Thai and kebab in the same position kinda took me by surpise.

Crackajack91
Are kebabs actually a favourite though? I know they are a staple when you're out on the piss but does anyone seriously eat them sober?

OniOneTrick
Yeah tbf they’re less risky than trying a new Chinese or other Asian place that carries a decent risk of being shit. Kebab is almost always good kebab, unlike all other takeaway

Detlions09
Wtf not true. Kebab is way worse than say, Japanese Chinese or Korean food. Have you tried Korean food? It’s literally the perfect combination of healthy and tasty. Watch the British Korean dude on YouTube who makes British people try the food.

ThyssenKrup
Grilled lean meat, fresh salad and fresh bread. Good kebab is pretty damn healthy.

marshallandy83
Completely subjective. And where are you gonna find Japanese food, never mind Korean food, outside of a few major cities?

That's the problem with things like Chinese etc - the immense variability.
My mum lives in Exeter. It once had by far the best Chinese takeaway I've ever tasted. After a few years I believe the chef retired and it immediately nosedived in quality.
McDonald's/BK/KFC etc might be boring but you know exactly what it will taste like whether you're in Land's End or John O'Groats.

Groovyrider
If you goto a proper kebab restaurant then they are really nice.
But a lot of kebab shops all over the u.k are shit with greasy low quality meat. Crap salad that isn't fresh, in a cheap pitta bread.

herrbz
Yeah, I thought Thai and Indian would be easily top. Can't remember the last time anyone I know got a Chinese.

I don't see any Thai takeaway places, have never had one. I like Thai food and will go to a Thai restaurant for sure but on a takeaway ranking it's not even a thing for me.

thewalterwhiteeffect
Idk i feel like kebabs are a popular option when you’ve been out drinking and can hardly keep yourself upright.
Whereas, fully sober I’m sure people would choose an alternative.
Regardless, I’m surprised it’s on the same level as Thai food too.

miguelangel011192
I used to have a Chinese restaurant and a kebab next one to the other, and the Chinese was constantly with people, but the kebab was more crow at nights. Maybe in quantities Chinese food win this round

Ugo_foscolo
Kebab is more of a eat-on-your-way-home after a night out where i imagine this is poll is more for what would you order for a Friday evening meal at home.

Barring of course the many other reasons for people to have them incredibly infrequently to the point they basically don't get them, takeaways are expensive.
There are a lot of people who just can't afford them. And a lot of other people who'd rather not spend that money, who save and treat themselves in other ways.

theappleses
Yeah I didn't get a single takeaway for the whole time I was at uni because I was skint. I'm sure it's the same for many on minimum wage or single parents or addicts or whatever. If you've got £50 quid left for the last half of the month, it would be madness to spend it on a takeaway.

alice_op
My Mum was a single parent raising 2 girls on a council estate, she worked full time and wasn't entitled to any benefits. We didn't have a single takeaway outside of a chippy my entire childhood. First takeaway was a Chinese at 18 when I was earning my own money.
It's entirely feasible to me 13% never have a takeaway.

Joe_PM2804
I bet that Chinese when you were 18 was eye opening.

cjrarh
Me too. Lived with my single mum of four who worked full time, we always cooked at home because we could do cheap easy meals. I'd been to restaurants before when my parents were together, but for about ten years, I'd never had a takeaway until I went to uni.

ArcticLemon
Yes we only ever went to the Chinese actually in house on an special occasion (birthday) , and we knew the people who owned it. We never ordered it or any other takeaway until I was 16+ aside like you say for the odd chips now and then.
Nowadays I still do not like to order it, last takeaway I ordered was probably a kebab when we had people over.

FirstScheme
Your mum was a single parent with no benefits, 2 kids and she home cooked every single day? She sounds amazing

owls_know_things
Similar, skint, but with both parents who were not really aware of takeaways other than a fish and chip shop, there weren't any nearby except for chippies. Had my first Chinese aged 21, first Indian aged 24,.

That's probably a contributing factor to Chinese being one of the more popular options. It's one of the few takeaways where you're still vaguely getting your money's worth.
Or at least that's how it seems in my area. I've stopped getting other takeaways because it's impossible not to feel completely ripped off.

Solo-me
I can afford them but I only have maximum 6 or 7 TA a YEAR. I d rather go out for a meal or cook at home.

Same_Adhesiveness_31
More likely the opposite.
You'll find most takeaways are eaten by those who can least afford them because they have less cooking skills, less cooking equipment, eat less variation due to restricted diets as a poorer child and have less time to cook and plan meals.

IhaveaDoberman
There's a difference between people who have no money because they spend too much on takeaways and people who have to try and make £50 or much less last a week or longer.

Same_Adhesiveness_31
There are no people who have no money because they spend too much on takeaways. No matter how skint you are, food is a priority and for many poorer people good food is a takeaway.

