I disagree. Most Vietnamese called themselves East Asian not Southeast Asian. Vietnamese people rarely pay attention to the Khmer, Thai, and Malaysian. Vietnamese people see them as weird strangers who don’t even used chopsticks and celebrate Lunar New Year.

I agree with you that Southern Chinese are the most similar to the Vietnamese. Both are mixed Baiyue and Han Chinese. The Southern Chinese hold more historical influence over the world than the Northern Chinese as Southern Chinese from Guangdong and Fujian province were the one who built Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. They were the first wave of Chinese immigrants to the Americas and Australia.

They are not typical Vietnamese. Even though our culture resemble East Asian countries, most Vietnamese consider Vietnam a Southeast Asian country, in my opinion. We are glad to make friends with other people in Asean.
