My kids were not interested in reading. It was a fight every time we tried to get them to do it They preferred to have us read to them. They were just not interested.
Then, my son reached 3rd grade and his teacher said to me. “Don’t worry about what he reads, just get him to read something.”
What I knew about was son was that he was a budding comedian. He was already doing schtick (sp?) in school and for our family. I bought him a subscxtion to MAD magazine. This was my favorite when I was a kid and he was pretty much a chip off the old block. He LOVED it! He read every issue from cover to cover. Then, I bought him Walter the Farting Dog and the Captain Underpants series. Same thing. He ate them up like a box of Krispy Kremes.
Within months, he began reading other books. The ones his teacher had around the classroom. His reading level was at 5th grade halfway through the school year.
One day I came home from work to find him lying on the living room floor with a book in each hand, flipping through the pages and moving his head back and forth. He has never stopped and was admitted to UCLA with his highest SAT score in reading. His sister came up right behind him in the same way. She loved scary, spooky stories. We started out with the Goosebumps. Then the Harry Potter series, followed by Twilight. She, too is in college and was systemically reading at 1–2 grade levels above her age.
I was going about it all wrong. I thought they had to read the classics. And, a different one every night. In reality it was just the repetition of reading. Seeing words on the page over and over until they became familiar. The by- product of reading like this is good writing. The more you see words manipulated, the better you become at building a sizeable vocabulary and expressing yourself on the page.
So, big thank you to my kids’ third grade teacher Mrs. Haslet!

It is disturbing to me that so many so-called experts in the field of early education and literacy do not understand that the science of reading should be taught to teachers so that they can apply it to teaching their students to read.
And, to help any child to read, including a struggling reader, parents can also learn how to teach reading.
By about 8 years old or the third grade, struggling readers are already falling behind their classmates because they cannot access a curriculum which is available to students by reading or accessing text with fluency and comprehension.

Kids who don’t like to read are probably struggling as readers.
The science of reading includes direct instruction to teach students to distinguish the sounds of our language.
The best approach to teaching reading which I have found is Orton-Gillingham, and the textbook teaching this approach is about $65 new, and well worth its hefty price tag:
I have taught countless hundreds (thousands?!) of people to read with fluency and comprehension using the science of reading — I’ve taught more children than adults. Almost all were struggling as readers when we began.
In the course of a year, working together for about two hours daily four days a week, most students significantly improve their fluency, rate of reading, and their reading comprehension.
For those who prefer a written curriculum so parents can easily homeschool their children and teach them to read without writing a curriculum based on the O-G textbook — and which uses the science of reading and which is of course Orton-Gillingham-based

The parents who follow me on Twitter, and some on Quora, have experienced an inability of too many public school teachers to teach reading — because they were not taught the science of reading; and because they are given “whole language” or other nonsensical curriculum peddled by educational publishing companies and purchased by school districts. Teachers are often unwittingly forced to use curriculum that isn’t adequate to teach all students to read (because it isn’t based on the science of reading).
There are thousands or millions of parents right now who are extremely angry that their children aren’t learning to read, are struggling, and that school staff is kind and polite and placating, but are not adequately teaching literacy to their children.
Demand that all teachers be credentialed in the science of reading. It should be a requirement to be taught and then tested in the science of reading before a teacher graduates from a teaching program at any college or university.

By reading the Gillingham Manual, you’ll be best able to support your child’s learning needs. Note that the science of reading makes all kids learn better — and is not used exclusively for struggling readers. I actually used it to teach a very motivated and bright 3-year -old to read at a second grade level in three months.
Be patient, enjoy the time you spend teaching, enjoy your child’s learning process, always be enthusiastic, read adult books silently to yourself, as well as children’s books to children at home. Sit together in a cozy chair. Take out books from the library which you can read aloud and which are high interest books above your child’s reading level.
Expanding a child’s vocabulary, modeling the joy of reading, and the sounds of your happy voice as you ask the child what is happening at various parts of the story go very far in motivating a child to want to read.

The rest? Reading is a series of skills to be taught with direct instruction in an organized, progressive, multisensory and repetitive manner (repeating so that there is automaticity in recognizing sounds as being embodied in graphemes, the graphic depiction of sound using text).
Acquiring literacy is a process of constantly adding and improving skills. It takes time, application, and a research-validated process (science).
You can do this. A child will love you forever as their reading teacher because you make it possible for them to learn all kinds of new and exciting ideas, through literacy.

其余的呢?阅读是一系列的技能,需要以有组织、循序渐进、多感觉和重复的方式进行直接指导(重复,可以自动识别字母中包含的声音,即使用文本对声音进行图形描述)。
识字是一个不断增加和提高技能的过程。这需要时间、应用和经过研究验证的过程(科学)。
你可以做到的,作为他们的阅读能力方面的老师,孩子们会永远爱你,因为你让他们有可能通过识字来学习各种新的、令人兴奋的想法。

As a parent how I motivate my child to maintain a regular reading habit is by reading along with them. I pick a book of my choice while I make them pick theirs and we spend atleast half an hour reading something apart from their school syllabus.
At first I made them read books that has online videos of the same. First I made then read it and then I made them watch the videos. It helped them to better connect with the stories.

作为一名家长,我通过与孩子们一起阅读来激励我的孩子保持一个有规律的阅读习惯。我让他们选他们想看的书的时候,选了我自己喜欢的一本书,我们至少花半个小时读一些他们学校大纲以外的东西。
起初,我让他们读的书中有同样内容的在线视频。我先看,然后读,再让他们看视频。

Initiate a 30 minute silent reading time in bed before sleep. This gives the kids an extra half hour awake, incentive to enjoy reading because “just one more page” is always an acceptable excuse to stay awake a little longer and finding them sneaking some extra reading time with a torch under the covers isn’t punished sneaking an iPad or phone is but met with a smile and questions about the book they’re reading which gives them more conversation and time with you.

