During the period of imperial china, keeping beard were the fashion. If we look at the terracotta warriors and drawings of Chinese emperors. They were all generally depicted with a beard and moustache. After 1911 Xin Hai revolution when the Republican overthrew the Imperial system. A beard was seen as a disgusting, keeping a moustache was the fashion. You might note that all the famous men; Sun Yat Sen, Chiang Kai Shek, Lu Xun and all the freaking warlords of the Republican period were rocking a moustache. No beards though.

Yes there is a cultural and political history.
In Confucian culture it was considered taboo to cut your hair as it was disrespectful to your parents. If you look at any picture of any male from classical China they all have long hair and beards.

However because this tradition was so closely related to feudalism after the May 4th movement being clean shaven was seen as being Western, modern, and progressive.
If you look at Sun Yat-Sen and Chiang Kai-Shek they all had some facial hair because have a mustache says you are modern but also a little traditional. I mean it's not as if you were a communist revolutionary.

But if you are a revolutionary communist you don't want any if this backward tradition stuff so few of the CCP leaders have facial hair.

In fact, in China about 35 years ago, there were many men with beards. At that time, the Chinese were still in the early days of the reform and opening up era (started in 1978). Commodities, cultures and visual aesthetics from abroad rarely affect the Chinese.

There are three reasons for this phenomenon:
The real situation in the 1980s was that people needed to shave their beards to keep their beards clean, but urban workers were only paid about 80-100 yuan per month, and most of them needed to be used for food, clothing and necessary social activities, and they had no purchasing power to get face care. such as Tools and lotions.

Barbershops at the time offered shaving services, but many men only went to barbershops to shave on big days or before social events. I think this situation is common in many countries.

In the 1990s, with the bombardment of a lot of TV commercials and the spread of hygiene common sense (a thick beard and not paying attention to cleaning can easily spread digestive tract and skin diseases), many people can afford electric shavers, people who do not have a lot of social activities Also began to shave regularly. But at this time in the countryside, the habit of not shaving beards is still maintained when it is not necessary. If you observe Chinese villagers in the 1990s or crowded train stations, you will see many people with beards.

In the past 20 years, with the development of commodity economy, merchants advocate consumerism, Chinese men no longer only consume and use razors (electric), more young people will use facial cleanser, mouthwash, and even make-up and spray men perfume. In order to gain an advantage in visual and olfactory effects in the social competition of young people.

I don't think the trend of overly grooming one's appearance and face without developing and showing masculinity or even reproductive advantage -:) is a good change.
The modern Chinese government has launched an initiative against the "girly-man".

Granted it has been a long time since I went to Chin and neither did I put much attention on it, but if I consider those in my family or relatives. I would say that our beards simply doesn’t grows that much.

For example I would have something closer to this picture, but less dense and with a few patches without beard. While the rest of my relatives have probably even less. So personally I tends to shave it.
As for if it’s a customs, there is probably also a preference for no beard (or at least most of the singers/idols doesn’t seems to have any)
But no, there isn’t any kind of prohibition, particularly since there are Chinese how grows their beard.

First of all, hipster culture doesn’t exist in China. Second, Chinese usually have very little body hair, hence beards don’t look good on many. Third, beards are often considered low-class.

It’s mainly genetic. Also beards and mustaches on young men are seen as negative — that is to say facial hair is associated with thieves, beggars, and foreign “barbarians”. However old Chinese men sometimes grow thin wispy beards, and wear traditional gray Chinese robes, and then are seen as “wise honorable sages”.

Ancient Chinese people grew beards. In the romance of the Three Kingdoms, generals broke into the palace and killed all those who did not grow beards, because only eunuchs did not grow beards.

There is also a saying in China that "父在不留须" ,It means growing a beard will make you look more mature than your father.

Genetics.
Most of us simply can’t grow a full beard out. The worldwide norm is that unless you grow a full face beard, you maintain a well-shaved look instead.

Mainly the DNA.
Chinese men tend to have less facial hair comparing to their western counterparts.
However, Chinese men do retain head hair longer thus there are fewer balding Chinese men.

Because it is simply inconvenient and dirty. Imagine you eat food and you have long beard, you will need to pay extra attention not to get your beard dirty everytime u eat and cleanning up your beard everytime. People there pay a lot of attention on personal image, and being dirty might potentially hurt your chance of making friends.

Most Chinese men will have very little or no facial hair , and some will even have hardly any body hair at all just eyebrows eye lashes and a full head of hair ! As most truely asian people are mostly the same in this aspect !!it is a DNA thing !!

