British Culture: What things can you do in the UK that you cannot in the USA?

In the UK, you are FREE TO DRINK IN PUBLIC as long as you don’t try to smash someone’s head when you’re drunk, or do anything similar. It makes far more sense to me than American draconian drinking laws.
In the UK, you DON’T HAVE TO TIP the waiters or waitresses because they are paid a decent wage.

In the UK you can laugh about the other country’s choice of president (we don’t have a president, but some of our past prime ministers have got a lot of laughs).
You can pay for an airline ticket, sit in your passenger seat safe in the knowledge that you won't be assaulted, unlawfully arrested and removed from the aircraft just because a member of airline staff wants your seat.
You can walk around happy that you aren’t going to be the victim of a gun crime (unless perhaps you are an inner city teenage enthnic minority gang member out of your area of influence, even so, such a person is far more likely to get stabbed than shot). Many (of the very few) deaths by gunshot are suicides (often of lonely farmers).
You can also live in the UK with a very low risk of being murdered (compared with the USA).
In the UK there is no extra-judicial rendition or torture. The police just slap you around a little bit, off camera, just to make them feel better. Most police officers however are very professional and courteous , unlike the cowboys that you have in the NYPD.
Most police officers do not carry guns here and those that do won’t shoot you just because you are black.

In the UK it is quite reasonable to have the opinion (based on fact supported by evidence of correlation) that very high rates of gun ownership guarantees a high mortality rate from gun crime, because we don’t have a political gun lobby or a national culture of absolute denial.
In contrast, in the USA “guns don’t kill people, only people kill people”.
In the UK it is perfectly acceptable to criticise Israeli foreign policy or politics generally.
You can say please, thank you and sorry all day and people won’t think you are odd or eccentric (it is expected).
In the UK you have FREE quality healthcare according to your immediate medical need rather than according to your ability to pay. If you want to pay for private healthcare here, you will get the same high quality of care, same equipment, often the same doctors, but you will be guaranteed a private room on your own (likely in a private wing or entirely private hospital) and you may be seen a little faster if your procedure is non-emergency, the food will also be far better.
You will live a longer life in the UK on average by almost two years.
In addition, British youngsters have free dental and orthodontic treatment including free braces (if necessary). Dental treatment for adults over 18 is subsidised (if not private) and free if the patient is unwaged. Optician visits/glasses are similarly either free or subsidised according to choice.

Average people in the UK have a much higher rate of success in further education (very few drop out of college or university, for whatever reason).
Graduates do not die of old age with a student debt still outstanding.
You can say a person is “black” without causing offence. Describing a person as “coloured” will cause great offence.
However, we can buy a doormat or toilet roll with a picture of the USA president on it (bet you can’t do the same in the USA). It’s actually supposed to be a joke but I can see how Republicans may view this as an insult.
It is quite acceptable to be atheist and/or humanist in the UK and it may well be to your advantage, it may proffer you greater respect (unlike in the USA where atheists are treated with derision/suspicion).
We have a far better chance of maintaining a healthy bodyweight in the UK (although we are slowly catching up with the Americans in terms of obesity related diseases).
British teenagers can be, well…..teenagers, without being forced to take harmful prescxtion medication or incarcerated in mental hospitals just because they may show a little defiance occasionally.

In the UK, if a boy, you have just over a 95 % chance of avoiding circumcision compared with only about 30 % in the USA.
In the UK you can arrive home to a modern airport. You can also go virtually anywhere using public transport and mostly trains rather than coaches for longer distances. You can also get a train and travel under the sea to another country (France).
You don’t need a car to live in any city.
If you are technically dead, the hospital will turn off the ventilator rather than keep your heart pumping just to extract money from the insurance company for the next 30 years.
In the UK we can obtain a Mobile (cellphone) SIM card (pay monthly or pay as you go) and put the SIM in any phone we chose. We can buy phones separately and without contract (which is far cheaper) and we can have SIM cards without contract. There is much greater freedom of choice. We also don’t pay anything to receive calls.
Woman here can get family planning advice or treatment without risk of being harassed or facing threat of violence just for attending a clinic..

In the USA you are seven times more likely to be incarcerated as a criminal. So criminals in the UK have more chance of having a non custodial sentence (or perhaps shorter sentence) for less serious non-violent offences and a much higher chance of rehabilitation.
You are encouraged to jaywalk in the UK, it is perfectly legal (not highways) and we have a much lower incidence of accidents involving pedestrians and motor vehicles. Don’t ever attempt this on a road with a speed limit above 30 mph.
Without a jaywalking law, drivers have more spacial awareness of pedestrians crossing.
You won’t face the death penalty in the UK (no country in Europe has capital punishment) and very few prisoners here suffer the torture of solitary confinement.
People can legally buy alcohol in pubs/bars at age 18. The legal age for buying cigarettes is also 18.
However, almost 2/3rds of British males and 1/2 of British females aged 17 drink alcohol regularly (at least once per week).
People can buy a huge range of quality beers here that have not been watered down.
In the UK you can smoke a “fag” (slang for cigarette).

In the UK, “pissed” means drunk, “pissed off” means angry, “piss” is (vulgar) urine, “pissing” is urinating. The word can also be used as a (vulgar) intensifier such as “piss awful” or “piss poor” or if raining very heavily “pissing down”.
In the UK we wear trousers (pants), under the trousers men wear pants (boxers, briefs or trunks). Women wear knickers (panties) and tights (pantyhose).
Whatever you do, don’t go outside without wearing trousers or pants, or you will likely get arrested.
In the UK you can drink a “cuppa” (cup of tea). You can also dip your biscuits (cookies) in your cuppa (but not in polite company).
You can buy real chips rather than “french fries” which are loaded with salt.
In the UK you really can buy disgusting risky take-away food if you are less than discerning (or drunk perhaps). If you buy ethnic food and are quite lucky, you might actually be sold the meat that you thought you ordered as stated on the menu. My advice would be to avoid anything that might resemble a rodent curry. There are excellent restaurants but you must pay more than in the USA and do expect an occasional rude waiter if the establishment is expensive (or simply French themed).
Generally speaking, service is better in the USA because there is a higher expectation, Americans are also far better at complaining without feeling embarrassed.

