For most people who works in companies or the government,it is one of the few chances of having a long holidays with most family members are in free too,which means they can travel together.
The most important thing is not the time nor the place you travel in,but the people you travel with.
By the way ,in my opinion , travelling during the golden week holidays is quite awful .In our Chinese,we call it "People mountain people sea"
But with the one you love,who cares?

Why is it when Chinese people travel, they bring so much food?
When I have a 2 weeks trip in Italy several years ago, I told my wife, It is unneccessary to take food for the trip. surely we can find kinds of declicious foods at there.
My wife agreed this but still hid some instant noodles in the bottom of the baggage.
Then…. after one week’s western food journey, I found her little secrets.
My heart is filled with gratitude. ：）

But based on my personal contacts, more and more young professionals who are usually better educated and better paid are now working crazy schedules, say 12 hours a day and 5-6 days a week. And National Holidays might be one of the few (<4) chances when those professionals can take a breath. That's why they would rather to travel (only to see everywhere stuffed with people) than staying at home.

Do Chinese people like black people?
I am a Black American. I lived in Beijing, China teaching English. I never had any negative interactions with Chinese people. My Chinese co-workers enjoyed working with me. We laughed and played, but still kept our focus on providing an excellent product for our adult students. After work, I enjoyed hanging out with my co-workers.
At my place of work, I taught adult students. Some of them asked me about racism and prejudice toward minorities in the USA. They were very concerned about visiting or moving to a country where they would encounter racism and prejudice. None of my students ever said one negative word about Black people.
In the streets of Beijing, I spent plenty of time walking, taking taxis, riding subways and buses, hanging out at markets and going shopping. I always received excellent treatment from everyone that I interacted with in public. I never felt fear or threatened. I would be outside late at night to go eat. I always felt like another Chinese citizen.
I remember fracturing my toe. I needed to get to the hospital. A Chinese friend of mine was a driver. He saw me in pain trying to get to public transportation. He quickly came over and offered to take me in his car. My Chinese is broken, but at the hospital my friend gave me his number and told me to contact him after I finished. I called him after I received treatment at the hospital. He had another friend come pick me up.
I had to wear a removable cast on my foot for a few weeks. Everywhere I went, Chinese people would ask me if I were okay. In fact, older women would come up to me, rub me on my back and tell me that everything would be fine. I never had so much concern shown for me at any earlier point in my life. I asked one of my Chinese women friends why people were so concerned about me. She told me it was because they cared about me. Later on, at home alone, I broke down in tears over the love shown for me.

What do average Americans think of today's China?
BEIJING: Although I have lived and worked in China since October 2010, I am a native of Dallas, TX USA, born and raised there while I spent some time in the East Coast pf US, Washington DC, New York City and New Hampshire. So I have some familiarity about how average Americans think of China.
I was anti-China person myself until after moving to the Asian continent in South Korea from 2001 to 2007. At the time, I was just an ESL (English as a Second-language) teacher and not doing anything remarkable with my life. When I decided to move to Seoul, I was struggling professional career wise after graduating from college with a B.A. degree in Political Science.
I learned the hard way that when studying at a Liberal Arts’ school and deciding not to pursue a career path as professor or lawyer you will likely confront many challenges finding a stable and high-paying job.
Despite my love for reading Shakespeare, Aristotle and Tolstoy, it’s not easy persuading potential employees that my passion for reading the Western Classics should should place me as top priority in the hiring process.
But I have lived and learned from it and moved on. Nonetheless, I felt more comfortable among Asians as many of them are eager to learn, hard working and ambitious.
But there was a harder edge to life in South Korea than I had anticipated. It was my experience that many South Koreans were perfectionists, quick tempered and impatient.
普通美国人对今天的中国有什么看法？

But when people ask me why I chose to move to Korea back then it was simple. I wanted to try a new adventure and loved to travel. When reviewing job ads, there was a message about teaching English in South Korea and it captured my curiosity but to be honest I was not interested in teaching just wanted to try something new.
So I called up the recruiter and two weeks later I was on a plane to work there. If the job ad said teach English in Japan, Vietnam, China or any other Asia-Pacific country I would have gone there without pondering the differences among Asian nations.
I mention this story to explain the notable ignorance on foreign affairs among average Americans. I was anti-China but I went to school, read books and most Americans I spoke to had hated China. I was young and never visited China so I made the logical conclusion that China is bad

My perspective had changed dramatically after moving to South Korea and meeting local businessmen who told me they loved making trips to China and said the country was much better than what many others were saying.
I took a weekend trip to Shanghai in 2005 and discovered the Chinese were not brainless Marxists, fanatical political zealots or ideologues, they were regular people and loved to enjoy life just like average Americans. The trip opened my eyes and knew I could feel comfortable in China if I choose to move there.
And that’s what happened. I came to Beijing over 10 years ago and have stayed here. I point out that average Americans are not hearing the real story about China.
Many scholars with fancy titles and prestigious academic resumes are claiming to be ‘China experts,’ but they do nothing more than spew China hate. Their only expertise is knowing how to criticize China and sound convincing to others.
My recommendation for average Americans would be to encourage you to visit China and check it out for yourself.

