Legacy brands were hoping to make Southeast Asia the dumping ground for ICE but we here are very price sensitive. Even the less efficient EV is still way cheaper than the best ICE, and now that oil-producing countries like Malaysia are planning to cut petrol subsidies for the mid to upper-income bracket, interest in EVs is skyrocketing.

@Canon_Chan
Agree with the "dumping ground" mentality. For too long, African and South-east Asian people have been forced to use second-hand vehicles from Japan and America, even in terms of infrastructure, while being expected to pay those countries a high price they don't deserve (See Japan's recent attempt to sell old retired rail cars from 80s to Indonesia). No wonder those regions are now siding with Chinese manufacturers, allowing, for the first time, people here to enjoy modern and advanced products at an affordable price.

@robertfonovic3551
what on earth are talking about? mid to upper income Malaysians are not subsidies for fuel usage any differently to the rest of the population.
' even the cheapest EV is still way cheaper than the best ICE car ' Well thanks for stating the obvious, of course a MG EV is cheaper than a Porsche, so whats you point in mentioning that?

@robertfonovic3551
@Canon_Chan
your comment is complete crap. the people in the areas you mention are not forced to buy anything. they purchase what they can afford.

Australia is the dumping ground. We have some of the worst fuel standards in the world

With massive traffic jams in KL and Bangkok, it makes sense if most cars there are EV. This results in Better air quality in the cities. EV cars also don’t heat up the air in city roads. This makes the traffic jams more bearable. We don’t need to wear masks while walking in the beautiful streets in KL and Bangkok.

If you install solar panels and solar batteries , you will save even more on bills charging your EV at home in Malaysia and other South East Asia countries!

As a Singaporean I would say EVs and South East Asia is a match made in heaven.
Lots of city driving here with tons of traffic jams. EVs would thrive as they are very efficient in such circumstances.
Also, unlike temperate countries we have to deal with global warming EVERYDAY (since we are in a tropical region) and like u said, direct pollution from the fumes created by a lot of traffic jams (although this is a lesser problem in Singapore).

@keithng5249
In Singapore if u have home charging, u will almost never need public charging (unless u are a Taxi driver of course). Our island is so small it stretches for 50km end to end (and most Teslas have ranges of 400km and above)

These (non-US and non-European) markets are where the traditional car-makers make much of their profits. As their profits fall in these regions, so their overall global viability is weakened. Companies cannot afford to lose markets where they derive such profits - so while EV adoption in some major markets may be slower (leading some commentators to believe there's no threat), no company can sustain losses for very long. Tony Seba's preditions ("game over for ICE") is becoming a reality - and quite rapidly.

This is a facinating story. It will be interesting to see the Q4 sales results for 2023. I am particularly interests to see the drop in sales for Toyota and Honda in this market.

I'm surprised how BEV/BYD is now very quickly getting a foothold in Thailand, especially considering massive import duties. Yes, burning off is a major problem in northern Thailand.

There are 2 major road blocks for it taking off rapidly in Malaysia. #1 Petrol/Gas - as a major oil producer the government still enjoys alot of kickbacks from the local oil producer, Petronas. If they start backing EV, than should every household make the switch to EV, that would impact Petronas's bottom line. #2 There are 2 major auto players in Malaysia. With exception to Proton (which Geely owns 49.9% of it), Perodua the other local automaker has not made any significant investments into EV. EV infrastructure is also pretty spotty given the first reason mentioned. If these 2 things are address coupled with even more lower costs EVs coming into the market, then I forsee it taking off here in Malaysia. Btw, through Geely's management of Proton, they have recently started to sell Smart EV in Malaysia

Many people in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia know that they are dependent in imports for petrol and Diesel, and don't want to be beholden to Malaysia or Indonesia. They can see that fuel prices are only going up, and they know that they can get their own electricity from the sun, or, in Thailand, from nuclear power. What's more, the people are smart, and won't take second-rate EVs. I can see Thailand in particular not just phasing out new ICE by 2030, but probably by 2028.

BYD Atto 3 electric cars gaining traction in Hong Kong. Although Tesla dominates the Hong Kong electric car market, I am seeing more and more Atto 3 eVs and the price is actually more expensive compared to mainland China and I think in the rest of SE Asia as well. I got mine Atto 3 delivered in April this year and I just found out my friend who visited us yesterday got her brand-new red Atto 3 delivered in June. I see a couple of BYD E6s and vans, but very few if any BYD Seals, Hans or even Dolphins. If the range and boot/trunk space can be improved, I think the Atto 3 could be a winner for BYD!

@dxelson
Very few, in Macau you can see a much greater variety of EVs than HK. I also got my Atto 3 in January. Only complaint is that the infotainment system is far inferir than mainland chinas. I hope they offer a one time upgrade to change the systems to be the same as mainland China, including the charging port. In the future almost everyone will be driving into the mainland in a regular basis since the "Northbound" scheme was launched

Given 1 of every 3 people on the planet live in the relatively small area of S.E. Asia, which is the largest auto market and fastest-growing auto manufacturing market, and they are rapidly going all-EV, that should get everyone's attention. I really hope Chinese and Taiwanese leaders meet and discuss forming an alliance and get rid of this nonsensical tension in the region.

Great news that Asia will soon be ravaging the already pathetic sales of Toyota and other diesel manufacturers. They have all had it too good for too long. Now is time for BEVs to shine.

Given what you've said about the relationship between Japanese Automakers and the Government, I'm wondering how public charging provisions might be made there. I would think that the Japanese Carmakers would be trying to make it hard to charge, publicly...

@fredhearty1762
Low cost EVs are going to allow transition of the entire developing world to electric. Within the decade, I believe they will pass the US and maybe Europe and achieve essentially full EV new vehicle sales. Tesla needs to break ground on its India facility.

China has been frustratingly SLOW to enter SEA esp Indonesia. Come on China...chop chop chop. Indonesia EVs.

@furry_homunculus
Chinese carmakers have spotted a weakness in their foreign competitors - the Japanese above all. Now that we are in the “hockey stick” of EV adoption, it is virtually impossible for Toyota and other laggards to catch up. By the time that the Japanese produce competent EVs, the likes of 2:23 BYD, Geely and Tesla will have conquered markets that used to be controlled by Japanese manufacturers.
