What is so great about Indian culture?
Indians love to celebrate
You’ve probably heard of a few famous festivals in India, but that’s only scratching the surface of the enormous number of religious festivals celebrated here! You’ll marvel at the joyous celebrations in India, like beautiful Diwali, the five-day Festival of Light. Whether you want to throw colourful powder at Holi, the vibrant Festival of Colours, or witness sacred ceremonies performed on the River Ganges, there are endless ways to embrace your spirituality in India.
Tolerance of all religions and cultures
Religion plays a very important role in many people’s lives in India. While over 80% of the country identifies as Hindu, all religions and cultures are accepted here. India is a secular state, meaning the country does not favour any particular religion. You’ll find everyone from Buddhists and Sikhs to Jains and Muslims to Christians and Jews peacefully practising their faith.
They’ve done so for centuries, as India is the birthplace of four major religions – Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. It’s also home to the world’s third-largest Muslim population and has welcomed a Christian population since the 1st Century CE. You’ll see ornate Hindu temples standing by mosques and cathedrals everywhere, and it’s all testament to the tolerant nature of Indian culture.
On top of this religious diversity, Indians themselves are a unique bunch. You’ll find different traditions among the different cultures all over India, from the northern mountains to the southern beaches. Take a trip around this amazing country and you’ll discover just how diverse Indian culture can be!

The spiritual side of Indian culture
The deeply devotional nature of Indian culture can be found everywhere, from the beautiful temples to the locals quoting the Gita. Indians have an ancient philosophical culture, and for many, their indigenous religions aren’t just religions – they’re a way of life. Travellers have been drawn to India for centuries in their pursuit for holy wisdom .
The art of bargaining with a smile
Just one trip to the market and you’ll be amazed by the art of Indian bargaining. Nearly everything is negotiable in India, from vegetables to clothes to taxi rides – and it’s always done with a smile. Bargaining is part of Indian culture and it’s not all about “winning” the negotiation by driving down the price. You should always be polite and have fun with it! once the seller accepts your price, don’t keep negotiating or say you don’t want to buy, as this is very rude.
As a general rule, don’t accept a price that’s less than 30% off the original asking price. Always shop around at the market and it’s also helpful to speak some of the local language. Try saying “”Yeh kitne ka hai?” (“How much is this?” in Hindi) to break the ice – they’ll appreciate your efforts. You can also ask your Trafalgar Travel Director to help you bargain in the markets too. They’ll be happy to show you the ropes. A quick tip: Many shopkeepers in India believe the first sale of the day is lucky, so get in early and you may get a better price!

The ABCs of India
If you’re wondering what to talk about in India, just remember the ABCs of India – Astrology, Bollywood and Cricket. These three topics actually attract the most internet traffic in India too. So if you want to get a deeper insight into Indian culture or simply chat with the locals, be sure to brush up on Indian religion, Bollywood movies, and their beloved game of cricket.
Big fat Indian weddings
Indian weddings are a big deal. It’s not just one day of celebration. The average Indian wedding lasts for around three days and some can last a week, with multiple rituals and ceremonies. Also, you don’t just get married on any old day in India. Families of the future couple consult with priests and astrologers to pick an auspicious date. The horoscopes of the couple must also be checked for compatibility.
Throughout the wedding, the bride and groom will be decked out in the most beautiful traditional Indian wedding clothing. The whole event is a joyous affair . If you’re lucky enough to experience an Indian wedding, it’s sure to be a day (or three!) you’ll never forget.

What is Indian culture?
Defining Indian culture using words is not easy. That's why a lot of historians spend their life studying it. But if I have to define it then I would like to define as "Indian Culture is Open Source, like Linux. Build your own modules that suit you and make you happy."

Is Indian culture misogynist?
Yess it is, India culture presents fixed gender roles for females, if she adheres to them, she is a good woman, if she tries to challenge these, she is shamed by the society as arrogant, feminazi, homebreaker, slut and what not.
The Ultimate Aim of a girl's life in India is too get married as soon as possible, obey her husband, give birth to a male child essentially and dedicate her whole life in service of her in laws and their family.
An Indian girl is expected to be a good wife, great daughter in law, do all the household chores quietly and single handedly without expecting any help from in laws or husband, expected to prioritize her husband's family n completely forget her own parents n maternal family after marriage, if she prioritizes her career then she is a selfish woman, who deserves to be punished, she is expected to take permission of in laws and husband to visit her friends or parents, if she is vocal about the unjust treatment metted to her by her in laws or husband, she is asked to shut up and compromise, divorce is still a big taboo in India, especially for women.
Almost all Indians prefer a male child. Female infanticide rates in India is one of the highest in the World.

A rape victim is shamed everytime but never the molester, victim blaming is too common in this society.
Dowry, gender pay gap, female infanticide, bride burning, domestic violence, strict gender roles, sexism is an inseparable part of our culture. Domestic violence & marital rape is a norm in this society and a woman is asked to deal with it bcoz he is her ‘husband' and he has “ownership" over his wife !
Single mothers, divorcees, working women are constantly shamed by Indian society.
Sadly Indian society cannot accept a successful woman who lives life on her own terms.
And the worst part, the denial of many Indians about this misygony in their culture, makes the situation worst for women in India, sexism is easily justified in the name of traditions and culture here.
God save women of this nation !

Yes, modern Indian culture has been influenced by American culture in many ways. This influence can be seen in various aspects of Indian society, including music, fashion, film, food, and language.
One of the most significant ways in which American culture has influenced modern Indian culture is through the spread of American media and entertainment. American movies, television shows, and music have become increasingly popular in India, and many young people in India are heavily influenced by American pop culture.
This influence can be seen in the music and fashion trends that have become popular in India, as well as in the growing popularity of American-style fast food and other consumer products. Additionally, many young Indians are learning to speak English and are adopting American slang and idioms in their everyday speech.
Overall, while India has a rich cultural heritage of its own, American culture has had a significant impact on modern Indian culture and is likely to continue to do so in the future.

I can’t think of the West being influenced by Indian culture in any way.
There are large Indian communities in the English speaking Western countries like the US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa.
Indian food - Attitudes may vary from country to country with the Brits being more open to Indian food while majority of Americans don’t go for it. But either way, Indian food is not associated with fine dining like other cuisines - Italian, Japanese, Mediterranean, French ... Indian stores selling Indian groceries are generally located in ghetto like areas in Western cities and you won’t find non-Indians shopping there. They have never heard of names of Indian spices and other ingredients. The odors do put off many of them.
Spiritual centers and Temples - They are generally located in far away, remote corners of the Western cities and are nothing more than an obxt of curiosity for Westerners.
Indians way of life exists in isolation and majority of locals aren’t even aware of it. They do know that Indians are in general capable, responsible, and hard working people. That they go home after work and do their thing - Curry, Bollywood, Mango Lassi, Cricket, etc.

Why there is no pop culture in India is Bollywood responsible for it?
Yes, absolutely. In Hollywood the songs are more of background scores, while in India it is an intrinsic part of a movie. All our childhood memories are fully lixed to favourite songs we heard in childhood.
Pakistani music scene is more welcoming of pop groups. haven't watched a Pakistani movie yet, but perhaps they don't have songs.

An ordinary ( average) Indian is born into a family with Indian culture. Both his parents, relatives, neighborhood, teachers, vllage/ town will have Indian culture. Indian culture is part of him since birth, he grows in it,lives in it and gets his education in it. Indian Culture influences him in every way from birth to death. He may be influenced by other culture or he may even imitate another, but it will only be aping it.
