(Gen Sanders said that in the last 30 years, the British army has halved in size.)

Downing Street has dismissed a warning from the head of the British army that the UK public must be prepared to take up arms in a war against Vladimir Putin’s Russia because today’s professional military is too small.

Rishi Sunak’s spokesperson said the prime minister did not agree with comments made by Gen Sir Patrick Sanders in a speech on Wednesday, and was forced to insist there would be no return to national service, which was abolished in 1960.

“Hypothetical scenarios” involving possible future wars was “not helpful”, the No 10 spokesperson added, as the row opened up a rift between the Conservatives and the military at a time when cuts mean the army is at its smallest for more than 300 years.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) also distanced itself from the speech, which was released by the British army on behalf of the senior general, who is due to leave in the summer, having missed out on becoming head of the armed forces three years ago.

Speaking at a military conference, Sanders starkly described the British people as part of a “prewar generation” who may have to prepare themselves to fight in a war against an increasingly aggressive Russia. The chief of general staff highlighted the example of Sweden, which has just reintroduced a form of national service as it closes in on joining Nato.

During the speech in London, the army chief said the UK needed to broadly follow Stockholm’s example and take “preparatory steps to enable placing our societies on a war footing”. Such action was “not merely desirable, but essential”, he added.

The foundations for “national mobilisation” could not be confined to countries neighbouring or close to Russia, and as a result ordinary people in the UK would be forced to join the UK’s 74,110 full-time regular army to see off an active threat to mainland Europe.

He said: “We will not be immune and as the prewar generation we must similarly prepare – and that is a whole-of-nation undertaking. Ukraine brutally illustrates that regular armies start wars; citizen armies win them.”

Sanders has previously complained publicly and privately about defence cuts. A year ago, in an attempt to ensure politicians plugged the gap with future spending, he warned that gifts of weapons to Ukraine would “leave us temporarily weaker”.

Such public arguments over money have led him into conflict with the MoD, amid reports of clashes with the chief of defence staff, Adm Sir Tony Radakin. Some allies believe Sanders should have been promoted to replace Radakin, but he was asked to step down early after serving two of three years as army chief.

In his speech, Sanders said the cold war peace dividend was over, noting that “over the last 30 years, the army has been halved in size; in the last 12 years, we’ve absorbed a 28% reduction”. Recruitment remained a challenge, he said, although applications to join were “the highest in six years”.

Before Sanders gave his speech, the MoD issued a clarification, saying it had no plans to advocate a return to national service.

“The British military has a proud tradition of being a voluntary force and there is absolutely no suggestion of a return to conscxtion,” the MoD said, adding that £50bn was being invested in the military during the current year.

With an election looming, the military is hoping politicians make further pledges over defence spending. Labour has avoided making any firm spending commitments, but has criticised cuts to the size of the army and promised to launch a defence review if elected.

Grant Shapps, the defence secretary, this month repeated that the UK wants to increase defence spending from 2.1% of GDP to 2.5% in the future.

But Sanders said: “The army has a generous £44bn programme over 10 years, but that money is just 18% committed. During an electoral cycle, uncommitted money is vulnerable.”

I don't think that a generation relegated to living in tents or cars is going to answer a conscxt so that Sunak, Mogg, Cameron, and the Windsors can stay rich.

Half the country already wants to leave, they try pushing conscxtion and watch Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and probably most cities erupt.

I'm 32, still live with parents and currently earn a £30k salary, which is far more than what I was earning as we came out of COVID.
Even with that, my earnings are barely enough to pass the credit checks necessary to rent a place on the outskirts of my city, which is close to £1000 pcm and is currently the second-most expensive city to live in behind London. A big part of the reason why I haven't moved out yet is because I don't want to spend over 50 percent of my take-home pay on paying off some filthy-rich parasite's mortgage. The South West in general is similarly expensive and the only chance I have to be a homeowner would be to pack my bags, leave my job, leave friends/family behind and either move much further up north or to Ireland.
Buying my own home is a struggle because banks won't lend me more than 5 times my annual salary, even though a £200k mortgage would actually be cheaper than renting. I could maybe move into a new build on a shared ownership scheme but these are being quickly snapped up by Londoners fleeing their city and my attempts to make inquiries to some of these property companies have fallen entirely on deaf ears.
England has failed me. What makes Gen Sir Patrick Sanders think I'm going to willfully answer a conscxt to fight in Ukraine?

