When T97 was in development, it was designed for acceptable accuracy, low production cost, short body, and low weight. Users can be trained and use it in a short period of time. It was designed to accept one standard issued mag, and in certain use environment that is different from competition requirement. It may never be as good as AR-15 which is now further developed to accept a wide range of after-market parts and accessories.

Not bad at all. Basically a type 81 scaled down to 5.56 in a bullpup. It also has the gas regulator shut-off - same as "81". Which can turn that into a manual repeater. And the bolt design comes right from AK.
Only major difference from type 81 that I notice -there's no hammer, it's striker fired. Don't know what made them to make it that way (an extra piece that can be lost!), but as a service rifle it definitely suits the purpose.

I just picked one up today and was having an issue with it only shooting single shots, no semi auto. Is that what you were talking about when you said you got used to pulling the mag down when loading it?

The trigger is great imho. Its light at only around 4lb and there its an even travel all the way through with no clear break, meaning that the chances of you jerking the trigger is nonexistent. Its not "terrible", its a different design philosophy that whats common in nato firearms. Youre also reloading it incorrectly with the gen 1. Youre meant to reload with your right arm, not the left. Thats why the button was on the right side.

Norinco did move the safety to near the trigger on the QBZ 95-1 years ago... I guess they just not bother to change the tooling, since Type 97 is for export exclusively.

This one has the same issue as gen 2. The two upper screws will be loose after shooting about 50-100 rounds, that’s why it doesn’t holds zero.

It actually has over-insertion tabs. They're just useless because they sit too high, and they're a bit narrow for PMAG's narrowing front anyway.
Overall I agree, that T97 is fairly reliable (although picky with mags) but is barely passable in terms of ergonomics. They could've put just 10% extra cost/effort into it and make it an actually good rifle, but for some reason don't want to.

I have the gen 3, excellent firearm, very happy. Question, how often are you talking off the top rail and cleaning the gas piston? I have a scope mounted on top and it's a pain to unscrew the top rail with every clean. Plus I'm worried about the screws stripping over time from removing them so much with every clean. Do you take the rail off with every field strip clean, or just do everything else and only do this part once and a while?

I bet if Norinco wasn't banned in America, we'd be able to get these fairly cheap because Norinco used to be cheap as hell to get. An inexpensive bullpup for plixing sounds fun because other than Kel-tec you can't find a cool bullpup to play around with

My buddy has a type 97 ive shot alot and as a lefite, honestly just remeber you're a lefties and keep your face back a bit lol. Ya its slightly inconvenient but I can say after roughly 3000 rounds shot out of it ive only hit myself once from forgetting lol