For most Chinese people hair grows much slower on the face, legs, chest, etc and sometimes is sparse and in general Chinese have much less hair in these area than white people. There are no rules against facial hair and you can find that in ancient Chinese art almost all men had beards as well as in the 1910s almost every Chinese man was sporting a mustache as it was popular in the time period.

In ancient time, there was a punishment to men, that the sinners should be castrated. Some good men voluntarily castrated themselves to do services into the King’s harem. These men had no beards.
I am Vietnamese. I have no beards. Actually, I have some hairs around my mouth, not enough to form a beard. I decided to shave all them off. Sometimes, I forget to shave my beards, people yell to me, “Go shave yourself.” Why do they make me shave rather than keep my beards? Do you think that it is some kind of prohibition? They just wish my best.

I am not alone. Many Vietnamese men, Cambodian men, Laotian men, Chinese men have not good beards. One American man talked to me when we were in Vietnam that “You have a lot of hair (on the top of the head) and I have a lot of beards. I wish we could have shared.”

From my daily observation, there a few Chinese with beards. Also, contemporary China has never had prohibition on beards. So, I think it’s some kind of modern customs.

On the contrary to modern times, ancient China has a tradition of keeping beards. People at that time believed that, “身体发肤,受之父母,不可损伤” (The body, the hair and the skin, given by the parents, should not be damaged.) Shaving is considered disrespectful to the parents.

Since the modernization of China, these traditional ideas are challenged by western ideas. The fresh image of shaving become more and more popular. In fact, it is not easy to keep breads. Breads take some time to clean and tidy up, also bring some trouble in life. More and more people are unwilling to spend time on this matter, with the gradual acceleration of the pace of modern life.

Moreover, Compared with the western, East Asian guys are less likely to grow bushy beards due to their genes. For many people, a long period, with sparse and untidy beard, will leave a scruffy impression on others. This social pressure makes some people who want to keep beards give up their mind.
Under the combined effect of these factors, leaving no beard has become some kind of modern customs in China.

It looks terrible because most of us grow these sparse, scraggly beards. I personally didn’t start shaving until I was 27 because I didn’t grow facial hair in any meaningful quantity until then.
All that classical art of Chinese men with flowing beards is more or less a flex of filial piety, since back then it was valued that one does not cut their hair as the body is a gift from their parents. Long beards thus are a sort of e-peen of filial piety.

In reality, our facial hairs start falling out before they get that long. It is just the natural limit of hair length at play. Once this reality mixed with Western values, preferences switched to clean shaven.

Side note, hair length is one of those things that I use to call out any Chinese on either side of the strait for “preserving Chinese culture.” In my view, neither side has done shit to preserve culture, they’ve only picked and chosen different aspects and are busy bickering how their super spechul set is more Chinese than the other side.

Both sides have destroyed Chinese culture. Both sides have evolved Chinese culture. It is how Chinese culture works, with inexorable waves of destruction and creation.
And both sides have chosen to abandon even the basics of filial piety for Westernized short hair cuts. So no, I’m not entertaining those “real preservers of Chinese culture” arguments.

Actually it is in there genes and society in there genes it is EDAR every han Chinese don't have hair and they are as beautiful as a women.
And for society they have believe that white people are more beautiful so if you have hair on your body your body won't look white so they use different product to reach that stage of whiting

Last reason is because of there diet and stress. Stress cause of study and money and getting into the top most university and about their diet you know what they all eat most of the time instead of clean vegetables.

A good hunk of the male population on the planet simply cannot grow full beards— their genetics don’t provide for it. Some have virtually no facial hair. Beard growth is a genetic trait, and numerous ethnic groups evolved to have little to none. In the US most males are Caucasian and they are more prone to have facial hair so we see lots more beards now that beards are acceptable. Few guys had them when I had my first beard in the late 70s. Now most males do it seems.

It’s genetics mostly. Only a certain percentage of Chinese men can grow full beard. Most of them may not have a long lasting Chinese lineage.
Despite that, If one would see Terracotta Army[1] soldiers in China, they would see several beard patterns which are still at large common in Chinese men.

There are some exceptions as well:
It is one of those things that is effect of geographical location and how the civilization of certain tribes took place. East Asian men have a high percentage of men with less facial hair, while South Asian men are opposite with large number of people with good facial hair.
Probably we would learn this once National Geographic or History channel makes a documentary on it!
