In contrast, China at that time was ruled by some shortsighted arrogant emperors who thought China was still the strongest country and they turned a blind eye to western countries phenomenal development. As a result, during the last 200 years, China has been invaded by dozen of greedy foreign countries, the invaders looted China and seized Chinese lands. Hong Kong was colonized by the UK, Macau was colonized by Portuguese, not to mention the most devastating Japanese invasion which killed countless Chinese civilians.
In short, China last 200 years history is full of humiliation and agony. Only until 40 years ago, China finally started to gradually regain the glory and not to be trampled or controlled by any foreign country at will. For western countries, China’s prosperity is the last thing they want to see.

I agree with you since i lived in and travelled around china for 2 years. actually, i liked the other smaller cities more then sh but i really liked the villagers suburban people who were poor, modest but happy, so helpful and generous!!! I wish i could visit this country more often and see the other parts of china that i couldn't able to see!! Fantastic exciting country with it's beutiful nature and traditional building style!!

Actually I live my half time in Switzerland and half time in China , I think I am clearly understand China ..
China is developing very well , First I think it is Chinese government clearly caught a chance and making correct decisions , which western hate this system! But western never asked the public people , how Chinese people think about Chinese government!
I think most of Chinese people know how the life is changing , we appreciate and proud of Chinese government…

There are some amazing convenient walking and cycling streets in Shanghai, but also tons of roads that suck for walking. Overall though it is a very walkable city. Best part is the elevated roads for traffic that get a lot of cars off streetlevel... makes it better for walking and also eliminates tons of traffic lights for drivers.

Yes, generally I do agree that US cities are far less pedestrian oriented than most Chinese cities. Though New York City is very different, it’s much more pedestrian oriented than the rest of the US and really Chinese Cities as well.

Back in the days I used to be very impressed with United States cities and skylines. I got to be honest the Chinese and their cities impress me more. This looks like paradise.

And yes their modern futuristic cities at this point looks better than the west. Especially how they manage to keep these huge cities clean compared to the new york, Los Angeles, Paris, London etc.

China cities are clean because the buildings are very new. When it is new, everything is clean.

Just look at the lightings that china and other countries have. Chinese does motion lights on buildings... But other countries don't do that.
Just search on youtube ( China light show )... And see how they show lights like those on buildings... cartoon motion, anime, etc... etc...

@Hari krishna I don't really care whose light are better or whatever. It seems silly to argue about it. Whatever China is doing, I'm sure many other countries have the technology to do, if they wanted to. The video here shows the lights. They're pretty. I don't think it needs to be a competition.

It's hard to believe that this is only 1 single street.
It look soo big and colorful, seems like you visited many many parts of the city... but nope, just one super long street full of stores and stuff.
I can see the difference with the others cities. This is is very full of people.. wow :O. It seems like a never ending flow of people, like a river of thoughts XD
I love how some store make a great exposition on their showcase, my favorite is the one with the traditional red dress (love this simple design of dress, and they must cost alots of money and made of fine fabric.)
the light show is crazy :O. it's actually connected to all the building around, even behind you.. WOW! that must require alots of work to make it work such synchronized. And it seems that it happen multiples times per night? no joke there is alots of people to watch it :D

Max, your videos of Shanghai are really great but I didn't really enjoy my time in Shanghai. It was the only place on my travels in China that I felt oppressed by the sheer numbers of people. I will say that most of the people were tourists (western and Chinese) so for me I didn't really feel that I was in China at all. Although I have a good Chinese friend in Shanghai I don't feel I will go there again.

Proud that my country (serbia) has good relations with China and Russia .. The two countries being demonized by the "prosperous" West, but, in reality, I'd like to move East, while everyone is dreaming of Germany .. I've also got a Hungarian passport, so I can live anywhere in the EU I want.. lived with my mom in Berlin for 2 years, of course I know German, but... Couldn't bare it anymore.. capitalism and the people and filth, drugs, crime, violence, radicalism (of all sorts) .. never been to a safer and cooler city... My dream is to go to China one day but, as a simple chef I doubt I can make it true.. Maybe if I start working in a chinese restaurant and start learning cooking skills and mandarin ... Or I can teach English, I have a TEFL certificate ..who knows.. just want to travel, learn and explore more.. that's why I'm a fan of cooking, linguistics and history. Onething is clear..

These things, streets and buildigns in this video are indeed very beautiful! But there are also other areas of Shanghai, for the people that are not rich! Shouldn't then a city with less than 4 mil. people, which is the capital of the mightiest European (and one of the worlds leading) economies, take care of a Smaller city than this and make it lik beautiful? They're rich and have the money, but no will, to eradicate al the crime and homelessness, open drug use (Not smoking weed but injecting freely, wherever, doesn't feel nice when I'm taking a walk with my little sister and see it 3 times) in the city.. And as I mentioned, so many in tents literally in the center of the city, under S-Bahn railway bridges. And you think that the police don't keep you under surveillance here? You must be joking.. 没什么可比的。我知道你指出的不同之处，但有些地方是说不通的。你说那是一个更大的城市，可以负担得起更多?那么，一个人口不到400万的城市，比上海小得多，还是欧洲最强大(也是世界领先)的经济体的首都，难道不是应该有能力让它更漂亮吗?德国很富有，但没有意愿解决所有的犯罪。到处都是无家可归者和公开吸毒者(不是大麻，是自由注射，在任何地方都能看到，当我和我的小妹妹散步时，我看到了三次，感觉很不舒服)。正如我提到的，很多人住在城市中心的帐篷里，就在S-Bahn铁路桥下。你以为德国的警察不会监视你吗?你一定是在开玩笑。但是，不管怎样，我不介意被监视，因为我不会参与犯罪。你知道你在英国受到的监视比在中国更多。我有朋友去过中国，他们中的一些人从未离开过。如此多的人相信西方的“自由媒体”叙事，你必须明白听到媒体说什么，然后知道事实是恰恰相反的就对了……我爱中国!
