Tens of thousands of asylum seekers forced to live in hotels in the UK while their claims are being processed will have their allowance cut to just £1.25 a day, the government has said.

Support payments for those in hotel accommodation will be cut from £9.58 a week to £8.86 a week in the new year, in a decision refugee charities have called “unfathomable”.

The change was disclosed in a form of legislation called a statutory instrument, which was quietly released by the Home Office last week.

There has been a growing backlash among Conservative backbenchers over the £8m a day cost to the taxpayer to house people seeking asylum.

Ministers promised to end the use of hotels in May 2021 but were struggling to set up the Rwanda deportation plan that they hoped would deter small boats from crossing the Channel.

Enver Solomon, the chief executive of the Refugee Council, said the change in the rules would plunge more people seeking asylum into poverty and destitution.

“They are constantly struggling to afford even basic essentials, such as basic toiletries and paying for travel to attend Home Office appointments, at a time when the cost of living is rising. This has a real impact on the mental health and wellbeing of men, women and children who are already coping with trauma and anxiety,” he said.

“With thousands of people waiting for a decision on their asylum claim, unable to work and forced to rely on the Home Office for everything, the payments should reflect actual need and be increased to a level that makes dignified living possible so people can support themselves and their families.”

People seeking asylum are not allowed to work, pay taxes or arrange their own accommodation while their claims are being processed.

Those living in hotels do not pay for accommodation, meals and toiletries. But costs such as travel, over-the-counter medications, mobile phone data, clothes and other essentials must be met by the weekly allowance.

About 50,000 people are being forced to stay in adapted and restrictive hotels on a tightly controlled sustenance budget while waiting for a decision.

The cut in their allowance follows a decision by the Home Office to use a new method called disaggregated CPI to calculate the change in prices of goods determined to be needed to meet essential needs.

David Neal, the independent chief inspector of borders and immigration, who has not had his contract renewed by ministers, has raised concerns that children living in hotels were missing developmental milestones lixed to poor diet, with children and babies failing to thrive.

He blamed the slow processing of asylum claims by the government as the main reason behind the use of hotels. “Speeding up decisions on asylum claims must be the medium-term obxtive of any government, providing hope to applicants with legitimate claims, and some level of certainty to the tens of thousands stuck in limbo,” Neal said.

The government has also resisted pressure from Conservative MPs to allow asylum seekers to work while waiting for their claims to be processed.

Dominic Raab, the former deputy prime minister, has said he would be “open-minded” about the proposal. The Tory MP for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner, David Simmonds, has been at the forefront of a campaign to allow asylum seekers to work and aid integration.

Asylum seekers in self-catering accommodation will receive an increase in their weekly allowance from £47.39 a week to £49.18. Pregnant women and families with children aged three and under will also receive an increase.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “The level of the allowance given to individuals is reviewed each year to ensure it covers essential living needs. This year weekly allowances have increased for many, including pregnant women and young children.

“We continue to meet our legal obligations by providing support and accommodation for asylum seekers who would otherwise be destitute. “

We could easily save money and make sure these people are fed three meals a day by housing them in a secure facility while they wait to be processed. This will also ensure that the economic migrants among them are unable to just walk away and slip through the net to live and earn here illegally. It would also dissuade most from coming if they know that arriving here does not necessarily mean they will be granted the right to stay. Dissuading them from coming also means less deaths in the channel, and less money in the pockets of organized criminal gangs who make an absolute fortune in people smuggling. As well as protecting locals who are having literally thousands of these total strangers who have not been vetted being dumped in their local community.

Just fix the fucking immigration and asylum system already.
You do realise, although it would be cheaper and more efficient, why they aren't doing it don't you?

If they earned a salary you could charge them for their stay and recoup their costs? Also, you can tax them?

Sounds miserable for all concerned - the asylum seekers, the hotel owners being asked to house them and the communities getting polarized by their presence.
Could we hurry up and just reform the system and process the backlog already? Grant the legitimate asylum seekers the right to remain and work and find their own way in our economy and deny and repatriate the failed asylum applicants. Deal with the actual casework rather than putting more plasters on top of plasters.

