I think Japan's main mistake was overreliance on western markets. They grew fantastically by exporting to the US and Europe, but they didn't use that wealth to try and help other countries develop. In the end they tried to invest in neighbouring Asian countries more, to help them develop into alternative markets for Japanese exports, but again too little too late.
