First, let's get one thing out of the way if you're coming from Europe of South East Asia bad choice for places to come to live but your hands are probably tied. So I will be 100% honest with you and tell you what I can for advice from what I learned.
Okay so you come to Merica now what about the culture or work or mentality or laws, so let's start with Merican culture first there is no set standard, in fact, there is no official language for the great states. But if you can consider how Americans think it's that they are better than every country and can bomb and kill whoever they want(no joke many people think this way, not me or many other Americans but a lot do) it's all about power and wealth here my friend. Oh and super sizes for food of course so if you want a short answer to fit in here of course that's a slight exaggeration. But seriously I would like to note again not all American are ignorant and stupid just most.
Okay, let me really go into detail about how to fit in. One this culture is about work, power, and status. General American work more hours than in Europe, and laws are not as good here either.
So really culture wise you don't have to change because they are many cultures here, but you're probably saying okay what about anything else.
Well, one law changes a lot or not, for instance, my state will eliminate all plastic bags in stores within a year in a half, but not all state has the same laws.

Be smart do your research
Learn that not one thing is right or wrong here, things are based state by state and culture example(SJW(not all are like this but some are extremist that give SJW a bad name) will tell you your a rapist and evil because your a man) so get over it or not assuming your a male or female I am not sure and honestly I don't care because people may think otherwise but your gender isn't gonna affect what I'm saying anyway.
Educate yourself or get more skills and find a good job if you work in the public sector it can be a very easy and reliable job, I cannot stress how important a good education and skills are here it's not a want but a necessity
Be careful with meeting new people some people are awesome and others are bigots or robbers
To be American always make sure to supersize your meals and gain at least 70 pounds
Be prepared to work 40 hours or more a week and have shitty pay for your first jobs

Get more educated learn about stocks and business that's what America is made of
The hard truth is the rich are rich and most a poor of course the only way not to be poor is to have some kind of good degree or really valuable skill many people are desperate for work so if you don't have a good education back to step 3
Save for many painfully long year's buy a house that you will owe a mortgage to for 30 years and get a wife some kids drink some beers outside and live the American dream.
Okay, final step your living the American dream and have a beautiful house and family, now go on Quora and answer some question so people can think your crazy but in all seriousness, many of these steps I listed are important.
P.S. sorry for grammar and even though I joked about something I meant what I said about many of the steps and how crucial education is here and working and struggling to succeed so I wish you luck and I probably didn't answer ai best I could but honest but you taking the effort to ask this question ensures me you'll do find may luck be forever in your favor,

Have a goal: what do you want to do? what did you come here for? to make more money? meet a girl? Be a famous movie star?whatever it may be make sure you have a goal to see progress, celebrate milestones . This is single handedly the most important step. You need a good structured plan on how you will progress and make it to your goal and how you will get there.
Education? Whatever it is you need a goal Education education education. huge priority.
Stable living conditions: quality house, good car , good family well being ect.
Choosing the right city : Assuming you are a immigrant try to live in the biggest cities or metropolitan areas where there are alot of different races andgroups. The best place to start would be southern california or northern california. But some other good places are seattle washington, austinTX, Las vegas nevada, New york city. Chicago, new jersey , or any major metro city on the east coast. These cities have alot of opportunity
Avoid these states: Utah montana wyoming, idaho, and northern nevada. These states are a big no no they lower moral .also there is some racism here to be careful.

Always go 100% full send on your goals and dreams. DO NOT SLACK do not waste time. You always have to be on the drift going above and beyond. If you go easy on yourself you are bound to be medicore . Everyone here is on a grind to reach there goals you need to compete with them. This is a very important step do not go easy on yourself do not waste time.
Never go hungry, never lose hope. Ive been through the worse, have seen the worse. Karma is strong here
Manage money well. Materialism is americas popular poison. Do not be distracted or waste your money on useless junk over quality items
Hope this helps if you have any other questions PM me or comment :)

It really depends on what paperwork you brought here. Do you own property offshores, no criminal record, have a higher education, good career experience or known multiple languages? If so, you’re a bit closer than the average American.
However, you need to get your feet on the ground first. Start with the basics by getting a place to stay, finding a job and getting familiarized with that area. If you’ve got that, focus on your job and look at other job opportunities at the same time. I say that, because you want to find something that suits skills and profession.
As for the having assets, maybe you could get in touch with someone back at your old home. If no one is living there, think about renting it out and have a trusted person handle it until you can personally. That way, you will have additional cash flow coming in for you and your goals.
Just be aware, the term, “American Dream” can be a trap, so many seek to find wealth and success in a world of so few wealthy. That is not to say you won’t be successful it just might be a good idea to stick to realistic goals like home/vehicle ownership, good living wages and a job you enjoy.
The reality to the dream is in how happy and well off you are as a person. You don’t need fancy cars, watches, clothes and material items to be happy.
Just a nice companion, cozy home and peace.

