Studying business management in college. This quote was from my personal finance class. I’m blown away lol.

Calculate the Future Value of the Benefit

An employer that provides a 401(k) retirement plan offers a valuable benefit. Hopefully, your employer will offer a matching contribution as a nudge to get you to do the right thing in preparing for retirement.Another nudge is to sign up for payroll deduction so you never see the money.

If an employer provides a match of $3,000 a year to your $3,000 in contributions, all the money in the account will grow free of income taxes until the funds are withdrawn. Over 20 years, the annual employee and employer contributions of $6,000 growing at 6 percent annually will be about $240,000 (using Appendix A.3). At 8 percent interest it grows to over $302,000.

If working full-time does not earn you enough to pay all the bills, there is no excuse not to have a side job in the gig economy. The options are virtually unlimited. Remember, too, that this income is not to pad an entertainment budget; it is to fund your retirement plan.

I first heard the term "moonlighting" as something you could get in trouble for.
Guess it's officially the norm now.

and you can STILL get in trouble for it depending on what you do for your main job or your side job. you teach kids? better not be on OF. or work as a bartender. it’s ridiculous that people can still get fired for that when they need to do it just to make a living

Trollsama
yeah sorry, but there is only 1 condition where I will allow an employer to tell me where I can and can not work for a side job....
and thats when they pay me enough that I have no reason to have a side job.

That’s one of the conditions, the other is if I am in a position to compete directly with them and funnel work my way who come in to visit them. Using a day job as a way to poach clients is a legitimate concern in my opinion.

Trollsama
it absolutely is....
And if your running a company where that is a legitimate thing you need worry about.... you should probably be paying your employees enough to not need a second job :P

TroutCuck
I work in insurance and had to do training that I have to disclose side jobs where there may be a conflict of interest. Like I probably can't work in billing at a hospital while working for them, which is fair.
But I could do pretty much anything else in a hospital like appointment setter or something. Anything outside of Healthcare doesn't matter.

ImportantDoubt6434
Yeah I noticed that only my first job even had moonlighting clause.
Not like I’d respect it anyway, but they just gave up on more recent jobs and doubled down on the shit pay/unx Busting pig behavior

OleManNipploplis
Its indoctrination into wage slavery. They want us all to be complacent while some scumbag changes 100 words every two years and prints this textbook over and over and sell them for hundreds of dollars a pop.
What a leech

meatdiver
Yes. You could have potential conflict of interest in certain line of work and you can get fired from your main
job for messing things up

"Don't have fun, live to work."
Is what I got from that.

My plan: take that time to learn a new skill, then hop jobs.
The plan has been working, 42% bump in pay in 24 months

That's what it's going to take on a large scale before employers learn that slave wages aren't sustainable.

the sheer amount of propaganda in the textbooks for my MBA would chill your blood

AphoticTide
I’m curious, I’ve never seen this from a top tier school. I can only imagine that this is being fed to students from bottom tiers.
What MBA program is it? Like where would you rank the school on an academic list? The last time someone showed us something like this it was from one of those fake colleges like phoenix university

deeyenda
I've never seen a top-tier MBA student open a book, period.

failedlibrarian
Apropos of not much, I've heard people with MBAs from top-tier schools saying much the same thing.
It's also something business papers allude to a lot. (Usually while complaining about companies' huge "labour costs")

Your country straight up hates you.

401k is the greatest scam in the history of scams.
Everyone is forced to pay into it.
The wealthy short sell the stocks to drop its value.
They swap around hundreds of thousands of shares with other whales in the darkpool.
You are left with no pension and a small 401k which hasn’t even grown beyond inflation.

shastadakota
My company offers a 401k, but it is totally voluntary. They match my contributions, up to 6% of my income, at a rate of 125% ( I put in $1.00, they match it with $1.25). I never miss the money since I never see it. You get to choose the investment mix, from a very conservative money market account, to a riskier, aggressive growth fund. Your choice. I have chosen a managed index fund which is geared to the approximate year of my retirement. You can borrow against your balance up to 50% at a very favorable rate of interest, and pay it back through payroll deductions, (mostly would be used for a down payment on a primary residence, etc.). I contribute at the max rate of 6% of my income. After 25 years, my balance, which is invested with Fidelity, is nearly half a million dollars. I am not a highly compensated executive, I work as a field technician. So, I would beg to differ, not a scam.

So a second job is to cover the bills... but the income is for retirement? They need to make up their mind.

Yeah seems like no one else noticed this。
