HILARIOUS!!!! I can''t wait to show this video to my students so they feel better about not getting full marks on their tests!! But maybe I''ll skip the part where I talk about having a drink while taking the test!!

This should be interesting to learn how English subject is taught in high schools of China.
Moreover, it does sound tough from the English tests there, even my first language is English, but I have never seen some unique questions like these in my academic life.

Guillaume Couture-Lévesque
That was really fun, but even as a native (ish) English speaker I feel like some of the answers would''ve been so very difficult. Great job to all of you and to the students actually taking this test, your English is probably better than mine.

It''s interesting that later in the prompt, the word "pull" did actually appear, so you don''t necessarily need to know what chin-ups are to pick the right answer for that one; you just need pretty good reading comprehension. This looks like a difficult test but it''s still doable within the frxwork of the content given; you just need to be a very good test-taker, which doesn''t always directly correlate one''s mastery of the language

I think Evelyn’s English proficiency now is testament to the success of the program despite how silly it may seem to native English speakers. People tend to forget that this is for English as a second language.
The questions wrt the finger lengths is a test of the comprehension of the passage, the student does not necessarily need to agree with the assertions in the passage which is some superstitious nonsense.

That’s a typical English test in High school in Beijing, I remember doing some of the exact same questions when I was in high school. Top students are usually expected to get full marks in those multiple choices and are allowed to have some points taken off in their writing.

When I was in college, even when I was an undergraduate, some of our major course materials were not in Chinese, but in English, because there were no translations at that time. English learning is one of the reasons for China''s rise because students learn English, go abroad, learn advanced knowledge and then return to China.

Amy I’m chinese English speaking and it looked really hard. There was also hints of “Chinese thinking” in some of the parts you read.

I tried the English language test for Australian citizenship when I was visiting Melbourne and that was just as crazy. I failed, although born and bred in UK

Amy should ask a bunch of Chinese to do HSK6 test. it will be interesting to see how they fail the part one.

I did a IELTS test right after high school and got 7 in Speaking. I did the same test after studying and living in Toronto for 8~9 years. Keep in mind, I used to do sales, and then call center tech-support, so I basically speak for a living and I was pretty good at it. AND, the 2nd time I did IELTS, I only got 5.5 in Speaking.

The not entirely sure what the answer is gives me flashbacks to my English exams. Here in Germany, teachers really love to make right/wrong/not in the text questions and "wrong" and "not in the text" were sometimes not well defined. Example: Amanda likes blue t-shirts.
Question: Amanda likes red t-shirts.
Is this wrong because she likes blue t-shirts or is this not in the text because they only talked about blue t-shirts and not about red ones?

That could''ve-been-sexual part is so hilarious. I''m pretty sure that whoever wrote this stuff is either someone who is not capable of comprehending the best part of sex or someone who is not a native English speaker.

As for me, during high school, English was the only subject that I could attain an impressive ranking among all students in class.

I feel like I got cheated from not getting to see the other three questions Amy failed at

The “what” should’ve been given half a point! You guys got the word correct but missed the capitalization. The test seems indeed difficult.

I was in high school in 1998, when I could get high marks for this kind of test, 20 years later I still can''t speak English, what''s the point? Chinese educational institutions still do not reflect!

Correct, you should think about the answer that the test maker wants... I took a FAA AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS TEST thinking that way; I got 105 points out out 105 points on a timed test. Thinking outside the box to apply your knowledge! Amazing... know your teacher, lol.

Surely the Chinese lady who had lots of practice was really fast at doing these, because writing exam is a SKILL, it is not only about knowledge of the language

Okay, then you guys can take an IELTS test for comparion. IELTS is designed and managed by Britain. Or, you can try TOEFL and it is an English test designed and managed by America. Good luck!

The test doesn''t seem that difficult to me. A high school student should be able to ace it in my opinion.

This is a really bad test written by some unprofessional people, it’s very simple but with so many choices unlike the SAT or GRE exams where it’s hard but with exactly only one answer

David Lee
25/29 = 86/100 = 129/150. Not bad. If you were local, you were less likely to be able to study in one of China''s top universities such as Tsinghua University or Peking University, but you still have a chance to attend one of the 985 universities.

I wonder if they mean "engineer" in the British sense (someone who designs, constructs or repairs devices) or in the US sense (a train driver)?

The funny thing is, as someone who grew up taking Chinese classes in Saturday school, this testing format totally makes sense in Chinese. But to use the same format in English is hilarious because I don’t think this test actually measures any knowledge of English. Because… the structure of English isn’t the same to the structure of Chinese. Like, really, if you have to guess this much on a test, are you really demonstrating your real knowledge of the material? Who the heck wrote these paragraphs or excerpts? I would fail this style of English test. And I thought the SATs were hard… lol

。LOL
