail.Don't tip unless you really, really want to or if you are at a high-end hotel or restaurant. Staff will generally be confused and run after you with the change.Don't be an ignorant tourist. Most travel sites and guides contain a list of common scams. China is safe (unless you are driving, walking near people who are driving, or trying to breathe anywhere near a city) but there are lots of scams like the art student scam, the tea house scam, etc.
我目前住在中国，访客或第一次来中国的应注意以下几点：

I went to Beijing, China with my wife in the winter of 2012.Don’t under estimate Beijing’s winter. Especially if you are from a warmer place, like me. It’s killing.Don’t buy from hawkers and don’t take a rickshaw tour, they are scammers. They will say “san” (“three”) in the beginning, then will charge you “san bai” (“three hunderds”) when you’re finished. If you need a tour, book it from your hotel instead, they will very gladly help you.Don’t forget to prepare your hotel’s address in text, either on your phone or on a paper. If you don’t have it, ask your hotel to write them for you. From my experience, the hotels in Beijing were very very helpful.Don’t try to communicate verbally with the locals. No matter how good you try to pronunciate the latinized text in your dictionary, they wouldn’t understand your blabbers. Prepare some card with basic text instead. Their literacy rate are almost 100%.Don’t ever think about drugs. Though scams are everywhere, China is a very safe place and the people are friendly and physical violence - AFAIK - are very low, but their law on drugs will kill you. Literally.Don’t wear sandals or high heels if you are planning to visit historical places (Forbidden City, Temple of Heavenly Harmony, Emperor’s Tomb, Great Wall, etc). They are of very massive size of lands, you’ll do a lot of walk. Wear sport shoes would be best.Don’t cross the road carelessly though the light is green for you.Don’t forget to bring your toilet paper with you to be used when you have to go to public toilet.

China is a country everyone should visit at least once in their lives. Its a large country with diverse customs and ways of life. However,these are a few things you should absolutely avoid in China.1. Avoid drugs and any violence. China is a very safe country compared to the U.S. and most other countries. You can walk out at 1 a.m on the streets and never feel endangered. However, the government is very strict on drugs. If you get caught you might rot in jail if you are lucky or face the death penalty. 2. Avoid sensitive political topics. China being a communist nation have a dislike for discussing political issues especially among foreigners. In some cases you might be seen as a spy. The government is working very hard to protect China culture from being swallowed up by modernization and western civilization.3. China has a very conservative culture. There's a lot of things you might find strange when you visit the country for the first time. Just accept their culture the way it is and please never try to make fun of it. Like they say, Chinese have their way of doing things, so respect it.4. Try as much as you can to learn some mandarin. English is not a second language in China as it is in most other countries. So don't expect to find many English speakers, moreover do not laugh at someone trying to speak English with wrong grammar. Try as much to be understanding and appreciative.5.Never buy anything that's too cheap, you'll regret it. You already know the saying if it too good to be true, then it probably is. You can get an iPhone 6s for $50 and be ready for whatever thing that will be in the end.Other than the above you will most likely enjoy your stay in China like I did.

As a native Chinese, I really can't find much things that you shouldn't do. Of course, there are a lot of differences between China and your country, but now China is a open and safe society; if you do something wrong, people won't blame you much. Most Chinese are nice and friendly to foreigners, so as the time goes by, you will know about the differences naturally, so you don't need to worry much.In my opinion:
1. Don't do anything illegal, just as you do in your country, be nice to people.
2. Keep yourself safe, take a card of the hotel with you when you go out, take care of your belongings especially wallet, passport.
3. If there is someone too passionate to you, be careful.
4. If anything bad, call the police, number is 110.

China’s cultural roots run deep. Superstitions and taboos vary region to region and are so different that it’s impossible to produce a perfectly accurate list. Honestly, the small mistakes that visitors make are forgiven quickly as Chinese people are generally accommodating and realize you don’t have bad intentions. With that being said…Here are travel hacks that I always tell my friends visiting China:
1. Avoid cultural taboos that may cause misunderstanding or offense.Many Chinese people are superstitious. For example, the number 8 is a lucky number because “八 (bā) eight” sounds much like “发 (fā)”, which means “well-off” or “getting rich in a short time”. Therefore, #8 is considered to be a number that could lead to great wealth. Phone numbers, car license plate numbers and house addresses that include #8 are more expensive and in high demand. On the other hand, the number “四 (sì) four” is extremely unlucky, as it shares the same sound as the Chinese word for “死 (sǐ) death”. Also, never mention death in a conversation – this is a very bad omen as well. As for its “corresponding” number four, many elevators won’t even list the fourth floor!2. Don’t assume you will split the bill while dining out.Eating is central to Chinese life and culture. If you suggest going out for a meal or a drink with someone, this is considered an invitation. As the host, you can pay for the bill in this situation to show your kindness and respect. When you go to a restaurant, never order a dish just for yourself. Each dish is for sharing with others that you go out with. Family, friends, and colleagues are important and the sense of community is very strong in China. The number of dishes increases with the number of people. However, don’t worry, everyone gets a separate small bowl to serve themselves from the common plates at the table. This method is great for tasting the many delicacies of China. If your host tries to pay, don’t freely let them. Insist on paying to show manners. A small struggle for the bill is only customary.

