The Odyssey - because of the great influence it has had over all of European (or better say broadly and vaguely Western) literature and culture. And because it’s essentially a celebration of humanity and human wits and creativity.
The Bible - I hate sounding like every other Hollywood star, but here it is - defo one of the greatest books out there because of how much of it stands at the origin of our culture.
Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov - probably due to my research interest in narratives. Nabokov is a master of narration. Manipulation of sympathy through the power and beauty of language at its best.
Animal Farm by George Orwell - as a reminder of something we tend to forget more than ever in the last decade.
Voilà my list of worthwhile reads. Initially, I thought about it as a list of books to read before you die, but it’s more like a list of books to read before you live. There’s lots of wisdom and useful knowledge in them. And obviously, there are plenty more which could (should) be added. Hope you enjoy them if you haven’t already :)

I really love the works of Isabel Allende. Loved the House of the Spirits, and the Island under the Sea. It just spoke to me, somehow? Her words are descxtive, vivid, and they took me on a journey. One moment I turned the page, another moment the page had disappeared and I was riding the lonely wide plains of Argentina. A few more pages in and even a naturally blue-haired girl made all the sense in the world…
It’s that special brand of magical realism many of the Latin literary masters seem to excel in. You’re reading, and you’re sort of scratching your head in the beginning but not for long — before you know it, you’re in it, and that’s exactly how I love my books. Are they the best books of all time? I’m not sure. Probably not. There are a LOT of great books out there. But they struck me, and they stayed with me, somehow. Life is kind of magical, sometimes. If you’re light enough to feel it and quiet enough to observe it. It’s rare to find someone who can put that into words.
I’ve read many books by many authors and I’ve enjoyed most of them thoroughly — the ones I did not enjoy a chapter or more into the tale, I did not finish. Somehow the works of Isabel Allende stayed with me the most strongly. I’ve never been in her country and while I would not fancy myself an expert in any way… I somehow feel, as if I’ve been there. It’s a special type of writer that can leave you with that impression.

I will list the ten “best” books as the ones that changed my way of thinking—and not necessarily the ones I enjoyed the most, or even the ones I reread the most often.
Les Misérables; when I was 15, reading this book altered my perception of rules and law and what constitutes justice. I read it while weeping with empathy, knowing it used that emotional appeal, and still, it opened a door in my mind and heart into a worldview that had room for forgiveness and grace alongside justice.
To Kill a Mockingbird; the book credited with motivating the civil rights movement showed me something of what love is, how ugly hatred really is, and the dark underbelly of my country. It motivated me to see and support change.
The Art of Reasoning; I have a natural inclination to be both logical and analytical, but this book helped me take that to another level.
Evidence that Demands a Verdict; the first of a long line of its kind, it has inspired many imitators, and while it may no longer stand as the best among the more modern books in this category, it remains the book that began the evidence and faith movement. It opened my eyes to a world of questions as reasonable—and perhaps answerable.

The Formation of a Persecuting Society; written back in the 80’s, no one has disproved its theory since. It asserted that the rise of secularism and the centralization of power is what caused the terrible persecution of the middle ages, (including that which took place abetted by the church), that the secular state was the leader in persecution as a method, and continues as such today long after the church ceased persecuting people, closed its Inquisitions, and disbanded its troops. This contradicted the commonly held hypothesis that the church was the sole or even the primary source of this evil.
The Western Humanities; offers a view of history from the perspective of individual human input rather than the perspective of large wave events such as war and politics where the individual is lost in the scope. Studying history this way made me realize all history is really the history of individuals. We miss that because it’s easier for us looking backwards to deal with broad sweeps—not because that’s the way it really would have happened. All history is a record of individual decisions.

The History of Christianity; like so many out there I thought I knew—then I learned I knew nothing. This was actually one of my text books, published by Oxford University, since I went to a secular school, and it completely changed my understanding of Christianity and western culture.
Sophie’s World; is a layman’s introduction to philosophy which I bought for my children and liked so much (skipping the intro about God) that I have bought versions and given them away to many.
The Bible; this is the book that actually changed my life, my values and point of view on most everything. I was upside down and it turned me right side up.
These are books that helped form the foundation of my worldview. There are others that have had powerful input as well—my first introduction to Physics—the Rise of Christianity by Stark, The Hunchback of Notre Dames, books on suffering, character development, and the value of redemptive suffering, but while they were impactful, these ten were foundational for who I am and what I believe. For me that makes them “best.”

