Mumbai is a city of contrasts. Here, the super-rich and slum dwellers live side by side. As more and more luxury skyscrapers go up, slums are forced to make way for them. Conflicts ensue. So what is life like, in a megacity with 20 million inhabitants?
In Dharavi, Asia's largest slum, more than a million people live in extremely crowded conditions. But the neighbourhood is dynamic. We meet Mahesh, 27, who was born in the slum and has never left. Today, he runs a recycling plant that employs about 20 people. Dharavi's shadow economy is said to bring in 800 million euros a year. However, the future of the neighbourhood is uncertain, as it sits on valuable property -- located right in the city centre. With the support of local authorities, real estate magnate Babulal Varma is tearing down slums to build luxury housing for the upper classes. Will Dharavi survive?
Mumbai is already one of the most populous cities in the world. By 2035, the population is projected to rise drastically -- to 30 million. The city’s inevitable expansion affects not only the people who live there, but also the forests that surround it. These include the "Sanjay Gandhi National Park". Now, the leopards living in the park have started to make regular forays into new housing developments, looking for food. They attack stray dogs, as well as humans. As urbanization continues, the conflict between humans and wild animals is sure to become more dire

Hard work doesn't always get you anywhere. Luck is what we all need to succeed. Being born in the right country, social class, and family really helps.

I can't imagine the minds that would change in the States if many people had to live in the slums of Mumbai for just a week. The perseverance of the human spirit in Mumbai is something else. Much respect to the residents of the city.

Someone
"the Leopard just want to survive". I have huge respect to this man. He has a great understanding and no hate for the animal even after his daughter was killed by a leopard.

Sickening how they told that family what to say and poorly trying to manipulate the media. Thank you for this exceptional documentary

Considering the fact that I was born and raised in America, watching this makes me more humble for the little things I have and to always remember that it is people who have it way worst than you have. Just got to be thankful!!!!!

Noah Douglas
In the car ride with the contractor talking about tearing down the slums was crazy… the stark contrast between his elitist lifestyle and the livelihood of those in poverty is almost unbearable. It feels like a dystopian future movie, yet this is all real

Fi Rouge
This is honestly the BEST documentary channel ever. I love the variety you cover and that nothing seems to be off bounds. Great work as usual!
This has made me feel even more grateful for what i have. So sad to see people uncessarily suffer like this.
Is there an upxe on that contractors arrest?

I was born in a suburb close to Mumbai and that story of accountant hits the right chord. Now, I am living abroad for last 3 years but instantly I can recall all of my hundreds of train rides. Every other major issue of dabbawalas, Dharavi, high rise, leopards was on point and for an outsider seems like you did some serious research with locals. it was good but I would have appreciated more if some of the recent work done by locals and government was highlighted to improve the infrastructure of the town anyways it was amazing and keep doing the good work

There is sadness and absurdity in this situation when viewed from every angle. But when you hear at 26:10 "I have nine kids", you have to wonder why someone living in such a harsh existence would choose to bring 9 more people into it. He laments 17 people living in one small place, after listing his parents, brother, and brother's wife. That suggests 5 adults and 12 children. I think I see one of the biggest contributors to the problem.

I was born and raised in Mumbai, but have been living abroad for 11 years now - great to see this documentary! Quite accurate. It is a land of contrasts, as is India as a whole. I really hope the situation improves in Dharavi, because it's been the same since I left - because the leather industry there holds a lot of promise. There also must be other cities with the same opportunities and potential of growth as Mumbai, to reduce the overcrowding and pollution. Change is happening though, day by day. I'm confident that this city will be quite different by 2030-2035.

Zena Xr
If you consider the population of leopards in mumbai its roughly around 47 to 50. Which seems very less but density wise it's very high. Being an indian i really appreciate the documentry for explaining that "the cost of development really comes with a price "

Shi Palabrica
DW Documentary is the only channel that I constantly watch to learn more about different cultures and societal problems that people encounter around the globe. Thank you for this eye-opening documentary about Mumbai! ❤️

Aldrin Manyando
Well-documented film and couldn't stop watching it from beginning to end. It's really disheartening to see the living conditions of those in squalor. Population explosion is also a contributing factor in overcrowding

Im sympathetic both with the people and with the authorities as well. Re-settling people in Mumbai is always a challenge. A city which cannot expand horizontal and to keep all these people closer to the areas they live in itself is a big achievement. Yes they've lost a lot but i think they atleast live in the same place. In chennai re-settling people will be some 20-30 km away from their dwelling place. You would do well to see Kannagi Nagar and listen to the plight of people there.
Adaptation is the key in any place. People who are adapted to live out of their comfort zone would never complain. But the ones who feel the loss more than looking at the future cant hide their feelings. Everyone's views make sense. Govt ensures slums are gone, people get a new house, people are absolutely entitled to say this is an unfair deal, builders get return of investment. My view, if you see from a wholistic perspective, then maybe... Maybe everyone is a winner. Its not a joke to resettle people in a place like Dharavi. And Dabbawalas. The SIX SIGMA legends in India. Not on paper. But on real life

Jagsher Dhaliwal
As an Indian, I hope we can develop as a society where we can all live with dignity.
Watching this is uncomfortable and feels like the scale of the problem is too large.