There are an infinite number paths to success - you can read the stories of successful people in the US and find many different and unique stories. The most common and practical advice that I know of is:
Be positive - I don't know if being an optimist is a choice or if it's something you're born with but it's a great gift.
Keep going - most people give up not realizing that they were only a short distance from their goal.
Be giving and helpful to others - most success comes because you have found a way to meet the needs of others and in so doing you (or the things you do or produce) become very valuable and eventually you will be rewarded for that value that you bring.
Best wishes

Since nobody has given the simple and obligatory answer, I'll do it, even if it is a bit cynical and trite, MONEY.
"Life is a game. Money is how we keep score." ~Ted Turner
"It's a zero sum game, somebody wins, somebody loses. Money itself isn't lost or made, it's simply transferred from one perception to another." ~Gordon Gekko, Wallstreet
Life is a zero-sum game and money is how we keep score, it's how we determine who's winning and who's losing; and for all practical purposes, it's how most(if not all) of us define success, even if we say otherwise.
People will disagree with me and that's fine, I disagree with the above statement myself, but it's undoubtedly true, we do live in a capitalistic society. And if actions speak louder than words(and I think they do), observe what people do, not what they say, then ask yourself why they would do them.
The simplest and most obvious answer has got to be, to "win," to achieve some degree of success, what they consider success.

Observe what people will do(or what they will not do), how they will abandon all moral and ethical standards for the sake of making a buck. I have personally seen people do, at my expense, what I would consider unimaginable things to make money. I'm talking about outright lying, cheating, and stealing; I truly could not believe what was happening, even when I saw with my own eyes, and heard it with my own ears, it was beyond appalling, in fact, I couldn't even comprehend it at the time.
How many people having very little to no money are considered successful? Not many that I can think of.
Maybe this is the best way for me to put it: How many people do you know who aspire to the success of being completely broke and lacking of all money?
And how many people aspire to be super rich?
Now, whether this is happiness is a completely different question.
I guess I'll end with Dale Carnegie: "Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get."

Paul Capps, I live in the U.S
There is lots of different answers, really it's your point of view. If you are what I call a secularist, then it's having lots of followers on Instagram, or be really good looking. Others say it's about the differance you make in the world. I side with the latter.

An unending commitment to success despite multiple failures and losses.
In the United States, everything tends towards growth and progress. That’s the way it is. But if you stop trying, then your personal progress and growth towards success stops.
Never say to yourself in the United States or as an American, “There’s no way I can ever _________.” Fill in the blank with anything: own a home, earn six or seven figures per year, have kids, find my partner in life, and so forth. If you really want it, you can get it in the United States, so long as you never give up.
But it’s so easy to give up, and to think the people who have success were born into it because of their background or ethnicity, therefore what’s possible for some isn’t possible for you. In many countries that’s most likely true, but not in the United States.

There is no single definition. It is dramatically different person to person.
The US is far to big and diverse to answer this without writing a 10,000 word essay.
It must be diverse in your country? Same in the USA.
For some it is as simple of living all your life without involuntary hunger.
For others it is a big house and flashy cars.
For me it is that while I have sometimes not had enough money for all I want, I have always had enough for my needs and for my family. Now at age 66 I am successful because I have no debts and I receive more money, between pensions and investments, every month than I spend.

Chris Mills, lived in The United States of America
If foreigners can still get here and work, then I suggest that a person get at least two jobs to total at least 60 hours each week. Develop a budget so that you are saving the maximum possible. At some point, attend college. I suggest going for something in the medical field. Laboratory Science, all disciplines, is wide open in terms of job opportunities. They are literally begging for people to enter the profession. Once you are working in a profession, continue living on a budget so that you continue to maximize your savings. Do not purchase new cars. Help your children go to college. Create a new generation of successful families. Also, try to have some fun too. It’s a great country.

Kamia Taylor
And the other answers you're received don't respond to the reality that America is a blxing HUGE country where the definition of success can be very different from place to place. In the large urban cities, to a great extent, money and the number of toys you have is the answer. But get outside of it, into more rural areas and say the deep south, and faith, family longevity, skills at surviving on one's own may be the definition of success. Go to certain artsy areas like San Francisco, and being able to survive creatively and keep going while plying one's art is the definition of success.

Nandan Choksi, Tried different careers in a different life.
I'm not sure what you mean by "success." It means different things to different persons.
The US gives you the opportunity to re-make yourself. The educational system is not as rigid as it is in India. Here, in the US, you can get a BA in English, followed by MS in Computer Science and Ph.D. in Business. You cannot do that kind of thing in India. So, the probability that you will find something that you enjoy, is good, all through your life.
You aren't stuck in one field your whole life just because you got a degree in it when you were in your twenties. You are able to grow and develop, constantly. To me, that's success.

Paul Bahre, Systems Support Engineer at Intralot USA
Look for opportunities that are being overlooked by others and figure out how you can take advantage of such opportunities in a profitable manner. Sometimes the jobs that are shunned are the best opportunities for growth and profit potential.

Ronald Salazar, Ph.D.
America is the land of the free and we get to define success ourselves, individually. You can be rich or poor, either doing what you like or not, and call yourself a success or a failure. It's all up to each of us, you and me.
I am a success because I choose to be. Each of the people running for president, for example, would call themselves a success, whatever successes and failures they might have had, because they choose to believe so.

Chirag Patel, Python Developer at Q2ebanking (2015-present)
Success is defined in many different and varied ways by people's perspective.
If one desire and then achieves it's success.

Steve Jobs said
"You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something--your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life."
Making a difference in you about the success and the greed is primarily important to understand.
