Good Job. Shows you how tolerant Chinese society really is. If this was in Québec all these people would be free to freely practice their religion however this ceremony would be a no no and quickly declared unlawful.I arrived in Bombay India from Montreal and after 8 months I flew into Chengdu from Leh in northern India. The contrast was so great that I felt like I had died and was in Heaven. Clean everywhere, lots of space, a big beautiful Central Park with improvised traditional music, people playing games while the bird cage hung in a tree nearby and people flying kites 5 km in the air...wow. Beer and Hot pot then after 2 weeks down to Spring City, Kunming. The world is crazy here with the big white balloon taking its toll on political media and military schitsophrenia ???? Pls stay where you are and keep giving us great videos. Bons vents !

Your highlighting on the probable impact on the ecosystem from such ritual is highly appreciated Katherin.

Interesting indeed! (Been in Chengdu - for a couple of days only - but never "discovered" any rivers there; aargh.) What you document is quite a clash of a noble and generous Tibetan custom (should be extended to other species, Homo included) and the - I think - horrendous ecological impact, as you gently but clearly pointed out. Luckily, the birds are doing a good job in ameliorating this impact while enriching their diet; a win-win scenario (in a limited way). Good job, Katherine!

Agreed with you 100%. Releasing them meant well, but as you say, it could throw the ecosystem off balance.

A rather nice day out for you as an environmentalist…seeing the surprising blue sky and a life-sustaining river being ‘restocked’ with fishes. The suitability of those species is debatable but the tradition is commendable. :D

We all know Katherine''s idea of "weird food" now - chillies in cakes!
Although a part of me is certain that there are legit recipes of chilli cakes somewhere in this world

At many places some temples do sell birds, tortoise to be 放生, they caught them from the jungle, rivers and then re-released them in the city, or different places again, in my opinion it is like kidnapping someone from place A and release them in place Z, this is not 放生 i think? Hope your video reaches many many people across the world and more people are educated and aware...thanks for your effort!

Exaclty! recently it''s reported that in a lake of China, those released fish from igonorant people actually killed lots of local fish which cause tons of loss and for the first time they were fined. Environmental education to the public is Deadly needed!!!

Based on what the Western media told us about how the Ethnic Minorities are treated in China, those Tibetans would all have been arrested.

Katherine, it is always a good idea to save lives. But, it is a good idea to make sure you release the organism in the appropriate environment.

Oh poor fish! Only the birds will be happy, but this is a religious tradition. Anyway the river banks of this city are amazing. Thank you for sharing this beautiful video.

I find this a very cute episode I really learn alot from your videos about how Chinese people thinks but I still think their idea of Karma is a long believe since ancient times I think there are 2 parts of China one that is modern and very global in thought while another is very sheltered in their old traditional ways and thinking and I giggled when you figure out why the birds are there hahaha

Thank you Katherine for bringing this awareness, where good (religious) intentions could harm the environment. In the US, what comes in mind is the boa snakes in Florida, the Asian carps and snake heads fishes in lakes that got out of hand as there are no predators to keep them in balance. There should be an environmentalist around to be consulted before the release of the specie. Good video.

The idea is actually good that is to give a second chance of life for animals that are going to be killed for food. But yeah I do agree with your opinion that releasing animals back into the wild must consider the natural ecosystem. If it doesn''t it will endangered the native species that live in that place and also causes devastation to the environment.

Wow, you got very close to those egrets, wish we could manage that here. Hahaha, I typed that at the beginning of watching. We have seen the occasional release of one or two little fishes but never anything like your scene today. I wonder if there are guys with nets just a bit further downstream. There would be here! You should tell them about the Burmese pythons in Florida or even the fact that salt and fresh water fish do not like each other''s habitat. As always, nice to see you!