IhaveaDoberman
If you have very little money, a takeaway is a terrible option. Because you're spending most of your money on one meal. You can get a pot, a burner, litres of water, a week's worth of pasta and sauce for less than most takeaways now.
That's the point I'm making, if you're constantly out of money, you don't have the money for one.
But there are a lot of people who complain about having no money and never save or have money in their bank accounts, who should be comparatively well off. As a result of the number of takeaways they get. Because they spend all their money on food.

MrSpindles
While it seems high (around 1 in 8 people) there are some of us who definitely do not eat takeaway food. It has been some years since I have eaten takeaway, one year on a whim I decided to do a year with no takeaway as a new year's resolution. It got to the end of the year and it had become a habit and I've just never had the desire since then. It's been about 7 years now for me.

bjncdthbopxsrbml
I stopped buying after working in a 5* hygiene one…
I saw so many health violations of food safety… I’ll cook for myself thanks

Never-Any-Horses
Could quite happily never have a takeaway ever again. Always a disappointment and ridiculously expensive nowadays.
If I cba cooking, I'll just get a supermarket pizza or something I can throw in the air fryer.

r1cbr0
I struggle to remember a takeaway I've had where I felt good afterwards and I didn't think "Wish I'd just cooked".
I'd probably have to say Fish and Chips. And that's just because we sat on a beach, where the memory means more than the food.

JustGhostin
I am one of the 13%, AMA.

A17012022
What do you do with all the money you save?
Seriously, takeaway ain't cheap.

JustGhostin
Spend it on nice food to cook, better cuts of meat from a butcher, nice veg and fruit from markets/green grocer. We go to a large Chinese supermarket/wholesaler and buy frozen dim sum/bao etc. most Chinese takeaways use the exact same ones so what’s the difference

mr-no-life
Indian takeaways in my opinion are often a lot more greasy than sitting down in a proper Indian restaurant.

jbartlettcoys
Love a curry, but an Indian meal is much easier to whip up yourself affordably than a decent Chinese, that's why if I'm ordering takeaway I tend to go for the latter.

ThyssenKrup
Totally disagree. I think it's the other way around. A proper restaurant style curry is near impossible to get right at home.
Many Chinese dishes are easy with a few jars of the right oyster sauce etc.

rosstoferwho
Indian when you eat in hits differently/better than when you take out. Chinese is the same in fairness but is better as a takeaway than a curry is.
Note. These are opinions not facts

Rough-Cheesecake-641
Nah, they're facts.

Lopsycle
I feel like there's been a proliferation of really bad Indian takeaways over the last few years, to the point I rarely order them now because its just not worth the risk for the price. Chinese is way more consistent. It makes sense to me.

UnoBeerohPourFavah
I thought it was just me, I’ve kinda gone off Indian takeaway recently when once upon a time it was my absolute favourite

Detlions09
Not true. Chinese Japanese and Korean food are literally among the top super foods in the world. It’s the perfect mix of healthy and tasty. Indian food is way too greasy in my opinion

Apprehensive_888
Nah, Indian food is good but there only a handful of dishes I enjoy compared to dozens in a Chinese. So it's correct imo.

I think if the question was “sit down restaurants” then it’d be Indian. Getting an Indian takeaway is too much hassle and unpacking etc. Chinese can eat straight out the box

gigapumper
Definitely not accurate. Fairly confident McDonald's is by far the most popular takeaway yet its not represented on the survey.

thefooby
How the hell is McDonald’s takeaway so popular? Surely the only reason to eat at McDonald’s is because there’s a million of them and you also need the toilet.

Apprehensive_888

Cheese-n-Opinion
I love Chinese food, but a Chinese takeaway is too often a sad disappointment. I prefer going to a half-decent Chinese restaurant.

Nuclear_Geek
I'm lucky enough to have a couple of good Chinese takeaways near me. Unfortunately, last weekend, I decided to experiment and try somewhere I hadn't ordered from before. It's the first time I've thrown takeaway food away because of it being so low quality. I'll stick to the ones I know are decent in future.

mrb2409
Depends where. I think Chinese takeaway is significantly better outside of London for instance. I don’t know if it’s because Chinatown has a monopoly on the decent chefs or maybe you open a restaurant in a bigger market like that leaving only the dregs to open/run the takeaways.
In a smaller town maybe a restaurant would fail so takeaway makes more sense and they have to work harder to keep business up.

sprazcrumbler
Can't eat Chinese takeaways since returning from China. It's just all so similar and so boring compared to actual Chinese food.
It's always just some sweet and savoury sauce with "stir fry vegetables" like in the bags from tesco + a bit of meat.
Where is the mapo tofu? Where's the "meat returned to the pot" ? Where is that egg and tomato dish you get all over the place in China?
You're right that it is disappointing.

L7Alien4
The Brits are missing out on Mexican.

Bravo_November
They exist, but just aren’t as common - I reckon I propped up my favourite business by myself during COVID by ordering so many burritos.
IMO Mexican restaurants are to the USA as Indian Restaurants are to the UK (considering historical ties and immigration)

Can guarantee most of these people's idea of "a Chinese" is salt and pepper chips with chicken balls.