This is difficult for us foreigners at first because we are so used to taking casual sips of our drinks without following those around us. However, in China, usually, everyone drinks together at certain times. Someone next to you may “劝酒 (quànjiǔ)” which means “let’s drink together” and is a way to propose a toast. A good rule is to follow those around you, especially the elders at the table. Hold your glass with the right hand and use the left hand to support the bottom. When you clix glasses together, it’s a good idea to lower yours and clix the top of your glass a bit lower than they hold theirs to show respect.7. Don't Kiss to Greet!Kissing a Chinese woman as a greeting will not only make her very embarrassed, but it will also embarrass (and possibly anger) any Chinese men with her. Kissing or hugging as a greeting is quite normal in the western world, but not in China. A warm handshake is enough! These should get you by during your first trip to China. As I said, the locals will forgive you since it’s not your culture if you make an innocent cultural faux pa. Just enjoy the wonders.

China’s cultural roots run deep. Superstitions and taboos vary region to region and are so different that it’s impossible to produce a perfectly accurate list. Honestly, the small mistakes that visitors make are forgiven quickly as Chinese people are generally accommodating and realize you don’t have bad intentions. With that being said…Here are travel hacks that I always tell my friends visiting China:
1. Avoid cultural taboos that may cause misunderstanding or offense.Many Chinese people are superstitious. For example, the number 8 is a lucky number because “八 (bā) eight” sounds much like “发 (fā)”, which means “well-off” or “getting rich in a short time”. Therefore, #8 is considered to be a number that could lead to great wealth. Phone numbers, car license plate numbers and house addresses that include #8 are more expensive and in high demand. On the other hand, the number “四 (sì) four” is extremely unlucky, as it shares the same sound as the Chinese word for “死 (sǐ) death”. Also, never mention death in a conversation – this is a very bad omen as well. As for its “corresponding” number four, many elevators won’t even list the fourth floor!2. Don’t assume you will split the bill while dining out.Eating is central to Chinese life and culture. If you suggest going out for a meal or a drink with someone, this is considered an invitation. As the host, you can pay for the bill in this situation to show your kindness and respect. When you go to a restaurant, never order a dish just for yourself. Each dish is for sharing with others that you go out with. Family, friends, and colleagues are important and the sense of community is very strong in China. The number of dishes increases with the number of people. However, don’t worry, everyone gets a separate small bowl to serve themselves from the common plates at the table. This method is great for tasting the many delicacies of China. If your host tries to pay, don’t freely let them. Insist on paying to show manners. A small struggle for the bill is only customary.

However, if you ask something outside of their “scxt” they might not be able to understand you. Therefore, it is crucial to learn some basic Mandarin Chinese for travel before you go! You can begin by taking a travel Chinese class. The first one is on the house!Xǐshǒujiān zài nǎr?洗手间在哪儿？Where is the bathroom?5. Chopstick Don’ts，Don't use your index finger wrong with "筷子 (kuàizi) chopsticks"Hold "筷子 (kuàizi) chopsticks" with your "大拇指 (dàmǔzhǐ) thumb," "中指 (zhōngzhǐ) middle finger," "无名指 (wúmíngzhǐ) ring finger," and "小拇指 (xiǎomǔzhǐ) little finger," but be sure not to point your "食指 (shízhǐ) index finger" at others. It is widely acknowledged in China that when someone is about to swear, they tend to point their "食指 (shízhǐ) index finger" at others. So if you let your "食指 (shízhǐ) index finger" point to other guests at the table, it is perceived as being impolite.Never hold "筷子 (kuàizi) chopsticks" in your mouth

But when you use only one of them to get something really small, it is like sticking up your "中指 (zhōngzhǐ) middle finger" to someone in Western culture.Never put your "筷子 (kuàizi) chopsticks" in a bowl of rice，Do not put your "筷子 (kuàizi) chopsticks" in the middle of a bowl of rice before eating. This is an action employed when you want to pay your respects to your ancestors who have passed away.Don't hit a bowl or plate with "筷子 (kuàizi) chopsticks"Do not use your "筷子 (kuàizi) chopsticks" to hit the bowl or the plate, even when you feel bored. That's what beggars do when they beg for food.
