Japan & Germany had been rich since before WW2. More than 80% of Japanese could have read and write in 17th century. So Japan could have accomplished Meiji Restration. (Turkey or Qing were much richer but couldn’t modernize themselves so they were invaded and colonized by the Western Imperials).

To say the truth no one really know how this economic miracle came to be! I live in Japan and I asked my Japanese friends many times they dont seem to know either. Maybe it is a combination of many factors, maybe it is the culture?

I’m a believer that Japan’s policy of supporting export industries is one of the reasons they have been able to get rich. As far as I am aware, South Korea and Taiwan employed similar policies. Export oriented Industrialization seems to work.

honestly as an African i really am sad to know that other countries that bad things happen to them in the past yet still succeed. it does anger me a lot when i hear the success stories of Asian countries going from poor to rich in such a short period of time.I personally don't blame the world for not taken African people seriously. I wasn't mad when Trump said African nations are shitholes because its true and no amount of outrage is going to change that until these African leaders can do something in there countries and stop these corruption.

International politics and economy plays a huge role though. Lots of Western and even some Asian governments and companies leech off African countries and keep them from achieving their full potential! Also Japan received lots of help after the war while African countries received very little help after colonialism ended other than humanitarian aid (which has been shown to actually keep economies down). Many African countries STILL to this day have to pay colonial taxes to France decades after independence. There is definitely hope though, countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Botswana, Ethiopia and Rwanda are growing extremely fast and I wouldn't be surprised if what happened in East Asia in the last decades happens in these countries. Remember many rich countries in Asia were extremely poor just a few decades ago!

@Tahseen while I agree but India is still poor as whole, not much differnce between India and africa right now. Africa is currently having the fastest growing economies in the world and that's going to continue for the next few decades.

Don't feel ashamed for being an African. We are all Africans. East Asian countries have a tradition of prioritizing education and snub religions. They are like that due to luck. It's pure luck that ancient Chinese had Confucius and his followers controlling politics. If China worshiped religions like Arabs, Japan would have picked up a different culture.
