The reason I’m writing this is because I have some experience with wine. I’ve tasted thousands and thousands of wines in my life. My father started a small wine store in New Jersey. I worked there every day when I was a teen. I started my career as the host of Wine Library TV producing more than 1000 episodes of wine content.
It’s not just about the taste of the wine, It’s how it looks, smells, and feels.

Step 1: Swirl and look
The first thing that I tend to do when looking at a wine is I give it a quick swirl. Always. The swirl is what aerates the wine, and gets all of the different flavors percolating. So I give it a swirl, sometimes on the table, or sometimes in my hand and what I like to do is look at the color. Color is a huge factor in tasting wine.
With a red wine, you’ll look for that really deep, dark purple or red. When you see that, it tends to make you think that there’s a little bit more complexity in the wine, a little bit more flavor.
With white wines, you see that golden color, sometimes you see the “pale white.” Usually, the darker or more saturated the color you see, the more “full-body” or flavorful and dense the wine is.
So that’s always your opening move. Take a look at the color. Do a quick swirl, get the air in, and analyze it.
When analyzing the wine, I tend to like to look at the legs.
The legs of wine are the oily residue that goes around the glass. When you have big legs, you think it’s a more “massive” wine or a wine with more alcohol or a little bit more serious. It’s a very subtle thing I like to do. It kinda tells me where the wine is on a scale of intensity. it’s just a clever little thing.

Step 2: Sniff the wine
The next thing I do is I always give it a quick look inside, and then obviously, one of the most, if not THE MOST important part in tasting wine, is that first initial sniff.
In order to smell wine, I like to put my nose completely into the glass, which, may not be the most “politically correct” thing to do when you are trying to learn how to taste wine at a restaurant, but I’m going to tell you right now, that is the move. It’s the only way to smell wine.
Now, don’t get silly or you will just start choking, suddenly alcohol and the sugars are going to get into your nose, and it will be a very unpleasant experience. But you give it a very serious sniff. I sometimes go back to the whirl, then back into the sniff. Just from that little swirl in between those two sniffs, more flavor came in. So the more you can swirl it, the more you can sniff it. When you first give it that smell, you’re really just looking for those subtle flavors that you may have not been able to sense otherwise.
The smell is just so important. A lot of people don’t take “smell” into account at all, and it’s a huge mistake and it’s one of the factors why you’re not tasting some of the flavors that you’ve read about or you hear me mentioning.

Step 3: Taste the wine
To really taste wine, you have to slosh it in your mouth.
It’s bringing oxygen into your mouth field, into your palate while you’re tasting the wine, it lets some of the alcohol get out and more of the flavor kind of to stay in the fruit. It’s a crucial move. You want the air is because it coats your palate, allowing your tongue to hit as many flavors as possible. It’s going to help you taste all of the different flavors in wine and give you a complete feel for the wine.
That initial blast of flavor from the wine is very crucial because that’s that upfront fruit, and it’s your first impression. You know, it’s like a first date.
It’s your very first impression it’s like, “Hey, this is what it is.” When you’re swirling in your mouth and you’re getting the flavors in, and then you go into your swallow or your spit, you’re really tasting for a mid-palate, and this is a term a lot of people don’t understand.
The best way to describe the mid-palate is the transition of flavors you’re tasting in between the first taste and that final taste. You’re going to really taste it as you’re swallowing on your palate. Now a lot of times, you won’t taste anything, and that’s because many wines are made very hollow, meaning there’s really only two flavors.
The really complex, interesting wines, and the wines that are enjoyable to me, wines like this that are better than what they’re priced at, have that exotic, interesting mid-palate, that extra flavor.
It’s a three-flavor process. It’s that initial blast when you’re tasting it as it’s swirling in your mouth as you’re about to go, and then when you spit or swallow the wine, that final flavor. It’s a three-step process for me, and that’s really how I like to taste wine.

Step 4: Bring it all together
One of the final things I like to do is after I taste, I go right back to the smell.
It ties in all the flavors. You can get so much flavor from smelling the wine then tasting it and then back into the smell. It’s really kind of the pattern I like to stay in, it helps me put everything together and get that final flavor that I’m looking for.
If there is one thing you leave within your how to taste wine checklist, it’s to use your nose. Get into it. A lot of people just swirl and then get right into drinking and tasting. Obviously, by the finish, you’re going to know something about the wine, but focus on the nose, focus on the mid-palate, and I think you’re going to be well on your way to tasting wine in a different way!

My first piece of advice is to embrace the thrill of tasting something new or something newly recognizable - it should never go away, but the experience changes the longer you taste and study. I’d bet many of the pros on this page would agree that there is a certain nostalgia for tasting wines the way you do now - full of wonder and curiosity and lessons to learn.

