Probably one of the only webnovels where the male MC is not only surronded by a lot of beautiful women but they are even proper characters with their own full personality and even more astonishing so not his harem. Wonderfully refreshing. Mostly because I despise harem stuff and am sick of it appearing in more than half of the good chinese series I read. Well done author. Characters, plot and it's twists are all very satisfying

This was my first webnovel and my second chinese book. Like the previous one, there were some weird sentences and translations, but way less than in the other book I read. The concept of this story was great, it reminded me a bit of Crusade in Jeans. But with added fantasy in the form of witches. it was also a lot less believable, with the amount of technological advances this person thought up. There was some weird anti-western sentiment at times. (Like a mediaval general? looking at him using chopsticks and commenting they seemed way more useful than knife and fork) I've never met anyone who thought that the first time they saw/tried chopsticks. There are certainly advantages to chopsticks, but the same can be said for knife and fork. The budding romance thing is weird, with how young the girls are compared to the prince who is (was?) about 40 in the modern world. creepy

I'll have to knock stars off a potentially good novel due to the author's regular injections of propaganda.

I'm sure many of those handing out five stars for this novel don't realize that almost all Chinese authors will inevitably inject their feelings of superiority of Communism and ethnicity over Western civilization. For race, Chinese authors tend to refer to the superiority of the "Hua" in their novels, which is referencing back to Chinese. Now, I didn't see author Er Mu glorify this often made point in his novel (to his credit), but you have to be blind to miss his frequent touting of Communism (in his novel this would be represented by "City Hall" and "the administration") over western political systems (represented by the "nobles" and "the Church").

And yet, most of the modern conveniences and developments he introduces as an Isekai traveler are developments originating from Western civilization--a fact I'm sure Er Mu conveniently ignores.

It's fine if you disagree with this being an issue, but if you were to read more translated Chinese novels, you'll quickly see what I mean as these themes reoccur time and time again.

I'm sure if I wrote a fantasy novel where my main character ends up in China and has to go about replacing a corrupt, inept, and backward governing system that was Communism with a Western based political system it would be overwhelmingly thumbed down by Chinese readers.

Great story with some nice character designs and vast, interesting world but it has some flaws. MC has so versatile knowledge and superior memory that it's sometimes too much (especially given his normal background, no preparation time and zero "superpowers", it's impossible for any mechanical engineer or any other engineer to accomplish something even remotely similar to what Roland did in such a short time and without painfully reinventing tons of little annoying things and prototyping).

I read a lot more of this book/web series than I should have considering that I never really jelled with it almost from the start. I think what kept me reading was the similarity between this and the Arch Magus series by Michaels Sisa. I don't know which series came out first (nor care really), but the main premise of both stories are eerily similar:

An intelligent/powerful person from a different time/place is body swapped into a spoiled young nobleman who has been given charge of an out of the way town. The nobleman they have replaced is a horrible human being who was a sexual predator mixed with Prince Joffery from Game of Thrones. They are also the underdog in a competition to prove themselves so that they might one day be king. This person uses their advanced knowledge to turn this town into something much more than it has any right to be just in time to fend off a bigger conflict that is facing the kingdom as a whole.

The biggest difference (regarding the overall premise) of course is that this series has witches in it, but honestly, it's not that much of a difference. The characters in the arch magus series are magical in nature and are given a massive boost from knowing the body swapped character, so it almost evens out here as well.

However, where these series really split from each other is in quality. I absolutely loved the Arch Magus series as it quickly gets you invested in the characters, the setting and the conflict. This book on the other hand does none of these things.

The main character is, strangely, the least developed of all the characters. We get some really quick back story on him in the first chapter, and then after that, we learn nothing more about this character. He never seems to miss his home, his family or his old friends, he doesn't question the journey he is on, and for all intents and purposes, his old life doesn't exist. We don't even get much character motivation for him other than simply wanting to do stuff because... why not?

The witches are a little more fleshed out, but not by much. They at least get backstories and motivations, but it's not nearly so much that you grow attached to any of them in the 200+ chapters that I read.

About the best thing I can say for this book is that the premise is really cool, but that brings us full circle back to the Arch Magus comparison as I think that is a far superior series.

The final thing I want to note about this book is how creepy it is regarding how it sexualises minors. At first, I put this down to some translation issues (of which there were quite a few), but as the story progresses you start to realise that yes this older man is dressing up teenage girls in what is basically a slutty witch costume, and as the novel goes on the girls get younger. It never actually crosses a definitive line, but it was more than enough to make me continually grow more uncomfortable with every chapter, especially as the number of witches grew and their ages went down.

So overall I don't see what the hype is about with this one, and I recommend trying other things instead. For people fascinated with the premise, then I recommend Legend of the Arch Magus, but for people who like the long web series format, I recommend He Who Fights Monsters by Shirtaloon, or Mother of Learning by Domagoj Kurmaic.

A traveler from a modern world gets transported to a medi fantasy world with a unique magic system (Isekai), the book is filled with intrigue, mystery, action, war, kingdom building and humor. One of the best Chinese Webnovel I have read, started strong but lost steam by the end.

It stands out among the Chinese series in having a magic flintlock plot, actual characterization, and a non-wuxia world-building. I liked it a lot and was hooked all the way to the last 100-200 chapters. The story became torturous to read in the end and took me over a few months and a lot of willpower to complete.

The book is worth diving into and would rate it as 5/5 for 90% of the content. The last 10% is not even worth reading.

This was a fun book with some flaws. For example, the main character keeps having giant instances of dumb luck after another. Every time he wants to make a technological advancement he happens to find a new witch with just the right power, when he needs to investigate a murder, he happens to find a witch with just the right power. The romance I also found somewhat annoying. The society the MC tries to build is a flawed socialist country.

That being said, this novel is as good as Chinese novels get, and I enjoyed most of it.

The most boring read ever. 150 chapters in and the mc shows no interest in any of the woman. In fact you experience very little through the characters. It is very clinically told by a third person perspective.

Worth a read. The world building is in-depth and characters are fleshed out. However, sometimes I believe the issues and problems the characters face are too easily overcome such that they have not gone through difficult situations or lost much.

A nice introduction to the world, more information about the magic system would definitely be appreciated but it is justifiable in universe. As light novels go it's very enjoyable, if you're new to the genre it's a good starting point in the fantasy subgenre.

This is one of those webnovel series that you would never regret sacrificing your sleep, energy, and time for as it really has a very enjoyable plot, thoughtfully written characters, and a good mix of humor, romance, drama, and action. However, there were definitely some pieces of information that someone with a critical eye would be put off with, but if you just focus on the interactions of the characters and the world-building that this series brings, you would definitely appreciate this a lot.

The isekai hero is someone who's actually just a very ordinary guy who studies engineering. There's nothing exceptional about him apart from all the knowledge that he has, from being in a modern civilization, that can change the book's universe as the setting is in a medi age where the church hunts witches, treating them as demons. Nonetheless, the author still did a good job in providing him some fun interactions with the other characters in the book, giving us enough entertaining content. So contrary to what usually happens in most books, in this case, it is the side characters that are truly the highlight. I won't go much into detail about each of them as there's a lot. In a nutshell, the only flaw is probably how the main character was written but nonetheless, it doesn't diminish the overall quality of the series
