Japan always had quite conservative and xenophobic tendencies along with overprotective economic policies which often hindered its own growth but Japan have pretty much already reached its plateau, theres not much room for growth specially with declining population and saturated market as a result low inflow of FDI but Japan actually ranks 15th in total FDI recepient list (ahead of SKorea, Russia),. Also Japan itself is one of the biggest foreign investor and most investors prefer to invest in developing economies.

Those do NOT matter to international capital. Japan is developed and has a shrinking market. Why would any country invest in such an economy when many countries are growing rapidly? It's pool of talented labor is ageing, it's geographically isolated and entering Japan is often risky because you're competing against local companies who often know the market better than foreigners.

It is not much different from Korea, where foreigners also just guests. Foreigner would never be a part of society. Both Korea and Japan are not countries for talents to imigrate to. Korea is more xenophobic, might be in Japan people also xenophobic but at least they are polite.

I've lived and worked in Japan for 6 years, speak good Japanese, and I just don't feel this at all. Everyone I know -- in my company, my friends, and my Japanese relatives, don't treat me as a "guest." I feel more at home here, than I ever did in the U.S.

To be fair, you are a guest. They know and you know you have no loyalty to it. And that if shit hit the fan, you can always choose to leave. No matter how welcoming they are to you, in their eyes they know that you still have your own home country and in the end is not one of them. And that fact will never truly change. Nationalism still play a huge role in Asia.

I have long loved Japan, and still do. I admire their collectivism and ability to maintain their culture for so many years. However, population decline combined with xenophobic mindset is going to hinder them in the long run.