睡前在床上默读30分钟。这让孩子们多睡半小时,喜欢阅读的动机是因为“再多看一页”总是一个可以接受的借口,如果你发现他们拿着手电筒,藏在被子里偷偷摸摸地阅读,你就不会惩罚他们,你也不会惩罚他们偷拿iPad或手机,你只会微笑着回答他们正在阅读的书的问题,这样他们和你就有更多的对话以及更多时间和你在一起了。

There is no shortcut to lure kids into reading books it takes time and is a habit that can be cultivated only with time. However,it is well known that one should start at early ages.Board books with bright colours and felt pages can attract infants and toddlers.Keeping reading stories to kids even when you feel that they don’t understand a thing. You need not read a new book each day.Haven’t you noticed how they ask you to repeat a rhyme over and over? They rarely get bored of the same story.Likewise,if you keep reading the same book to them, they’ll learn the whole story and finish the sentences for you.Someday, they might even surprise you by reading it all by themselves. You can also try surprising them by spinning out a different story from an old book!
Don’t be disheartened if your child doesn’t show any liking for books.Keep getting new books for the;books that are of their interest. If he likes animals, get them books of animals. If she like aeroplanes, get her books about different kind of aeroplanes!Leave the books lying around just like toys.Someday they’ll definitely pick it up at least to see the pictures.
Most importantly, remember that you can’t pass on something that you don’t have.Make sure YOU read and that your child finds you immersed in a book (at least occasionally!).That’ll definitely inspire them to make friends with books.

You shouldn't think you have to convince your children. Instead try to instill a love of books. There are ways you can try to accomplish this.
Set aside an hour or so at bedtime and read to your kids every night. Look for subjects that interest them. Establish a routine and stick to it.
Lead by example. Let them see you reading. Read a variety of types of print materials.
Take your children to your public library and allow them to explore. Enroll them in story where they will observe other children engaged in reading.
Let them choose what they want to read.
If you can afford it, purchase books for your children. Owning the book may encourage them to read.
Don't give up on trying to interest your children in reading. Once you spark their interest it will lead to a lifetime of learning.

When I was a kid, my Mum and Dad had this wish that I read. Whenever my Dad would go out of town for his professional commitments, he would buy me comic books, fables and other fairy tales. They had pretty covers, enough to attract a kid like me.
I did explore those attractive looking books for few days but soon they lost the charm for me. In the end, I didn't read them. (I feel guilty to this day because there are children you aren't even given the opportunity. I had one and I didn't make good use of it. :/) They kept trying for years but all in vain. Finally they stopped trying. Years went by and suddenly, out of the blue, I developed an interest in reading.
I started reading and continued so because I encountered some really interesting novels. Or maybe they seemed interesting because now I loved reading. Anyways so I would even skip my night sleep so I could finish my novel quickly. The more I read, the more I developed the liking for it. And to this day, I love reading!
I mean at least what I believe, you can't make someone do something. Be it reading, writing, painting, sketching, studying, so on and so forth. It just comes from within. Having said that, I wouldn't say you shouldn't make the effort. Maybe I developed a liking for it because sub-consciously I always knew that my parents would love it if I will start reading books one day.

I was taking my baby to Story Time at the library when she was two months old.
We went to story time every week until school interfered. Additionally, every night, I read to her before bed.
Now she is six. She loves reading books.
I was bragging on her at the library and the librarian responded. “Of course she reads well. She went to Story Time every week.”
People have the idea that babies should be treated differently than older people. This is true to a certain extent as everyone needs encouragement and babies, in particular, need positive encouragement.
The routines you start as a baby continue for life.

Here are some ways you can inculcate a reading habit within your kids:

这里有一些方法可以让你的孩子养成阅读习惯:

Set up a reading nook! Having an area in the house to focus in will help create an environment for your child to enjoy their books in. Set up a corner in their bedroom or somewhere else in the house with good lighting, no technology, minimal noise, and books nearby!
Find books on topics they like. If your child likes fantasy or science fiction, buy books with those themes!
Set up a reading time, perhaps between dinner and bedtime. Having a period where your child reads every day helps build the habit and gets them into “reading mode”.
Read together! Whether you want to read out loud to your child or simply sit together while reading different books, reading together can help your child maintain focus.
Remove tech when reading. Try to minimize the number of distractions around your child.
Have your child read to you. When they read out loud, it can help them comprehend their stories better. Reading out loud also makes reading into an activity to bond over. Ask your child questions while they read out loud to you to make sure they understand the themes of their stories.
Go to the bookstore or library with your child. Make an event out of it! This can get them excited about reading since they get to make their own decisions on what they read.

How do I make children read?
I read to my children when they were babies .
Soon they wanted to read along with me as I read them the story. They loved this method of focusing on them in the books. Making it easier for them to love to read and enjoy books that I read to them.
Please try this method and you’ll see your child or children become focused on paying more attention if you “add their names” to the storyline of the book. Please feel free to use this technique!

I started reading to my kids at a very young age. When they were around a year old and beginning to use words I sat them on my lap and read to them. So I didn't read the actual story but I pointed to the pictures and got them to say what they saw in the picture.
Once they were old enough to speak in actual sentences I read them books. Doctor Seuss "Hop on Pop" was an early favorite. They knew it by heart and were able to "read" it to me. This persuaded them that they could read. So I let them read it to me. Bedtime story is a very important ritual for little kids and once they begin to read, they can read you some of the bedtime story.
When they were older, I made sure that they had a lot of books available for them to read, and after going to bed, they were allowed to read in bed for half an hour before going to sleep. We also limited television and computer time so they were encouraged to read instead.