Great work DW team. You guys have done a good job. Very sad to see these poor people are living like this and big contractors are making it even worse for them. Hope they get proper shelter , clean water, food and good study for their kids.

Thank you for this documentary. I’m disgusted with them manipulating the poor family. I’m glad you were still able to capture that on camera. They are literally just moving the slums to new locations. No solution. Just build. Build. Build.

Bulletguy07
I was just enjoying my evening meal whilst watching this.....and then came the open sewers! The vast chasm between those at the bottom of life living in the slums to the uber wealthy sitting in their penthouses, looking down on the poor, is just mind boggling. The Ranger guy at the leopard sanctuary had it right at 40:48 "a lot of this area used to be dense jungle and we should not be invading their habitat". This is another excellent documentary from DW and thank you to all who work hard making them.....it's much appreciated.

Ian Dunwoodie
respect , once again , to DW .I lived in India for 5 years .....in Mumbai too ....40 years ago . I is interesting to see the changes ..... and how life is not so different for many ....

Excellent documentary. For europeans, it is fascinating to see how india develops even with its pros and cons.

A great documentary by DW, left me feeling profoundly grateful to be living in my country. I can't help but wonder - where is education in this great city? I understand that people have to make a living by coming into the city but is that all there is about life in Mumbai - working to meet ends meet?

The moment around 14:00 when that man started crying, that just broke my heart. Bless him. I hope life is kinder for him now.

Rommel Bearhawkie
This is an amazing docu. Thanks so much. I feel I'm right in the real life in Mumbai. The difference of the elitists and the poor is crazy. Hope there will be a part 2 of this. Bless them.

This documentary took a turn of human living like rats situation to a wildlife adventure. The city is awesome. True Nature of people and nature around them.

I was in Calcutta in the end of the 80s and took a bus that turned out to be too full, so I had t hang out of the door, because the driver left very sudden. Then it turned out that the roads had big potholes in them. It was in the outskirts so the bus went very fast and I couldn't jump off. Every minute after that experience I consider as extra time I got from Parama Purusa...

That poor little girl, the story brought tears to my eyes. Of course the leopard is just an animal, but this could've been avoided, a sad example of what happens when we don't respect nature.
Humankind's greed is so disgusting, the stories shared in this documentary are really sad

Vegan4life1
People living and working in the slums are the hardest working people. The gentleman crying broke my heart. He gave everything he had to make a business and take care of his family. I don’t like the contractor. Change lives with the poor people and then see how he feels.

The over population and slums part is soo relatable to my city here in karachi. Even here people from all over the country come in hope of better earnings but due to negligence of governments they too end up living in large slums or illegal residences. If these issues are not dealt with now the situation might worsen in the coming years
Mumbai is still a phenomenal city though

Thankyou DW for making this Amazing Documentary :) You know?? .. Many people who come to India on a Tourist visit and people who explore India staying for 3 months to 1 year. say that they feel Energized and Positive after coming to India because Indian people are still happy for the lives they live in but European / Western / Developed country people feel themselves they are not living happy lives and stays in Depression in their own country even. Many Tourist People feel and Cry thinking all these and the lives their country has offered them like a Paradise in comparison to India, but finally they become positive before they go out from India. Its because they observe the preserverance of Indian people live happily even in poor conditions with whatever they have. And Its also just a Paradox that Apple founder Steve Jobs, who was thinking to lose his life after the failiure of his previous Business in the US, became motivated after his long stay in India :))

This Mumbai Documentary just shows 25-30% of Mumbai in terms of location footage and also its people/society, no doubt whatever shown here is true but it only focusses on just a fraction of the society mainly the poor. There are other nicer things which needs to be highlighted as well for example: the cosmopolitan society, street food culture savored by the rich and the poor alike, the educated working professionals, the accessible public transport network, the peaceful suburbs and Mumbai's various festivities.

I am a resident of Mumbai currently located in Abroad. I could connect most part of the documentary but there were other positive sides like Mumbai Festivals, Mumbai Fisherman Community who are the original resident of Mumbai, Mumbai Metro etc. are not mentioned.
As India is growing and other metro cities are getting developed, migration to Mumbai has reduced in years. I feel, not just Mumbai, now entire India is slowly growing.
Every Mumbaikar as well must watch this documentary so they will also have exact idea about rest of the Mumbai.
Kudos to the team who created this amazing documentary.

DW does it again - I was riveted to my sofa - just a high quality production.
These cities in India that are growing so fast must address the sewage issues. The cost of sewage treatment and maintenance is very high for small cities of just 70,000 so these projects in India will have to be on a mega-scale. Big $$$ investment.

What a great documentary. You guys are the example what journalism should be. Thanks for DW documentary team for bringing different aspects of people and world for us. God bless you guys. Also I feel lil sad for leopards which are kept inside the cage. They should release then in jungles or national parks which are far from human beings.

I choose Dharavi to live in, after being unemployed for three years. The initial two weeks were hard, but people's love and support led me to what I am today. Being a PhD holder from an IIT in an STEM subject, and being jobless, manual works were too hard for me. And here I started my new career all together different from a scientist, and destiny had to surrender me within five years. Destiny had three such beautiful apartments for me in these skyscrapers, and more to emigrate to another beautiful European country. In short, Dharavi made my life.
