I am from Austria and I'm voting for Austria. I grew up in Graz. I have an Indian mother and an Austrian father and that's why i look a little darker than white. What do most Austrians think when they see me? That I'm an immigrant, a foreigner. I have been in many situations where people would start to whistle at me or whisper something like “Scheiss Ausl?nder…” (shitty foreigner). One time, a bus driver didn't want to take my money and he checked if it was fake (!) Another time a bartender didn't want to change my money because I'm not white. I have a friend from Graz and he is a white man, with black hair and black eyes and people think that he's a foreigner. The list goes on and on and on. I know that there is racism everywhere in the world. But I'm still voting for Austria.

I went to Cologne in Germany and with six other persons of Asian decent and we stopped the bus and started boarding. As we started the drives looked at us g contemptuously and as the last person to board entered the bus (who was pregnant) could sit he moved off the bus stop by releasing the clutch harshly and she fell!
He showed no concern or compassion as pretended not to speak English!
We were in Germany for three days only and I would never return to that country because there is nothing to offer there except arrogance and hostility! Most think we are thieves and savages in my opinion!

What really interests me is that the very same people, in US all of a sudden become so cordial towards minorities.

Black French
Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong or Singapore are prosperous and have high levels of education and they are still wary of foreigners.
Conflating tolerance and those factors is quite naive.

In my opinion and from my experience Romania, Poland and other East European countries are very racist…

If you’re from Austria how come your English is so good?

Haha, thank you! That's because my teacher was very good!

I have never met an Austrian person in person. However the Germans I have known all spoke perfect English. Even better than some of our native born Americans. And I don’t mean American Indians.

almost everbody speaks good english in Europe

You’re probably right about that. My hat is off to the Europeans who learn to speak English even though it is not their native language.

This is an interesting question. I am Jewish-Italian-English and grew up near London.I have lived in Italy, England and Portugal (over 2 years in each) and have visited a fair amount of Europe. From my experiences Eastern Europe and at times Southern Europe is more racist to black people. However don't think the situations of Europe of Northern Europe are happy clappy. As some one with an Italian mother and semi-Jewish father I experienced people telling me to go back to my own country, people on the street calling me a dog/animal and people telling me that Italy is cheap. I can't even imagine how much worse this would have been for a pole or someone from Eastern Europe. One time my mum and I were talking in Italian in a shop and the manager came up to us to tell us that when you are in England you speak English . Truth be hold people in England and much of Northern Europe don't think of this sort of behaviour as being racist .

I would like to react to the fact that several answers here state that Czech Republic is the most racist country based on some surveys.
Firstly, CZR is cca 99,5 % white. The remaining 0,5 % are Gypsies and Vietnamese. Meeting a black person is a rare occasion, even in Prague, where I live. So if you are asking people “how do you feel about having a black neighbour” you can′t be surprised about the answer. People fear what They do not know. I wonder how different the answer would be if the question was “how do you fell about having a Vietnamese neighbour”. I am almost 100 % sure the result would be much less racist.

That said, you can still make a pretty convincing case about racism in CZR based on experience and other arguments. I am only saying that making such statement based on flawed surveys is a big piece of crap. Racism is everywhere and comparing where is it worse is not an easy thing. One factor could be racially motivated violence - which is very rare here, CZR being 7th most safe country in the world. So if you are foreigner you do not have to be afraid coming here…

I just came back from Slovakia. I traveled with a black lady, we also went to Russia and Kazakhstan together. I would say that we didn’t notice any racism towards her, not in Slovakia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Hungary, etc. . We also noticed that the Vietnamese community is well integrated. Now as to gypsies… a lot of crude racism noticeable everywhere. These people still live in incredibly poor conditions(we visited Lunik 9 in Kosice, it looks worse than many parts of Africa), even though they live in Slovakia for over 500 years. I think when you read such statistics and studies you should keep this in mind. The racism in Central Europe and the Balkans is almost exclusively directed against gypsies. I noticed a tiny bit of antisemitism as well, but nothing overwhelming.

