I'm too afraid to go out at night in my mid-sized American town, plus it's boring and dirty, so I watch Travel TV and am amazed by the cleanliness, safety, and futuristic look of Tokyo. If I were younger, I'd like to visit, but I'm 72 and just don't have the energy to walk the town and see the sights, which seem endless. Particularly ironic that Japan lost the war against us, yet they're doing much better than we are in virtually every category.

Well after world war 2 we told japan they could only maintain a defense force and where not allowed to build up a military. Thus, all the money Japan used to pump into their military instead was re-directed into infrastructure and other public programs.

@KidRiver According to Wikipedia Japan spends $50 Billion on its defence force, that's still a lot of money.

Because they lost the War, they can be like nowadays. They change their mind and spirit to Economy and Technology.

@Zohirul Islam Jewel not compared to the $750 billion the USA spends.

Maybe it's dirty where you are. I live in northern NY where it's beautiful.

Bread Crumb
@KidRiver not only that, they have quite a strong sense of social cohesion and utmost respect for public and private spaces for the most part. So it is much easier to maintain infrastructure and cleanliness.

You've never been to Beverly Hills. Not every city in the US is as bad as your own.

Jim you need to go see Tokyo. Don’t give up on the dream!

I'm Japanese and I'm envy about US society and scenery. They look free and lively.
Well everything have pros and cons

I get where you are coming from but as someone who worked in japan for 4 months for a german IT company.
Its not all what seems like. The average Japanese worker is so stressed out their economic sucess is built on the mental health of their people.
My japanese collegues wouldnt believe me when i told them in germany we only work 8 hour.
The problem i had with japanese mentality is best described in an example: there is a problem at work. The japanese worker works 24 hours until that is solved even at expense of own health.
The german worker gets off and works tomorrow at the problem with a fresh head and works again. Japanese work really really hard to the parts where it can sometimes be less efficient.

@M A I don't get why Japanese put LED lights and TV screens on every building. People in America would probably protest against so many lights around town.

It’s never too late to do something you want.

@D. W.K they lost the war but they gained something the Americans never got

I'd like to visit but I'm too young! Haha, maybe when I'm older I'll go. Not sure how my family would feel about it though.

@gökotta NY city! omg dirtiest city in the US. And so dangerous too. Can’t walk alone at 2 am. But true northern rural NY is beautiful. But too rural and it doesn’t even compare to Tokyo. There’re places in Japan in rural places that are breathtaking too. You just haven’t visited there yet. Northern NY can be pretty though. Just too cold.

The streets of Japan are so beautiful. Just looking at the streets makes my heart feel at peace.

Everywhere looks so organized. Not a single crumb in sight on the floor. Incredible country. Greetings from Puerto Rico.

Japan is such introvert country and I love it. Lol
