Living in China can be a fantasy for some, and a nightmare for others. In my case, it was the first option. I did not have any problems doing my daily routine there. But there were a couple of things that I had to re-arrange. One of them was my food habits. In China, there are some things that are impossible to find, from specific brands of butter to tampons. My breafast was sponsored by the high prices of imported milk, butter and coffee and with a touch of sweetness from bread. Yes, in China bread is considered a dessert so it is sweet. After a while paying too much money for breakfast, I started switching to tea. It was hard at first but then I started craving bubble tea everyday. My addiction to coffee was now an addiction for tea. I also had to re-arrange my timing for having meals. When people go out to have dinner it is at 7 not at 9. So I had to eat early so I could then join everybody else

What are some challenges you face?
Mainly mis-understandments and cultural problems. Going around China with no clue of mandarin can lead into funny situations, like not understanding a restaurant employee and that he decides for you what to eat, or other not so funny situations like loosing a train because the communication was not clear enough or getting drop by a taxi in the wrong university. However, the struggles usually lead you to become a problem solver
On the first days in China, you will almost faint when you try to order water in a restaurant that it’s indeed cold, but after a while, you learn to take things with patient and even discuss the extension of your VISA with somebody that is clearly not understanding your mixture of english and mandarin
Either way, being in a different culture will be hard for the first months. And then, it will still be tough but you will learn to see things in another light and even incorporate some of Chinese habits in your daily life

How do Chinese treat foregneirs?
Depending on the city you live, you will find fascinating locals who won’t hesitate in asking you to pose with their grandmother for a picture or locals who will mind their business, treating you like any other person. Regardless, I feel like Chinese people tend to be very helpful. I would not say that they are the sweetest people I have ever meet, but they usually aid people in trouble. They are also very sincere and if you need to know something, they won’t put it nicely, they will say things like they are
My experience with locals and friends has been great overall. Some people are very shy, so you might consider them unfriendly at first, but then find out their true nature. And another important treat of Chinese people is that they tend to be extremely generous, with food, money, time and whatever you need. Having a Chinese friend is having a treasure, for sure.
中国人如何对待外国人？
根据你居住的城市，你会发现一些迷人的当地人会毫不犹豫地邀请你与他们的祖母合影，或者当地人会乐意在你自己的事情上帮助你，会像对待当地其他人一样对待你。无论如何，我觉得中国人往往非常乐于助人。我不会说他们是我见过的最可爱的人，但他们通常会帮助有困难的人。他们也很真诚，如果你需要知道什么，他们可能不会说得很好，但他们会尽量说给你听。

Coming from a small town and with very little information about the country, I embarked in the adventure of living in China for 6 months (8 years later I am still here).
One of the biggest challenges was to adapt to the amount of people. I went from a 16.000 people town on the coast to a megapolis like Shanghai with more than 24 million people. The amount of people everywhere was really stressing me out. Specially since the culture difference between Europe and China is huge.
The other biggest challenge was to adapt to the culture difference. You are raised following certain standards, behaviors, thinking ways, common sense, … and you arrive to a place where some things are really the other way. I am not talking about the spitting or the shouting. It’s about other details. People jumping the queue, staying in the middle of the train or elevator door trying to get in not allowing you to go out in the first place, eating with the mouth open (other Asian countries have the same habit), … Again, some stressful things
我来自一个小镇，在之前对这个国家的了解很少，这种情况下我开始了在中国生活六个月的冒险之旅（8年后我仍然在这里）。

I have to admit the food was another challenge. I was a picky eater. Chinese food is not the same one can eat in Chinese restaurants abroad. My job required me to go to very small towns and stay long times of period. The food was not the kind I was used to. In fact it was the kind of food I would normally not eat. If I wanted to stay healthy and alive I had to adapt and eat whatever I had. And like this I learned to try new foods and eat everything at least once. And boy I discovered Chinese dishes are amazing. They have sooo many different things to try
I leave the language for last. The language is not difficult to learn if you invest enough hours and efforts and have the will to learn it. And nowadays even if you don’t know to speak even the basics, you have phone apps to translate text and voices. In a megapolis like Shanghai m any youngsters speak English, but in the middle of nowhere they don’t. Communicating is a challenge. But life can be done without speaking a word of Chinese.

I leave the language for last. The language is not difficult to learn if you invest enough hours and efforts and have the will to learn it. And nowadays even if you don’t know to speak even the basics, you have phone apps to translate text and voices. In a megapolis like Shanghai m any youngsters speak English, but in the middle of nowhere they don’t. Communicating is a challenge. But life can be done without speaking a word of Chinese.