I live in Belgium, we also have problems with certain communities. (and we also have Slovakian gypsies who recently migrated here) I wouldn’t call the Western European multicultural project successful. The evidence is that for example in Belgium according to the most recent polls 1 third would vote for an openly racist party. So I think we are not in a position to give lessons to countries like Slovakia.

I think the communists tried their best giving them employment and apartments. (which they ruined), it didn’t succeed. However, in countries such as Russia or Kazakhstan they did succeed, gypsies there are well integrated and their social standing is above the average. You wouldn’t recognize them from an ethnic Russian except for their darker skin. Maybe it’s due to the extremely harsh Stalin policies in the 30s and the 50s, which anyway can’t be repeated in the 21th century. I don’t know the answer.

Finally I think the mutual hatred in Central Europe and the prejudices need to reduce. Maybe trying to go for ethnic balance and spreading the gypsies to other neighborhoods is a solution. I know this really helped in the Netherlands. Another thing is that, since I look Russian, and speak Russian (sometimes the only language left if no one speaks any English or German) I also encountered some prejudice. The lady of the hostel in Kosice told me openly that she doesn’t accept Ukrainian guests. (“they are messy like gypsies”).

There is lack of Colleges in Slovakia and education for people over 26years old is not free. Another problem is that there is not much of social housing in Slovakia. This country is far away from being a great or even a good country. In Slovakia you are either poor or rich as middle class is disappearing.

Gypsie women giving birth in very young age, in most cases they are like 30 years old and they having like 7 kids on average. They are in most cases uneducated (many of them have not even finished a secondary or primary school).

I think many of them could get a jobs in craft . You cannot expect much from them as they don't have many to improve their lives (courses, education etc) .

Only solution for this is to provide them with right education so they can learn useful skills that would lead to them getting a jobs. This should be responsibility of the country at first hence.

Jan Jurní?ek
Some of them are musical virtuosos and live in luxury. But not everyone can be a musical virtuoso. It would be best if most of them at least learned the craft (I've already seen a gypsy car serviceman, and it's already a prestigious, highly skilled and well-paid job). Many of them work as diggers. If the poorest qualified for masons and built houses for their own money and with their own hands, they would not devastate them. But they would have to want that and have an example to follow to believe it is possible.

I thing Germany, I was traveling in Europe like any other tourist paying same amount . But in buses, train stations , some police come and collect our passport and check whist other white people are left free. Because I am brown, When they come to Sri Lanka were well treated. Very bad.

I am totally confused at the question. America, Canada, Australia, Europe are all expected NOT to be racist. They are expected to accommodate who are arriving as economic immigrants and provide them housing, jobs, medicare, and every other facility. All these host countries must share the fruits of their centuries of labour with those who have just landed and even if there is a murnur it is considered RACIST. Very strange definition. It is like a hungry lion hunts and the prey is stolen by hyenas. But hyenas are good and the lion is bad.

Let us look at the other side. Middle East is the richest geographical location on earth. Apart from the Arabs, even if you live there for 50 years and contribute maximum to their economy, science, education, technology are you allowed even a Permanent residency or citizenship? Is that racism or you have any special word for that? How about China, Japan? Racism is applicable only to a set of people. Tolerance must be practiced only by one set of people. If you are reluctant to share fruits of hard labour with new arrivals, depriving of your own children, it is Racism. Islamic immigrants in Europe have establushed No Go Zones, but that is acceotable. Questioning that or trying to remove that is intolerance and Racism.

I am not refering to the blacks in the USA. They have luced in the US fir mode years than most White Americans. They are an integral and inseparable part of the USA and what gappened to George Floyd is unpardonable and unacceptable. My point is mire oertaining to Europe. We cannot brand them as racist. They built their nations over centuries and they have a right to live the way they like. Nobody can question them.