Taste! Taste! Taste! The best way to learn and familiarize yourself with lots of different wines, regions, and varietals is to drink them.
That being said, you obviously won't learn a whole lot by slugging back glass after glass alone. Here are a list of ways to taste a variety of wines:
1) Find a local wine shop that offers a large variety of wines from various regions and buy a mixed case. Read the descxtions or ask a salesperson for recommendations form various regions. Only pick up stuff that fits with your price range. As you try each bottle, take a moment to look up some facts about the wine region in a wine book, Atlas or online.
2) Find a wine shop or wine bar that offers a variety of tastings. Be adventurous and non-judgmental. Try wines you know little to nothing about. You may be surprised by your tastes . Many people have told me over the years: "I never thought I'd like a Rose" or "I don't even like white wine, but this is great!"

What's the best way to learn something?
An old teacher of mine told me a story that stuck with me the rest of my life:
A pottery teacher split her class into two halves.
To the first half she said, "You will spend the semester studying pottery, planning, designing, and creating your perfect pot. At the end of the semester, there will be a competition to see whose pot is the best".
To the other half she said, "You will spend your semester making lots of pots. Your grade will be based on the number of completed pots you finish. At the end of the semester, you'll also have the opportunity to enter your best pot into a competition."
The first half of the class threw themselves into their research, planning, and design. Then they set about creating their one, perfect pot for the competition.
The second half of the class immediately grabbed fistfulls of clay and started churning out pots. They made big ones, small ones, simple ones, and intricate ones.
At the end of class, both halves were invited to enter their most perfect pot into the competition. Once the votes were counted, all of the best pots came from the students that were tasked with quantity. The practice they gained made them significantly better potters than the planners on a quest for a single, perfect pot.
In life, the best way to learn a skill, is to make a lot of pots.

I've learned most of what I know about wine by tasting... especially going tasting at wineries, ordering wines by the glass in restaurants, parties, etc. But I think the most I learned about wine in a concentrated effort was by reading the book "Drink This: Wine Made Simple" by Dara Grumdahl http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0345511654 If I hadn't already tasted most of the wines she talks about, I'd have done the tasting exercises, too. I read them all and could follow along pretty well based on memory which to me was a testament to her knowledge of the varietals she talked about.
Sometimes our inertia gets in our way of learning new things, especially if it involves a trip to the wine store where you can feel intimidated and overwhelmed as a novice. One way to get exposure to different wines is to join a wine club (or two or three). Often people join winery wine clubs because they love a producer's wine so much, but you can also join a "retail" wine club where a wine store sends you top sextions at less-than-retail prices. I'm a huge fan of drinking wines with knowledgable friends who can share their opinions, and their palates. Comparing notes about what you smell and taste with experienced people adds a lot of value. Especially if one of them is a sommelier (and one of the group I taste with is a certified sommelier).
I also like to read books extensively, and one I'd recommend highly is What to Drink with What you Eat because it talks about food and drink pairing, explaining why things work together or not - and it has interviews and quotes with many sommeliers, restaurant owners and chefs. There are a variety of wine references - The Wine Bible, Sotheby's book on wine, and others - some are simple and others are very deep. Pick the level you like. The Windows on the World wine course is an easy introduction for instance.
In addition, I also love to search for the wine name and year and then read the online retailer's wine reviews, which often also have the reviews from wine maker, from Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, and others. No cost, and occasionally you also find a retailer who you want to purchase wine from online! You can do the same with cellartracker.com and read MANY reviews by non-professionals. I review many of the wines I taste there for instance, as well as on my own wine blog.

There is a lot of information to be known about wine, despite it being rather confusing.
Here is some practical advice:

There are thousands of facts about wines, their regions and histories. Wine is considered one of the oldest known alcoholic beverages of our existence. I would recommend you stop by a local wine bar or wine store and check out a local wine tasting to see what wines you like and dislike. Learn about the specific wines you prefer and start from there.

The simplest way ….. is not by just reading but by doing. But it is expensive!
So begin by buying wine. Find out what you like and - every bit as important - share that bottle with friends over a meal. Have them bring one bottle each to the meal. You may not drink all of each - not so much an issue as they can take the leftovers home. Don’t worry about what people say, drink what you like. Over time your tastes will develop (note, not change, develop), but thinking about each wine as you open it , with food and that sharing.

There are so many books on wine - probably tens of thousands for it is a subject that has fascinated mankind for 2,000 years or more. The Greeks wrote about it, then the Romans. However, wine didn’t always taste - then - as it does today.
There is a video tasting series by James Suckling - which I think would be a good place to start. Have a look at that. It doesn’t talk down to people nor go off into flights of fancy.
