Basically, in Europe, any new half decent EV is going to cost you at least €40K. Few people can afford that. Except Norwegians. Which is why EVs have taken off there big time.
I want my next car to be an EV. So I'm going to try to keep my old one going as long as I can, because right now the cost of an EV (even second hand) is prohibitive. I managed to stretch to an electric bicycle though, and have replaced many of my car journeys with that.

In China they also have the “derpmobiles” (my word) or smaller electric vehicles which are not up to par with European regulations.

Which is why EVs have taken off there big time.
Also due to electric cars being tax free (up to about 50 000€, previously unlimited), with regular cars being heavily taxed.

In the US too electric cars are very expensive. Too expensive. It’s great that you got an electric bicycle though, honestly this is the best way to move inside cities: fast, cheap and zero emissions

Jaizoo
If you're looking for zero emissions, just getting a regular ass bike would probably be the better choice over an e-bike. Not like a city will have a lot of hilly terrain that you'll need the motor for anyways.

England
I live in Manchester City centre which is super flat, so I can cycle everywhere. If I lived further out in the city, it’s a lot hillier and I’d struggle. If you lived in Lisbon, Porto or Sheffield, for example, it’s blimming hilly and it would help.

But what the call a car isn't what most Europeans would.
You can get a Chinese "car" on Ali Express for around €1000.

I own Skoda Enyaq and my next car in few months or a year (when markets will calm down a bit) will be a gas car again. Simply because I am refusing to waste my life at a charger. No I can't charge at home.

Rik8367
Modern chargers are incredibly fast. Look it up, you won't have to spend more than 5min at the charging station with the newest generation batteries and chargers

Nuclear-9299
That's a theory. Practically you are lucky if you are charging "only" 30 minutes, usually it is more than an hour.

Getting an electric car without the capability to charge at home is indeed a very weird choice

I wanted to get gas car, but they weren't available and I am refusing to buy used cars (bad experience) so I bought electric car as I was thinking that it can't be that bad. It is bad.

find a faster charger

That's a "stop being poor" level answer.

no , its not. this guy charging with slow charger or lying.

I don't know what is the ratio between electric car prices and salaries in China and the US, however in most European countries (mostly referring to Mediterranean EU and Eastern EU) buying an electric - or even a hybrid - car, is an unachievable goal for the vast majority of citizens.

Manufacturers offer wide range of choices. A cheap-end best seller being the Wuling mini-ev, about 5000 euros. They have cute looking are really popular among young people. On the expensive end the Tesla is of course popular, the BYD is also very popular now.

That box is going to cost 16800 eurs in Portugal (with state subsidies).
With our ever expensive electricity, few charging stations, coupled with the small form factor and terrible autonomy of that car, this price is outrageous.
The average age of the cars in our roads is 15 years. This means that right now, most cars on the road are from 2005. One in each 4 cars is 20 years old.

For a Europe of the Regions!
Which compared to salaries is a slightly worse deal than getting a smart EQ in Germany for around 13k after subsidies - but it's very, very close.
Not sure if this kind of car will make a killing in Europe anytime soon. Cities are gradually moving away from cars and commuters will find these models too small.

OldExperience8252
Where would you buy a Wuling in Europe ? Genuine question.

"Wuling MINI EV is being introduced in the European market as the FreZe Nikrob EV". I also want one but the price is like 13000 euros here.

China has affordable mass market electric vehicles, in Europe they exist to make well of people feel nice.

I've been looking for a new car. It seems that 3 year old e-Golf costs 35k€. WTF? Non-e-Golf would be maybe 17k€. The price difference between is insane. I mean, I can buy a lot of fuel with 17k€....

DocZod
You can get a 7-8 year old bmw i3 for 17k tho.

PadyEos
Romania
They are not comparable as class of vehicle. If someone needs the space and comfort of a hatchback they can't replace that with something as limiting as an i3 and still fill their need.

thrynab
Your calculation is incorrect because the e-Golf likely also holds value much better, so you can sell it for more again.
Not saying 35k is cheap. You still need that kind of money first. But it's like Apple vs Lenovo. Apple Laptops cost 2000€, but after 2 years you can sell them for 1400€. Lenovo Laptops cost 1200€, but after 2 years you can sell them for 300€. Total Cost of Ownership for Apple is 600€, for Lenovo is 900€. Which one is the better choice if you have the 2000€?

ripp102
Italy
Resell value don't matter much in affordable range. You just need a car that can take you from point a to point b. Doesn't make sense to spend 35k when you can get a cheap car brand new from less than 10k. You need that with eletric

scrotomania
This is the stupidest thing ever. So you basically gave to constantly buy and sell stuff to make up for the difference? After I sell the laptop I still have to buy a new one. And why would I want to buy a new car every couple of years?

Flederm4us
In Belgian prices electric saves you at minimum 6 euro per 100km in fuel prices. That's the lowest difference I've seen this year. At the beginning of the Russian invasion it was about 10 euro per 100km.
Over an average car lifespan of 8 years, that means you need to drive 283k km at minimum to break even. That's only about 34000km per year.
And that's only the fuel costs. You also don't pay road taxes and maintenance costs are lower.

thefpspower
Portugal
Are you trying to imply those numbers are good? My 16 year old car has 240k km, has cheap taxes and cheap maintenance (about 500€/year avg).
By your numbers the car would start falling appart before it pays off.

Flederm4us
Belgian numbers, Belgian fuel costs etc.
So if you were Belgian it wouldn't make sense for you to buy an EV. You make way too few km/year to make it worth it.

The problem is that a lot of the big European countries don't make electric cars affordable (in price) and convenient (with charge areas everywhere in urban areas like Norway) enough.