You can buy milk free of puss and other contaminants in the UK (unlike in the USA where dairy cows are force fed antibiotics to promote abnormal, unhealthy growth).
90 % of Uk residents have a drinking water supply that does not contain fluoride.
You can often get on a public bus in London and never hear anyone speak English for the entire journey.
You can wander around without ever having to hear “have a nice day” or “happy holidays”.
You will never see an American flag here or a star spangled bikini or T-shirt.
You can shout “down with USA” or “down with UK” and no one will take any notice.

In the UK you can be a socialist and not get abused.
You could even be a communist, people would just laugh in sympathy (unless you are from China or Cuba).
Girls can play netball at school (a derivative of basketball).
Anyone can play cricket.
Legally drive on the left.
In the UK you have a choice to go to an American coffee shop and drink a tub of mostly sugar, or you can go elsewhere and drink real coffee as it is meant to be prepared.
Your children can attend school without being forced religious doctrine or creationist nonsense.
Equally you have a choice to send your children here to a religious school where they may be taught hatred of non believers, even your daughter may be taught she should not expect that her human rights or legal rights as a female be respected. It is your choice, the government does not legislate with regard to secular or religious education.
We have great comedy in the UK but in many cases you may need to be British to understand it.

“It is quite acceptable to be atheist … in the UK …(unlike in the USA where atheists are treated with derision/suspicion).” The USA is actually rather a large place, with different cultures in different locales. There are indeed places that fit your descxtion, others not so much. For the atheist thing, it wouldn’t be a problem in New York, New England, or West Coast cities, for example.

This is too good. In UK you can have a committee taking over 10 years to examine whether participation in Iraq “conquest’ was right. In US democracy one cant think of even such response to public feeling. In USA the thought of medical bill itself prevents many to have treatment. Thanks for the comparison and contrast.

I think the usual misunderstood jokes are sarcasm based, these can be hard to detect even if English is your first language!

Further to your excellent answer is that prisoners in the UK will not be threatened with the death penalty and will not be at risk of being murdered because the drug which is used to kill you is almost out of date and the prison authorities want to use it all up so as not to waste it.

I have walked around, driven around every state in USA most major cities, & I am 57 years & never been shot at or afraid of the possibility of ot.
I also DO NOT own a gun. But I may IF I wish to.

That’s interesting what you say about ‘please and thank you’. I’ve been watching a lot of US reality shows recently and notice although people say thank you, hardly anyone says please. This fits in with what I see when observing US citizens when on holiday in the Caribbean. When ordering from the bar I heard ‘give me’ and ‘get me’ all the time and it was never accompanied with a ‘please’. A friend’s nephew was married to an American lady and she never said please either! Now that’s a huge cultural difference between the two countries, although I have to admit that sadly here the word please seems to be becoming a thing of the past. For me please and thank you is the very cornerstone of manners.

Get unlimited television with hundreds of channels for just £145.50 a year (the national TV license fee), including all the high-quality advertising-free BBC television and radio, including via Internet. I've lived in several countries, and the British TV system is undoubtedly the best on the planet, and probably the cheapest.
See news reports from all around the world as part of a normal bulletin, even if there are no British people involved.
Watch an advert on the TV knowing that it is completely truthful
Drive forty miles and find people who speak English with a completely different accent / dialect from where you started

Serve as a part-time "special constable" police officer (with full powers of arrest) without getting paid anything for doing it

Use a public right of way across private land, even if the landowner obxts.
Get treated for cancer and other serious medical conditions at public expense, no matter whether you can pay anything or not.
Pay a fixed prescxtion charge of £8.40 per item, no matter what the drug actually costs. And a lot of people don't pay anything at all. The downside is that you can only get things approved by NICE, so some newer or expensive things aren't covered. Also, cheaper drugs are still charged at this fixed price.
Walk into a doctor's office or hospital and get treatment, without anyone asking for insurance or credit card details.
Know that there is zero chance you will be made bankrupt by a health issue.
Have the RIGHT to be baptised, married, and for a funeral in your local (Church of England / Anglican / Episcopal) parish church, even if you don't attend.

Expect to own a front-loading washing machine, which you can pick up second hand for as little as £20, and not have seen a top-loading washing machine since the 1960s.
Not have air conditioning, because if you did have it you would only need it for two weeks a year and it isn't worth the bother.
Marry at 16 (with parental consent in England and Wales, without it in Scotland). There are restrictions which say that a person in authority, such as a teacher, cannot have sex with a person who is under their authority and is 16 or 17 unless they marry them first, but other than that the age of sexual consent is 17 in Northern Ireland and 16 everywhere else. You can own your own flat and live wholly independently from the age of 16, although if you are under 17 and deemed to be in moral danger (i.e. a prostitute or addict) you can be sent back to your parents or into care until you turn 17. At 18 you are fully adult and can do absolutely everything except drive a heavy goods vehicle or own a business which sells alcohol, for which you have to be 21. It used to be that you had to be 21 to be an MP or town councillor and iirc 27 to be a magistrate, but now you can do those at 18 too. For some purposes the voting age is as low as 16.
