Successful people have no secrets. They have discipline. They act with rationality. They are not moved by impulsive emotions.
Example:
Successful people don’t believe in luck. They believe in hard work. My grandfather used to say, “Work hard and you will be lucky.”
My father always reminds me, “ Son, never forget that the tortoise wins the race!” Successful people don’t gamble. They play it safe, slow, and steady.
My self-made millionaire friend who is also a VC, loves to challenge young entrepreneurs with a very simple question, “Are you creating memories or a business?” He uses this question to distinguish between those who are having fun spending investors’ money and those who have the discipline to make money.
What everyone of them have in common is a stubborn perseverance — they will simply never quit. They fail and get up again and again and again until they win. #NeverGiveUp

To succeed in life you need to try. Trying usually gets you nowhere but if you keep at it, you keep trying in all aspects of your life, it will make you succeed in ways you never imagined possible.

How did you become successful?
I didn’t get research funding in grad school. I spent nine quarters as a teaching assistant.
Normally, PhD students resent teaching, since it takes time away from research. But I got really into it. I figured if I was getting paid to teach, I might as well do a good job.
So I went all-in on teaching. I was head TA twice, won the “outstanding TA bonus” four times, and won both the Forsythe Teaching Award and the Centennial TA Award. I also taught my own algorithms class (you can check out my lecture notes here!)
While I was teaching my class, I got pinged by a Facebook recruiter. The interviews were easy because all the algorithms content was fresh in my head. After I graduated, I joined full-time and started working on machine learning.
My manager knew I loved teaching. Within 6 months I was given a new grad to mentor. A year later, I was leading a small team.
A year after that, I switched teams internally, and because I had the leadership experience, I got a lead role on the new team too.
Richard Wiseman did a study about why some people are luckier than others. According to Richard, lucky people are relaxed and open to opportunities, while unlucky people fixate on a few things they want in life (and may or may not get).
If my success criteria was being a top researcher, then I failed miserably. I finished my PhD with two papers, and became a software engineer.
But there are many right answers in life — many ways to get ahead. Opportunities are everywhere, if you know how to use them.
I am the luckiest person I know.

Mr. Henry Ford woke up early one morning with a paper in his hand.
He had an idea for a V8 engine design on paper. He called his team of engineers into his office and discussed the idea with them.
“Mr. Ford, it’s impossible to cast an eight-cylinder gasoline engine block in one piece,” said one of his top engineers.
“Produce it,” Ford replied in a strong voice.
“But you don't understand, Sir,” they replied, “it’s impossible!”
“Stay on this job until you succeed no matter how much time is required,” Ford demanded.
The engineers were scared.

What's the best parenting advice?
The best parenting advice I ever got didn’t come from another parent. It wasn’t even about parenting. Nonetheless, I’ve used this advice every single day of my 10+ years of parenting, and it’s the most valuable tool in my toolkit.
When I was pregnant with my eldest son, I was reading through some old Reader’s Digest magazines, and came across one of those cute, funny stories used as place-fillers at the end of an article. It went something like this:
Our last pet had passed away, so we bought a new kitten. The first day we had her at home, she started sharpening her claws on the side of the couch—as kittens do—so my dad picked her up and put her outside. Fifteen years later, she still claws the side of the couch every time she wants to go out.
This story is my guiding beacon as a parent.
Every moment of every day, you are teaching your children something. With every single thing you say, do, or don’t do, you are teaching your children what they should say, do, and not do. The trick, as a parent, is not to teach your children the right things; the trick is to know what you’re teaching them.

The best parenting advice I ever got didn’t come from another parent. It wasn’t even about parenting. Nonetheless, I’ve used this advice every single day of my 10+ years of parenting, and it’s the most valuable tool in my toolkit.
When I was pregnant with my eldest son, I was reading through some old Reader’s Digest magazines, and came across one of those cute, funny stories used as place-fillers at the end of an article. It went something like this:
Our last pet had passed away, so we bought a new kitten. The first day we had her at home, she started sharpening her claws on the side of the couch—as kittens do—so my dad picked her up and put her outside. Fifteen years later, she still claws the side of the couch every time she wants to go out.
This story is my guiding beacon as a parent.
Every moment of every day, you are teaching your children something. With every single thing you say, do, or don’t do, you are teaching your children what they should say, do, and not do. The trick, as a parent, is not to teach your children the right things; the trick is to know what you’re teaching them.

When you’re bigger than someone, you can control their environment and there’s nothing they can do about it.
If you’re running late to get to an important event and you happen across a car that’s broken down, so you stop and help the driver, you might worry that you’re teaching your children that punctuality doesn’t matter. (You may also worry that you’re inadvertently teaching them a variety of swear words as you get on your way once more!)
But what you may actually be teaching your children is that:
The well-being of people is more important than any single event.
All people matter—even people you don’t personally know.
Helping people is the right thing to do.
Often we don’t know what we’re teaching our kids until after they’ve learned it, but this “advice”, such as it is, helps me be more mindful in the moment of the lessons I’m teaching. And, most importantly, it allows me to reflect back on when and how I taught the behaviour I’m seeing in my children.
If your children—especially small children—are behaving in ways you don’t like, it’s not because they’re not good at learning, or they’re not paying attention, or you need to discipline them more; it’s because you’re accidentally teaching them the wrong things.
Stop trying to change them. Start changing yourself.
Otherwise, in fifteen years, they’ll still be clawing the side of the couch when they want to go outside.