China does only have two such long holidays, which is National Day and Chinese New Year. But this year the holiday of National day(Oct 1st) was merged with the holiday of Mid-Autumn Festaval (August 15th in Traditional Chinese calendar, October 4th this year.), so the holiday is longer.
You know, in Chinese New Year, all of the people wants to go home for couple days, so they only have time to travel on National Day.

My late wife came from a Hokkien family and it was just mind boggling to me as a Cantonese how they spend. Not on nice clothes or home decorations but on providing for guests on the eve night-
Food - a roast pig is a must and more if one can afford it. Suppliers know the demand and raise prices to double the normal but it did not deter my in laws. Beer in unlimited free flow. Numerous cakes and fruits are supplied as well. There is so much leftover food that extra is delivered to relatives outside the Hokkien enclaves.

I think many Chinese choose to travel (as in, go on a vacation to see some part of China) rather than just go home to see family, because many of the other national holidays include some level of obligation to visit relatives. So, this is one of their rare opportunities to take a real vacation. Also, the government encourages travel by making the highways toll-free.

How are winter holidays in China?
As a foreign student: BORING.
Everything closes, everyone goes back to their homes.
The campus was dark as hell, there were no open restaurants so I had to cook and there was not much to do.. I went into what I call “Hibernation mode” and sleep a lot, wake up to cook and play video games all day and repeat. Obviously it’s also very cold so you don’t want to do much, especially me since I despise cold weather.
If you are working then it’s great, you get a pretty long break and can recharge batteries and maybe do some traveling.
If you work as an English teacher then it’s super great, you have money and a very long vacation.
Most Chinese go back home and spend time with their families.

一切都结束了，每个人都回到了自己的家。

One time I was traveling from Changsha to Hong Kong on Hongkong Airlines. There was a Chinese tour group on the plane heading to Taiwan (yeah, this was a few years ago).
I ended up sitting next to one of the members of that tour group. She was an elderly woman who had clearly never traveled by air before.
She couldn’t figure out how to fasten her seat belt. She ended up tying it in a knot. I had to undo it and show her how to fasten it properly.
With China’s rapid economic development, a lot of the Chinese tourists now exploring the world have seldom traveled abroad. For many, it might even be the first time. Many lack understanding of the cultural norms of the country they’re visiting. They behave the way they might in China.
I confess I dislike it because as an ethnic Chinese, I also get blowback. I still remember visiting a lookout point overlooking the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. A Mainland Chinese family pushed their way to the front of the platform. Yet it was me that an American woman chose to glare at, even though I was standing off to the side. All Asians look alike, right? ??
Give it time. As more Chinese travel and gain a better understanding of the world, I believe you’ll see better behaviour. I know many experienced and sophisticated Chinese travelers who take time to understand the customs and cultural norms of the countries they visit.

There are two major national holidays. National Day, like our 4th of July, only much longer and Chinese New Year, like our New Year, but much, much longer. Both have their attractions because the domestic areas for tourists are wide open. The problem is, you are competing with the locals. That means cost of transportation is not only higher, but difficult to get a reservation unless made very early, that also applies to hotels at popular tourist sites. It is jammed, wall to wall people The Chinese have no choice. Those days are fixed.
My recommendation, don’t visit China on their national holidays. Visit when the weather is good and not a holiday, that means spring and autumn for most places. Summers are hot, especially the south gets very humid because it lies in the semi-tropical zone. cities like Chongqing, Wuhan, and Nanjing are called the ‘furnaces’ of China for good reason. Winters gets very cold with snow and rain during winter in the northern parts. My analogy is the US. The north gets 4 seasons, so does China. The south gets typhoons (hurricanes) during late summer for 3 to 4 months. The south is like Florida, humid during the summer months.

What might put you off of visiting China for a holiday?
Nothing should prevent you from visiting China at almost anytime of the year. During Chinese New Year it will be a little more noisy from the fire crackers you will hear day or night but you'll get used to it. Same custom for weddings by the way. Also some local shops will be closed as many families go back inland to visit family. China is a fantastic country with great culture, fantastic food and wonderful people. I would highly recommend it.
