The problem with Russia today compare to USSR is that its population is so small. Russia itself isn't as big as many people think because most parts of Russia are very cold and uninhabitable.

The best contender is the European unx with a total economy of the same size (slightly larger than the US before brexit, and slightly smaller now) and 70 % of the GDP per capita. Some smaller countries in Western Europe has a larger GDP per capita than the US.