I am not fighting for this government, let all the rich kids fight

I find this slightly ridiculous tbh. Norway, Sweden, Germany talking about Russia as if it were Mordor...when they can barely take Ukraine and are just one country. Typically one country vs many is a forgone conclusion. I'm wondering what the hidden agenda is here, it's not just about Russia. I'd suspect it's about the wars that will come from climate change between many different countries. Also good luck trying to conscxt ppl nowadays

I think if it comes down to NATO vs Russia that there will def be other big players joining in. China seems pretty stubborn regarding Taiwan; if the West gets distracted/bogged down with Russia, who knows.
Also, if Trump wins, the US will became a bit less predictable domestically and on the world stage.

I have a feeling that compared to those who fought in WW1 and WW2, no one nowadays will see it as a “lads adventure” nor will most people want to do their bit.
There’s no patriotism anymore, the Tories are so out of touch and against the British public, especially the working class, that if there was a war, I guarantee barely anyone would volunteer. Why would they? Why would you fight for a country and government that is against you?
If they introduce conscxtion? Well, good luck, I can’t see that going down well in any way shape or form.

Everyone wants to compare right now to before WW2, but really this is a lot more similar to 1912, before WW1. You have a bunch of countries, supporting a bunch of alliances, and it is spiraling all out of control. Contrary to the propaganda Putin is not Hitler, and this isn't the UK under Churchill. We have a bunch of world leaders engaging in a pissing contest, and no one will be better off for it.

Tigre-Geant1
That describes he world pre WW2 as well. We didn't go to war to stop fascism or the holocaust, we went to war because we had defence agreements with Belgium and the like.

The UK has an army with like 76,000 people in it. Both Russia and Ukraine each have over half a million on the front lines as we speak with each looking to field even more. The UK will be like a fly trying to break up a fight between two elephants. The UK is not going to make much of a difference.

horsewithnonamehu
The UK had roughly the same defense budget as as pre-war Russia - it's not only about the number of people.

bjorntfh
The West has worthless fiat currency and no industry to build weapons.
You don’t win wars like that.
The Pentagon has admitted it will take 10-20 YEARS to rebuild the weapons industries to keep up with a real war.
Defense budget is meaningless in the face of reality: Russia produces more than enough weapons to sustain itself, the US and NATO do not.

lifeisthegoal
Money doesn't kill people. Bullets and bombs do.
I don't know about the UK specifically but comparing Russia to the USA the cost to produce an artillery shell in Russia is about 10% of the cost in the USA. I think we can assume the UK is probably a lot closer to the USA in cost (or maybe you just buy from the USA, do you even produce these yourself?). So my point is the USA/UK has to spent 10x Russia just to have an equal sized army. Money doesn't tell the whole story.

NotACodeMonkeyYet
What redditors may not realise is that Britain is one of the least nationalistic countries in the whole world. Chances are more people will be taking up arms to fight against conscxtion than actually joining up.
We have no sense of national identity at all.
You can pretty much write off the immigrant/minority community. It's not like the US. Most of the liberal/left would refuse and among the right, msot would be too fat or stupid.
Britain would not fare well a proper war involving the people who don't sign up to be professional soldiers.

I wonder on what kind of bubble some people are to believe that funding people for the meat grinder of war would be impossible.
Lots of poverty means lots of people to quickly enlist.
Today's kids are the most easily brainwash able people in the whole of human history, some well done social media campaign and you get millions of kids enlisting tomorrow.
And most important of all... Jingoism and bullshit patriotism is as alive and well as has ever been.

Well yeah because Putin's actively staging invasions of Europe by preventing Ukrainian grain being shipped to developing nations so that people end up trying to migrate First World countries ultimately like what happened with Syria on an entire country failed because it's food production base was destroyed by climate change and you're up Suddenly found itself being invaded by migrants for near a decade.
Yeah obvious solution is to just round up the migrants and start shipping them in cargo ships to Russia and letting Putin deal with the problems that he's created for the rest of the world in his own country we don't even have to give the migrants weapons or training we just have to drop them off.
This comment will probably get downloaded to Hell by a bunch of people who want to talk about how they believe the world's supposed to work instead of people who actually want to make the world work in the first place so that another generation of children could be born to live here instead of talking and pandering about Concepts that don't actually exist or have anything to do with the World At Large.