Now the foreigner treatment. Chinese people will treat foreigners kindly and friendly. I have never met a Chinese person that was rude to me because I am a foreigner. Never in 8 years. But. It also depends on how you treat them. I have met many Chinese that complain about foreigners being arrogant, criticizing China right left and center, and so on… On my experience, these are usually expats. These usually come here with big salaries, amazing working conditions, with good houses and so on. Are all foreigners like this? No. And they know it. That’s why first they will treat you with kind.

Being said all this, I have to say that life is amazing in China. It’s really hard to get bored here. There are so many places to visit, so many food to try, so much cultural history. The politics are not the way they display in international news. China is ruled by the communist party, but the country is far from being ruled in a communist way. It’s more capitalist than the US. Before coming here I read news and asked people about China, and everything was horrible and bad. Once I came here, my mind changed because I found something that was not like that. The only annoying thing is the internet blockage. One needs to use a VPN, and since the government is kind of hunting them down (a couple of weeks a year), they are not %100 reliable. And there is a cost attached to it. Not every western websites are blocked. Only (mainly) some media like Google, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, youtube and similar ones. China has weibo for youtube, wechat for whatsapp and facebook (which is much better by the way), tiktok, Baidoo for Google (Bing or Yahoo also work) and so on.

To summarize a bit the experience, I’d say not to believe everything they say in the media about China. Specially if you live in the US. Before having an idea about China, go there and see it. But you will need an open mind to understand it is very different from the place you come from. China is not good or bad. China is different, and has to be accepted as it is.

Like any other country, living in China can be great and it can be terrible. Every place has its good aspects and its bad ones.
Some of the biggest challenges are the results of over population. Traffic is, at least in the first-tier cities, horrendous. There are simply too many cars on poorly designed roads. During peak hours, it can take two and a half hours to travel 30 km. Public transportation can be severely overcrowded.
People drive poorly. Traffic rules are routinely ignored. People park on sidewalks, blocking intersections or park even in the lane of traffic. Even pedestrians seldom obey crossing indicators when crossing the streets.
But you get used to it.
和任何其他国家一样，生活在中国可以很美好，也可以很糟糕。每个地方都有好的方面，也有不好的方面。

On an individual basis, people are extraordinarily nice, kind and polite. As a group and on an institutional basis, racism and xenophobia are the norm. for example, if an argument breaks out that leads to a physical altercation between two Chinese people, nobody pays much attention to it. The two finish their fight and both go home. If the fight involves a foreigner, people start getting involved and even if not the initial aggressor, they demand the foreigner be deported. And they often are.

They will try to invent stories why and often they will come right out and tell you that their bank policy is not to approve credit cards for foreigners.
You don’t get used to it. You learn how to fight it.

I have lived and worked in China for 7 years. My experience is when I treat people with kindness and respect, I get that in return. All the people I encounter daily greet me warmly, my local market knows me and go out of the way to help, the guards at my building likewise help. The dry cleaners around the corner knows me and will rush if I ask. My local coffee bars know my order.
If you respond to locals as “the other” rather then a part of your community, you'll have a rough go

Really really good is the short answer.
Key to that is doing things to make yourself at home here - learning the language and enjoying the food are helpful. Being adventurous and exploring the country via high speed train and airplanes make it even better. Being friendly and talking to everyone helps most of all. Infrastructure is fantastic, food is great, things are generally quite reasonably priced.
I’ve generally found people are very friendly once they know they can talk to me in Mandarin - the fact that I’ve seen so much of China and know a fair bit about their food, different places and culture helps create a bond.

Chinese people are inherently good-natured and welcoming to foreigners. Then you’ll have the occasional idiot who’ll start talking politics (of the kind that involves China) in some way and piss everyone off. It’s important to understand that by and large, people here don’t engage in debates about government, politics in general and HK/Taiwan in particular.
I still maintain that Shanghai can be cheaper to live in than most cities - obviously depending on your lifestyle choices. Other cities more so…
So to sum up, great food, lots of culture, friendly people, possible to live within your means and have a good time on a budget - just don’t discuss politics (you can say “Trump is an idiot / a genius” and nobody will mind, I mean don’t discuss their politics)

In China, you are mostly surrounded by Han Chinese, which makes you stand out and feel very special even in everyday life.
Don’t be afraid, the Chinese are not xenophobes – on the contrary, they are very friendly and curious.
You might feel awkward at first, when people ask you for a picture in the middle of the street or stare at you, or come to touch your hair, etc.
The best way to handle this is to accept this attention and live the life of a foreign superstar. Isn’t it fun after all?