I’m sure the hotel owners being paid above market rate per night, with 0 vacancy to factor in, on long term fixed contracts, are just bawling their eyes out at this deal lol

The point is that, even though you or I would judge a great number of them to be illegitimate asylum seekers, that they are liars or exploiters, our international conventions nevertheless guarantee a successful application to basically all of them. There is an enormous backlog not because we are being lazy to process them, but simply that it is beyond untenable to follow our international laws in this instance: as the former home secretary said, right now, in the current state of the world, up to 800 million people may qualify for asylum and successfully receive it under our provisions. This. Is. Not. Acceptable

Oh that's great, I get sweet fuck all. The government takes money from me, the council takes money from me. Everyone takes my money to pay for this fucking bullshit and I cant even heat my house at winter, or afford to do anything remotely pleasurable whatsoever. Just wake, work, eat and sleep so others can live off my back while I am barely afloat.

The hypocrisy of all the bleeding hearts crying out for immigrants, meanwhile they probably walk past a homeless person without making eye contact whenever they visit town. We're giving asylum seekers free warmth, food, and a roof over their heads so the big scary human rights committee doesn't look at us funny, while people born and bred here under extremely harsh circumstances with a birth certificate and national insurance number are living cold, hungry, and unloved on every street corner and under every bridge, doorway, and shelter up and down the UK.

£1.25 a day? They should be on rice and beans and be getting fuck all until they are at least granted asylum. Turn the boats around its literally that simple. Drop them back off in france where they came from. If the french want too pipe up then lets fucking have it. Country has lost its fucking backbone

It's actually so funny how manipulative the tories are they are quite clever aren't they? Finding the perfect scapegoat to cover up the sheer amount of corruption and missuse of government funding,by the looks of this comment section they have succeeded.

We could just invest more in processing asylum claims, but the government doesn't want that. They want you to get angry at asylum seekers so they can say "you need to vote for us because we can fix it" so they stay in power, despite having been in power for 13 years.
Just fixing problems doesn't get votes. Causing a problem and pretending to fix it by promising to fly a couple hundred people to Rwanda does get votes

Been paying takes for over 2 decades and gotten my head around it. Its supposed to do good for my country and its people and i am actually happy hearing stories of how the govt in one way or other has come through for my country people and i like to think my taxes helped.
However, it boils my blood to think that that our resources are being used to prop up freeloaders whilst the needy in my country go without food or shelter.
It sickens me.

This definitely screams infrastructure issues but overall though, they're illegal immigrants who presumably are awaiting some kind of visa, a hotel isn't the answer, most countries operate a safe and well, humane, infrastructure for people like this - it just seems the UK lacks that structure.
Throwing them into a new culture with new social conventions doesn't seem like the answer. Yes, there is a thin line between a detention centre and prison but you'd think the UK (maybe not necessarily under this government) to be able to handle that - even if it's just a gated community where there are educational lessons to help them pass some kind of exam, like we do with ordinary people seeking citizenship.

I used to live in Kensington near Earl's Court in a shared flat with some uni mates. Expensive area, yet a lot of the expensive hotels were full of asulym seekers. Often saw their kids playing on the steps or street all day. This situation isn't the asulym seekers fault, it's the government's for slashing budgets and creating a backlog.
The government is utilising its resources so poorly. £8 million a day on hotels, £240 million on the Rwanda scheme, fancy barges etc. Surely the gov should have designed an efficient system for processing applications with all the money and time they have had to address the problem? It's almost as if they are deliberately sabotaging any progress to have a horse to flog in front of the electorate.
The solution isn't to stop everyone; too many are buying into the Tories stoking of the culture war narrative. The sensible solution is to process applications and then remove those who are unsuccessful, like every other European country does. If you actually believe that genuine asulym seekers should be removed alongside economic migrants you have questionable morals.