Some days back I had argument with one of my family member. Don’t know why but I was unable to come out of that incident. Whole day I used to think about the possible outcomes, if and what not.
Finally I decided to stop this all and divert my mind towards something else. Then I remembered that I have a book kept in my luggage
I thought of giving it a try. And to my surprise I became addicted to the book. Though a self help book is suppose to read in longer span of time so that you can derive the ideas in your life. I read that book madly and completed it within 3 days.
Trust me my mind completely diverted from current scenarios of family to personal growth.
I started thinking that what I can do best to improve my life. And how to do it using available resources. Though I am still unable to fully apply those concepts in my life but I am now much happier and constantly thinking something constructive like writing this answer…

The three best books that I think I have read till now are as follows:
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green: This is one of the best young adult fiction I have ever read. The story of Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters will keep you hooked till the end. I have read this book four times and I still cannot get enough of it. I would definitely suggest to all the book readers and even who are beginners. This is actually a great book to start with.
2. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini: Khaled Hosseini is a brilliant writer and all the books written by him are amazing and amongst those three books, this is my favourite one. The Kite Runner is a story of a boy named Amir, from Kabul and his closet friend Hassan.This story is set during the time of fall of the Afghanistan’s monarchy by the Soviet army intervention, the exodus of all those refugees to different countries like Pakistan and United States and the rise of regime of Taliban.
3. The Oath of the Vayuputras by Amish Tripathi: The third book in the Shiva Trilogy and one of the finest novels ever written by Amish Tripathi. A must read book for all the mythological fiction lovers out there.

Last year, I read a book named "Zero to One" by Peter Thiel and Blake Masters. And its starting line was so inspiring. I really love this book.

Up until about a year ago, my favorite book was To Kill a Mockingbird. I taught it to my honors classes when I was still teaching. However, last year I kept seeing all of these glowing reviews about a book, The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. At the time is had been rated as 4.9 by over 20,000 reviews on Amazon. It was not my usual genre of choice, but I decided that it must be something special for such a unified view that the book was nothing short of amazing.
From page one I was hooked. I read it instead of eating, sleeping, watching tv etc. I loved it and never wanted it to end. As I read, I cried, laughed and looked up pictures of the setting in the South of France to understand the geography as I read.
I can’t say enough good things about this book. From breathtaking to heartbreaking settings to heroic bravery and risk taking, Nightingale is a about love, endurance, and strength. It is about having the kind of strength to get through things you never believed you could.

I've only read it once many years ago. However it still haunts me. It's set in a bleak windswept countryside. There are no violets and daisies to lighten the mood. The protagonists have all died and all that remains is the mark they left on the people. It is these people that tell the story.
It's a love story. A story about how love can affect people in ways that are not always good. It's characters are deeply flawed and downright unlikable. The harshness of the landscape is reflected in their attitudes and behaviours. Yet the longing and yearning in them both is an undercurrent that drives the narrative. As much as their characters are unlikable, you want them to unite. It's as though, if they did, much of the bleakness would be overcome and the darkness would lift. However, that's not what happens, and the consequences ripple through the years. Many people suffer and are brought to ruin. Then eventually, the scars of the past are forgotten. New lives eventually spring up in that barren wasteland of past misery, and they bring a new hope. A new love story is begun, and you can't help feeling that what could have been has finally come to pass. It's as if the long cold winter had finally given way to the flowers of spring. It brings lightness, promise, and closure to a sad history. You can't help wish that had things gone otherwise, all the misery could have been avoided. The closure feels good, but a lingering thought of what could have been remains. We still can't help but feel for our flawed protagonists because they loved each other. They stay with us, although life has finally moved on…
The novel is of course, Wuthering Heights.
